You have to seriously wonder why Austria offered Rangnick the international job.... His showing really since he arrived at Old Trafford has been, in truth, utterly appalling. Utd have gone not just a few steps back but many, many steps backwards since he took the helm.

    The goal stands!

Huge cheer from the home fans, but no-one can deny they haven't deserved this.

This is up there with one of Manchester United's worst performances of the season.

Leandro Trossard bundles in from close range but is it handball? Diogo Dalot's clearance hit him and VAR will take a look...

    Too easy!

Manchester United are carved open as Robert Sanchez plays a superb ball down the left to Marc Cucurella, who in turn feeds Leandro Trossard and he has space to tee up Pascal Gross inside the area to flick a shot past David de Gea.

Just the one change for Tottenham after last Sunday's win against Leicester, with Antonio Conte unsurprisingly bringing Dejan Kulusevski back into his starting XI in place of Lucas Moura.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Royal, Sessegnon, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Son, Kane.

    Good hit, Juan Mata!

The ball is half cleared and Mata connects sweetly with the volley but Robert Sanchez is too close to it.

    Brighton 2-0 Man Utd

Manchester United have a rare corner. Alex Telles swings it in, Fred picks the ball up at the far side of the box. He can't get a shot off before Diogo Dalot smashes a shot well over from 25 yards.

    Brighton 2-0 Man Utd

    Michael Emons

The emotion of it all was too much for goalscorer Marc Cucurella as the Spanish left-back was in tears as he celebrated his goal which gave Brighton a 2-0 lead and he made a heart gesture with his hands. We may well hear later on who he was dedicating that goal to.

What we do know is the Amex is rocking and very, very noisy and this is turning into another dark day in a miserable season for United.

Danny Welbeck is in space down the left but eventually Manchester United get players over to him, forcing him to pass backwards.

Brighton retain possession, though, as they look to turn the screw.

Without a win today, Manchester United will finish a miserable season with their lowest-ever Premier League points tally.

Bad to worse for Manchester United!

Marc Cucurella is in tears as he scores his first goal in English football. It is terrible defending as he is allowed to run onto a cutback and thump a shot into the roof of the net.

Brighton fully deserve this. Absolutely dominant.

Brighton are a criminally underrated side. Went a long time not being able to score, and they still need to score more, but arguably outside of the top two or three they play the best football in the Premier League.

  16. 'We want to finish high as possible'published at 18:31 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    FT: Brentford 3-0 Southampton

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank to BBC Sport: "If you win 3-0 in the Premier League, and a fully deserved 3-0 win, as a promoted club you need to be happy.

"There were a lot of good things. In the first half there were quite a few bad things. We didn't have control like we'd have wanted to, they played too easily through us. We adjusted at half-time and controlled the second half."

On avoiding relegation: "We get asked it a lot by journalists, of course as a promoted club I understand part of it is you'd like to play next year but we've always aimed as high as possible. We want to focus on the next game and finish as high as possible."

On whether Christian Eriksen is why their form has picked up: "No I don’t think so. Christian was good today but he wasn’t as good as some of the other games. We’re a pretty good team. Christian has had a big impact but we’ve got most of our best players fit now."

  17. 'When you're a team like us, the minimum is giving it everything you've got'published at 18:31 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster: "You could see the confidence was low, we were really lacking today. Last week's defeat to Burnley really took it out of us. We knew before the game that is was nigh-on impossible. We wanted to come and compete, and I think we did. We felt it probably wasn't a penalty so we feel a little bit hard done by. But credit to the lads in front of me today. They gave what they could but the confidence was lacking."

On where the Hornets have fallen short: "Consistency. Our home form has been phenomenally bad. If you want to stay in the league your home form has to be key. You just don't really know what you're going to get from us, to be perfectly honest.

"We've got too many players who are happy to put it in for an hour, 70 minutes, but then probably fall off and happily let it go in the last 20 minutes. You can't have that. When you're a team like us, the minimum is giving it everything you've got. The ability you can forego a little bit and accept that you might not have the quality of some players, but you've got to put the effort in."

On Roy Hodgson: "Roy's been fantastic. He came in and got a group of lads who were a bunch of misfits, to be perfectly honest, and got us playing a style where we know we're all on the same page at least. We know that we can be competitive when we're doing it properly but in some games we've had some stupid mistakes and then heads drop. Confidence is a massive thing in sport and within our team it's a huge problem.

"It's been a really tough season for us all. Hopefully in the Championship next season we can do what we did last season and give the fans something to smile about, and hopefully bounce back at the first time of asking."

  18. 'We've proved we can be ruthless'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    FT: Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard to Sky Sports: "I was pleased with a lot of things; the points are the most important thing. We've shown we can be strong away from home and we were better in every department today, with all due respect. When our moments came, we showed our quality, we were ruthless in front of goal. The front three won us the game, but everyone stood up today.

"You saw it last week with [Danny] Ings and [Ollie] Watkins; they got us the goals and looked dangerous as a pair. A lot of people on the outside don't believe in [their partnership], I certainly do. We gave Emi Buendia a chance and I thought he was fantastic, really creative."

  19. We'll go through the process and improve'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    FT: Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

    Burnley

Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson to Sky Sports: "First half we got punished for some errors, which you do at this level. We had good moments and quite a bit of the ball, but we couldn't finish them off. Then you are two down and second half you lose one early and it knocks the wind out of you.

"When you lose a game, you can't shake that feeling straight away, you've got to go through the process of looking at what wr did well, what we can improve on and the plan going forward."

  20. 'We didn't make the most of our chances'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    FT: Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

    Burnley

Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson to BBC Match of the Day: "We will watch it back and look at what we could have done better. We had good moments, probably didn't make the most of them and we've been punished for errors. That happens at this level, but we'd have taken 10 points from five games if offered beforehand. It is about regrouping and going from there.

"The reaction [to going behind] was really good. We looked after the ball well, but that little bit of quality was lacking. Sometimes you need things to go for you; we had as many moments as Villa but didn't taker them. We are carrying some niggles; that doesn't help but these things happen. We've got a week until Tottenham, we've got to be ready."
