  1. 'We know what we can achieve'published at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Uruguay v South Korea (13:00 GMT)

Uruguay manager Diego Alonso has only been in his post since he replaced the long-serving Oscar Tabarez in December but guided the team to qualification with four wins from his first four matches in charge.

The 47-year-old was eager not to get ahead of himself when previewing their Group H opener.

“A good tournament is to win the first game. What comes after is not something I am thinking about,” Alonso added.

“We are really excited, we know what we can achieve, but what is important is this game.

"We know what we can reach and we cannot think of another thing except the next game because otherwise we will make mistakes.”

  2. Another goal for Son?published at 12:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Uruguay v South Korea (13:00 GMT)

Son Heung-min, South Korea’s joint-top World Cup goalscorer of all time (three goals), scored twice at the 2018 World Cup and once in 2014; he could become only the second player to score in three separate editions of the tournament for the nation, after Park Ji-sung, who netted once in each of 2002, 2006 and 2010.

We caught up with three South Korean friends who are here to watch a few nations in Qatar.

They are here for 12 days and have tickets for all three South Korea group-stage matches, as well as seeing Portugal, the USA and Japan.

The man on the left was very confident of a 2-0 win today. Their favourite player? Tottenham's Son Heung-min.

And then we found more Son Heung-min fans. A family had travelled across from South Korea all bearing his name on the back of their shirts.

"Will he score today?" I asked.

    "Yes, of course!"

  4. Can South Korea create more World Cup headlines?published at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Uruguay v South Korea (13:00 GMT)

South Korea are playing at their 10th successive World Cup, with their best performance coming in 2002 when then finished fourth in the tournament they co-hosted with Japan.

They went out in the group phase in Russia four years ago, but did still create one memorable moment with a 2-0 win over reigning holders Germany - a result that eliminated the Germans.

Two Uruguay fans were holding up this banner to the cameras as we walked around the stadium earlier.

I asked the man on the right what it meant. He said it was the final line in their national anthem. It translates to "We will fulfill".

"It means we go, we have to fulfill," he tells me, clenching his fists.

We finally found some Luis Suarez shirts too.

I asked one man if he liked the partnership between Suarez and Darwin Nunez.

"Oh yessss. Nunez and Suarez are very good, very good. Liverpool!"

Hosts Uruguay won the first ever World Cup in 1930, beating Argentina 4-2 in the final

Uruguay have won this tournament twice before - in 1930 and 1950.

In recent competitions, they reached the semi-finals in 2010 after beating Ghana on penalties in the quarter-final, moments after striker Luis Suarez had denied the African side a certain goal with a clear handball on the line, which he was sent off for.

Four years later, Suarez scored twice as Uruguay beat England 2-1 but then in their next match Suarez bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, with Suarez later getting a four-month ban.

The team then lost in the last 16 to Colombia. Last time out in Russia Uruguay reached the quarter-finals, losing 2-0 to eventual winners France.

  10. Veteran Godin aims to silence criticspublished at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Uruguay v South Korea (13:00 GMT)

Uruguay captain Diego Godin joined his manager at the press conference and he starts today, despite a difficult 2022.

The ex-Atletico Madrid centre-back signed for Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro in January but left in the summer to join Velez Sarsfield.

A knee injury has restricted his game time during the past 12 months and yet the 159-cap 36-year-old veteran hit back at his critics.

Godin said: “These are just opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I must focus on what I can do and that is to be fit and help my team-mates.

“I was able to recover, to train and to compete as usual. You will see today’s Godin. You won’t see the Godin of 20 years ago who was different, but I will try to be useful and to give my utmost.

“I will give everything on the pitch and not just during the matches but in training. I am ready.”

We left early to get to the Education City Stadium as it's a hot day and we didn't fancy rushing around.

Plenty of Uruguay fans did the same to soak up the pre-match atmosphere. There were quite a few shirts with Edinson Cavani’s name on the back.

We also met a Canadian earlier who is here for six days. He has already been to a few games and was asking us for a ticket for the Qatar v Senegal match tomorrow.

    Son Heung-minImage source, Getty Images

South Korea head coach Paulo Bento confirmed Tottenham forward Son Heung-min will play with the black protective mask he has been wearing in training since he sustained a fracture around his left eye in a Champions League match against Marseille on 1 November.

Son underwent surgery days later to fix the issue and despite not appearing at his country’s pre-match press conference in Al Rayyan, he will be involved in the Group H opener at Education City Stadium.

“Sonny can play. Yes he will be able to play,” Bento told a press conference on Wednesday.

“I think the fact he would be wearing a mask is not an inconvenience for him. It is rather natural for him. We have stuck to the plan since we arrived here and also the way we integrated him into our group shows it has been natural.

“Our hope is he will feel comfortable to the greatest extent possible and we’ll use the best strategy so he will feel at ease during the game.”
