  1. 'Right team choice for Liverpool'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 17 May 2022

    Adam Lallana
Former Liverpool and Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

This team is the right team to win the game tonight. It gives Liverpool the best possible chance with freshness. Lots of legs in midfield.

I fancy them tonight. When you’ve got a squad as big as Jurgen has you can make give changes and still be favourites. They’ve got the big guns on the bench if needed. I think the momemtum gets them over the line.

  2. Liverpool's winning streak in midweek matchespublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 17 May 2022

    Southampton v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Liverpool have registered seven victories out of eight midweek games (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) in the Premier League this season.

One of Liverpool's two defeats in the top-flight came against Leicester (Tuesday) last December at the King Power Stadium.

  3. 'Southampton have a bit to prove'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 17 May 2022

    Southampton v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

    Karen Carney
Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It’s been tight in all of Liverpool’s recent games. Southampton have a bit to prove. They don’t want the crowd turning on them today.

It’s Liverpool’s second team but 72 hours after the FA Cup final Jurgen Klopp had no choice. This is a good enough team. Any of those players would fit into Southampton’s team.

I think Matip and Konate will be key. They have a spine of the team still. This Liverpool team is about intensity and the team he’d like to put out wouldn’t have been able to do that.

Like most City fans I have absolutely zero expectations for this game, but at least clawing that draw back means I don't have to worry about whether Southampton can keep it to 6-0 or less.

    Daniel

I would like to thank Klopp for going easy on Saints tonight. Thought this would be our annual 9-0.

  5. Saints win, Man City take the titlepublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 17 May 2022

    Southampton v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

A reminder that if Southampton do indeed win then that would hand the title to Manchester City tonight.

There's sure to be plenty of nervous City and Liverpool fans watching on up in the north west tonight.

Southampton may not be in great form and probably have half an eye on their summer holidays but them getting a win tonight cannot be discounted.

The Saints won this exact fixture 1-0 last season. They last won consecutive home league games against Liverpool between March 2004 and March 2013 (three in a row).

It is looking a bit drizzly down in Southampton as the goalkeepers come out to warm up.

I say warm up, it's 23 degrees and feeling pretty muggy at the moment. The rain will be a welcome relief.

Say what he may, that team from Klopp shows that the focus is now on the Paris final. Otherwise the likes of Mane would be on the bench at the least.

There's no Southampton reunion for ex-Saints striker Sadio Mane tonight as he is left out of the squad completely.

Alisson Becker and Ibrahima Konate are the only two players to retain their places in the XI from the FA Cup final.

Ralph Hasenhuttl believes Southampton are facing "possibly the best team in the world at the moment" in Liverpool.

"It's one of the most difficult games to prepare for because of the flexibility of the opponent and the unbelievable qualities they have," he said.

"They are a very dynamic, offensive team who are quick on the transition and have the quality to break down a team that has a deep block. They can show your every weakness.

"We were one down after two minutes at Anfield and it was very tough."

Southampton are ending the season in pretty torrid form.

They have lost seven of their 10 most recent league matches, as many defeats as in their opening 26 fixtures of the season.

It's also four losses in five home games for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

Southampton are playing for the first time since the 3-0 loss at Brentford on 7 May and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl makes five changes from the side that began that match.

It is a blow for Liverpool not to have their top scorer Mohamed Salah and defender Virgil van Dijk available tonight.

Both are out with injuries picked up in the FA Cup final but the Reds squad has enough strength in depth that they should be fine tonight.

There's a new bit of silverware sitting in the Liverpool trophy cabinet after they won the FA Cup at the weekend.

The Reds beat Chelsea at Wembley with that game going the distance.

Will they be showing any signs of tiredness after playing 120 minutes of football three days ago?

  18. Postpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 17 May 2022

    Good evening!

The end of the season is within touching distance as we enter the crucial final few days with plenty still to play for.

Our focus tonight is on at the top of the table as Liverpool look to close the gap on Manchester City back down to a point.

With City having a far better goal difference, Jurgen Klopp's side may also think about going all out attack in pursuit of lots of goals.

It would make for a hugely entertaining game but could prove risky for the Reds.

What a final day we have in store.

There's relegation still to be determined, the top four positions to be settled and, of course, the title race to be decided.

Unless Southampton can throw a spanner in the works for Liverpool tonight?
