France have only lost one of their last eight meetings with England across all competitions (W5 D2), a 2-0 defeat in a friendly in November 2015.

This is the two nations’ first encounter since June 2017, when Les Bleus won a friendly 3-2.

Earlier, Cedric Brule spoke to BBC News from Brittany, France, saying he'd had split his loyalties between tonight's two teams during the tournament so far.

Although he's French, Cedric said he'd been supporting both sides throughout the World Cup because he teaches English.

    Tonight, though, he's "100% French".

He predicted a tight match in which Les Bleus would pip the Three Lions, 3-2.

"It looks like a final," he said, commenting on the magnitude of the fixture.

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

This will be the third World Cup meeting between England and France, with the Three Lions winning both of the previous two, a 2-0 victory in 1966 and 3-1 in 1982, both in the group stage.

The latter of those two saw one of the fastest goals in World Cup history, with Bryan Robson scoring after just 27 seconds. He would score again later, with Paul Mariner making sure of the victory.

From the games room of the luxurious Al Messila Resort in Doha, you can hear the laughter from far away.

There are eight France players sat round a large rectangular table, Uno cards in their hands approaching the end of a game - and it is tense. Youssouf Fofana and Aurelien Tchouameni look like they could win but Dayot Upamecano is in a strong position too. One card and everything can change.

This was the scene two days before the World Cup quarter-final against England, yet it is an evening like any other in the France camp.

Whether it is Uno, poker, piano, pool or PlayStation, the players enjoy their downtime. This squad is a happy one, and you don't feel any nerves before facing their old rivals.

France and England's men's teams have never met in the knockout stages of a major tournament. The last time they played each other in the World Cup was in 1982 in the group stage in Spain, when England won 3-1 and Bryan Robson scored after 27 seconds.

The French will want England to commit players to Kylian Mbappe, to commit more players on that side and lose a bit of their focus because they have to watch him so much. He can do something which can free Griezmann, Giroud or Dembele and the French will be hoping for that to happen.

  16. 'He's a leader... an example'published at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on England captain and Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane: "I only have positive things to say. He's a very important player for the club and indeed for the England team as well.

"He's a real leader, an example for his team-mates and he is a top player. He's been decisive for his club and very often he makes the difference.

"Harry is known all over the world so I can't really add much. But he'll be an opponent. We'll both be representing our countries so our focus will be on that.

"You know better than me that Harry has the ability to shoot anywhere. He's one of the best probably at this aspect of the game.

"Obviously for Harry or the other English players, they will be analysing their penalties. Then, it is all about feeling, all about instinct that you get during the match.

"Before you get to a penalty shootout, it is the time to make the difference on the pitch. We'll see. Anything can become decisive in what will be a big game.

"We have to be ready for every scenario."

  20. 'Not an easy role to have'published at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

Gareth Southgate on goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who will reach 50 England caps on Saturday: "What is the stand-out thing is that he's handled being the England number one really well.

"It's not an easy role to have, there's a lot of focus on it, a lot of spotlight. There have been credible alternatives at certain times that put that position under pressure but he's maintained a really high level of performance for us right through that period.

"It's a fantastic individual achievement," he added. "There's still only a low number of players that get to 50 caps and to do that you've got to have a decent period of time as an England international.

"For them it's important and that experience for us, you do go through different experiences that England nights and tournaments bring."
