  4. Newcastle almost done?published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Never say never on deadline day, but once Brighton defender Dan Burn passes his medical, that could be it for incomings during Newcastle's transfer window.

That would be five players in - Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Burn - and about £91m spent.

They missed out on Sevilla's Diego Carlos, but the key thing for a side which has two Premier League clean sheets all season, is that Eddie Howe has recruited across the back four and in front of it.

Guimaraes could be the most important signing of the lot. Newcastle have needed a defensive shield for some time.

  13. Lingard set to stay at Man Utdpublished at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard looks set to stay at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old spoke to interim United boss Ralf Rangnick earlier today and was told he could leave if an acceptable offer was received.

However, it has become clear United are not willing to substantively alter their stance around Lingard leaving.

They were unwilling to let him join a top four rival in West Ham and demanded a hefty clause in any deal with Newcastle should they avoid relegation.

For more updates, analysis and reaction as we enter the final hours of deadline day go to the Man Utd page.

  14. 'A fantastic option on the left'published at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

"He has important Premier League experience and know-how at this level, so I'm really pleased we've been able to add him to the squad."

I was excited when we signed VDB but I shouldn't have been. Who of those ex team mates at Ajax who have gone to other clubs since 2019 have had genuine success? Ziyech hasn't shown us to be to amazing player he was in that team, Frenkie de Jong is talented but hasn't set the world on fire and Matthijs de Ligt isn't worth the £70m they bought him for. Each of them played great in a team but they're less than the sum of their parts. Other people have noted that VDB has failed to impress two managers in a midfield with McFred, Matic, Mata & Bruno. Maybe these coaches who have had long careers playing with a lot of different great players are on to something? They say he's a nice guy but let's face facts. You're competing against your other teammates for the spot on the team and he clearly hasn't got the guts for the fight. I've seen him play. He has one or two good touches but so do the rest of them! He's failed his own expectations which all things previously mentioned have left a lot of us wanting and he's not delivering. It isn't like it should be hard to force any of those aforementioned players out of the starting line up but time and again he hasn't done it!
