Probably not a good idea to give the ball away and allow Kylian Mbappe to run at you. Kyle Walker responds well and halts the PSG forward.

The only good thing about conceding (an admittedly fantastic) goal so early on is that hopefully it'll force England to quicken things up and increase the threat, because we've looked ponderous and nervous so far. France are definitely playing like the top side here.

    England 0-1 France

France's Antoine Griezmann, in his new deeper role for Les Bleus, is possibly the player who is having the biggest impact on the pattern of the match.

Griezmann has had more touches than another French player (19) and not misplaced any of his 12 passes.

He has already had a running battle with England's Jude Bellingham - one of the potential keys to this match.

Griezmann has competed in the most duels (six) and won the most duels (four).

Who is in the VAR team today? Some shocking decisions already.

It was schoolboy stuff there, an absolute bundle on the ball and anybody putting something on the line just to get in the way for France.

    Just needs a touch!

Phil Foden's corner is allowed to drop in the crowd of players on the edge of the six yard box, sparking a flurry of desperate kicks.

The decisive act comes from a man in blue, who takes the ball away and boots it clear.

England are in the ascendancy, though. Momentum is with them. Need to ruthless now.

    Save!

England are pushing! Harry Kane gets hold of the ball 25 yards from goal and unleashes a rising shot that Hugo Lloris has to dive to push aside.

France have been content to let England have a lot of the ball since scoring.

England have reacted really well to going behind by giving the France defence some anxious moments, Kylian Mbappe has been a fleeting presence but what quality he has. He is razor sharp and such a threat.

Fahad: Very negative start by England. Backwards and side way passing will do no good against this France side

Kyle: England players are so scared of Mbappe and forgot to mark all the other France players.

Jay: Southgate coming unstuck against the first decent opposition in a tournament, just like 2018 and 2020.

Leo: France play better one-touch football than England, this is what we lack, we need to be more aggressive.

I think England have a right to be a bit aggrieved here. Not a lot going their way.

The only suggestion I can come up with is that it wasn't in the penalty area but Kane fell in the area, it looked like it, and there's certainly contact in and around the area.

Play on. Oof. That's a big call. Looked a foul to me.

There's contact, there's a throw of the leg. That's a penalty. It's soft, he doesn't win the ball and he comes from behind.

The contact was bang on the edge of the right side of the box. It's getting checked. It was very clumsy.

Surely a penalty! Not according to the ref on the pitch!

Harry Kane is taken down by a loose leg from Dayot Upamecano.

Kane is certain. What will VAR say?

  17. France probing on the rightpublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England 0-1 France

All the pre-match talk was about France's attacking threat on the left flank through Kylian Mbappe.

But, in the opening 20 minutes or so, Didier Deschamps' side have been probing down the right side more.

Why is no one talking about the foul in the buildup to the France goal?

    Ben

We just gonna gloss over the foul on Saka then ?

    Andy

Surely a foul on Saka there. Awful refereeing.

    Scramble!

England have responded really well to going behind. Harry Kane rolls his marker in the box and draws a fine save from Spurs club-mate Hugo Lloris.

Jordan Henderson chips the loose ball to the back post, where France do well to win the ball and hack away.
