Currently heading to a ball tonight of all nights! A mate says he’s bringing a TV for the match but I’ll hold him to that. I’ll be in touch if we end up watching it. If not it’ll be a complete blackout until I catch up at home.

  7. How have travelling fans found Qatar tournament?published at 18:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

At about 4.30am every day in Doha, the Adhan echoes around the city.

After hearing the Islamic call to prayer, worshippers make their way to their local mosque for Fajr (dawn) prayers.

At the same time, World Cup visitors are climbing back into their beds having left the Fifa fan festival - where matches are shown on big screens, then concerts staged - when it closes at 2am.

Qatar has a population of fewer than three million people and more than 2,000 mosques, and a contrast in culture has been brought to the country for the first major international football tournament to be held in a Muslim state in the Middle East.

"It feels so special seeing the excitement and smiles of the fans," fan festival director Mead Al Emadi told BBC Sport. "We have welcomed people from all backgrounds and cultures to celebrate the best of football here.

"Seeing how much people are enjoying themselves is the intangible legacy of the World Cup. As a Qatari woman who loves her football, working on this project for the past 10 years, then delivering it, is something that has been beyond my wildest dreams."

Fans fill a bar in central Paris

In Le Galant in central Paris, even the pizzas come adorned with a French flag tonight.

Here, as in bars and cafes across France, a nervous energy is building.

Le Galant is expecting 300 people to watch the game from its terrace, where big screens are already showing the pre-match build-up.

There’s quiet confidence in a French win here, but no one says it’ll be easy.

There’s respect for the England side too, and particularly for strikers like Harry Kane. Many are expecting a battle.

There’s a special kind of atmosphere around this match; an added sense of history – a duel between footballing nations, tied by centuries of rivalry, both on and off the pitch.

“It’s the final before the final,” one fan said.

  10. 'We need belief and to go to the depths'published at 18:16 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV Sport about naming an unchanged team: "[The decision] is never simple, we have got strength in depth and you're always thinking about the opposition as well. But we've been on a good path and need to stay on that track.

"I think our midfield has been really important and you can lose a player in there with some back three systems. We feel we have got to get pressure on France and cut the supply by getting another player further up the pitch."

On the biggest qualities England need to show tonight: "It is belief and we need men on the pitch. In these big nights you need to stand up, you have go to the depths to be able to get a result.

"We're playing well and got confidence, this will be a huge test of that. But it feels great to be going into this match feeling like we do.

"We hope we can give everyone at home another evening to remember."

  11. 'The same way we prepare for every team'published at 18:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

England boss Gareth Southgate on the threat posed by Kylian Mbappe: "It's the same way that we prepare for every team. You're looking at all the patterns of how they play, the individuals within the team. Are there specifics that need to be highlighted?

"As much as we might highlight Mbappe, we've got to pay due attention to Olivier Giroud and how he gets his goals, and Antoine Griezmann has played over 70 consecutive games for France. There's a clue there in how important he is to them, I think he's a phenomenal player.

"So if we don't go into the detail and the specifics for those particular players in a game at this level then you're not doing your due diligence really."

  12. 'Mbappe ignoring all the talk'published at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

France forward Kylian Mbappe is "ignoring the talk about him" before Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against England, says Hugo Lloris.

Mbappe, 23, is the leading scorer in the tournament with five goals.

A lot of the pre-match talk from ex-players has centred around how England and right-back Kyle Walker will deal with the threat posed by Mbappe.

But Lloris stressed: "He is focused on his objectives and seems very happy, as he has since the tournament began."

"He is preparing very well and he is ignoring the talk about him."

France are unbeaten in Mbappe's 13 starts at major tournaments - winning all nine at the World Cup - and he has been directly involved in 12 goals in those fixtures, with the Paris St-Germain forward either scoring or assisting France's past seven World Cup goals.

  13. 'Fine margins matter when you are marking Mbappe'published at 18:11 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    Rio FerdinandImage source, BBC Sport

Stop Kylian Mbappe and you stop France - he is the only reason I fear them.

The good news for England is that Kyle Walker is definitely fast enough to deal with Mbappe - he is probably the only defender on the planet who would be happy to take him on in a race, one versus one.

But this battle is not just going to be about raw pace alone. Mbappe's intelligence makes Walker's task on Saturday much harder than that.

To get through it, Walker is going to need some help out there, so the team's approach and the focus of the players around him will be crucial too.

It is going to be fascinating to watch, and success or failure for England could come down to the finest of margins - Mbappe knows one tiny lapse is all it takes, and he will be away.

Up top tonight we have two number nines each with 52 goals to their name. One of those is his country's leading goalscorer of all time*, the other is two shy of following suit.

In scoring France's opening goal against Poland in the last 16, Olivier Giroud moved past Thierry Henry's France goal tally.

Harry Kane has one less goal to his name than Wayne Rooney for the Three Lions. He has time on his side, though. It is just a matter of when not if for the Spurs striker.

Tonight we suit most of us just fine.

Raheem Sterling missed England's last-16 win over Senegal following a break-in at his family home in Surrey.

The Chelsea forward, 28, flew back from Qatar on Sunday but has now rejoined the squad in Al Wakrah and took part in training on Friday. He's on the bench tonight.

"I haven't had chance to sit with him yet," said Southgate.

"We've spoken on the phone and I think he's in a better place in that he feels he can come back in and has had the time he needs to help his family. Whether he's going to have done enough to be involved in the game is a different matter.

"He's had two long flights and missed a lot of training with the team - we're going into the level of game where you need to be fully on it.

"It's great that we've got the option of having him back with us, that he's back with the group, but in terms of involvement for this game, that's a bit more complicated."
