I thought England were average at best. They have been sloppy. In possession they have been too slow and it needs John Stones and Harry Maguire to step into midfield with the ball to create the space and draw the USA strikers towards them. There has been too many sidewards passes.

It is almost like England have come to the game and expected to win. The midfield has been non-existent. USA probably deserve to be ahead if I'm honest.

You do watch USA wondering where the composure is going to come from. It doesn't. It is just them saying "I am going to go" and it makes it uncomfortable for England. It has been an uncomfortable half.

The USA shaded the first half in terms of the quality of chances created, with Weston McKennie squandering their best opportunity (the biggest purple circle).

England's xG was 0.36 in the first half compared to the USA's 0.43.

England were very poor until those couple of late threats. There has been a real lack of urgency. This has been very laboured and manager Gareth Southgate has work to do in this half-time interval as England are in a serious World Cup game here and USA have been the better team.

USA have found their way into the game. They looked all at sea at the game. They weren't getting the press or dropping right either.

The game is in the balance. England can play better than this. They'll be saying that and "go out and prove it".

Hmmmmm.

The US will be far happier, albeit also feeling they should be ahead.

England need to regroup and reassess this.

Harry Kane just didn't read the first ball from Jude Bellingham - he didn't think he'd be able to put such a good ball in. The second chance was just behind Bukayo Saka.

Christian Pulisic has been few and far between for Chelsea this season, but Captain America, isn't it?

England are not on the front foot.

Another US chance.

A cross from the right is met by Christian Pulisic, but he is in a bunch of players and not renowned for his heading. The effort bobbles wide.

Gareth Southgate is sure to be very worried by this. England are getting pulled about and the US are finding the gaps too easily.

Dan: We’re looking sluggish. USA running rings around us at times. The final result will be the ultimate judge. But from where i’m sitting, we need a rethink if we’re in with a chance in this tournament.

Andy: Normal service resumed for England after the Iran game. Slow, lacking in inspiration going forward, nervy at the back. Gareth needs to try something else after half time to liven things up, perhaps Rashford for Kane.
