  1. 'Right now it hurts, but we can be proud of what we've achieved'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

John Gibbons from The Anfield Wrap on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The mood was very down when we first set off this morning but we're getting closer to Liverpool now so spirits are a little higher. We're looking forward to getting back and having a shower and seeing our parade. We'll still enjoy our afternoon - it might just not be as special as it might have been.

"In a couple of weeks time we'll be able to reflect on the season properly and be really proud of what the football team has achieved. Right now it is hurting a little bit because it was the league last weekend, which we lost by a point but that could have always happened because Manchester City had the lead for a long time, but we were confident about the Champions League. We didn't quite do enough. We're hurting a little bit today - it is tough to take.

"We may have only been a point away in the league and a goal away in the Champions League, but we have to be fair, both of the trophies we won were by fine margins as well. They could have gone a different way."

    Back to Liverpool.

Sadio Mane will be one to keep an eye on during the parade. My colleague Luke Reddy will be taking over to bring you coverage of that in a little while.

The victory parade route will start at Allerton Maze and will travel northbound on Queens Drive towards the Fiveways roundabout and Rocket flyover. From there it will journey along:

    • Queens Drive
    • Mill Bank
    • West Derby Road
    • Islington
    • Leeds Street
    • The Strand
    • Route finishes at Blundell Street

Large crowds are still expected, despite last night's defeat, with Liverpool's men parading the FA Cup and League Cup, while the women will be a bus behind to celebrate their promotion back to the WSL.

Mohamed Salah finishes the season as Liverpool's top goalscorer with 31 goals across all competitions. The list of six is dominated by Liverpool's forwards, with Fabinho, who was on penalty duty at times throughout the season, the only midfielder on the list.

Something for Liverpool and Klopp to think about next season and moving forward? Goals from midfield? Manchester City's forwards didn't score anywhere near as many goals as Liverpool's but they had Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan all in double figures from midfield.

Having scored all those goals this season - almost at their own will at times this campaign - it's quite remarkable that Liverpool failed to score in all three of their finals this season.

It didn't do them too much harm in the League Cup and FA Cup finals with penalty shootout wins over Chelsea, but their inability to be clinical cost them last night.

Something for Klopp and his side to think about ahead of next season.

Here is Liverpool's season in numbers. Not bad, eh?

There will be a feeling within the club and among their supporters that it could have been so much better though.

There is a reason nobody has ever done the quadruple though. The last few years have been dominated by Manchester City having that opportunity and now Liverpool this campaign. Will either come close next season?

  10. 'Courtois did an amazing job'published at 13:48 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Rafael van der Vaart
Former Tottenham & Real Madrid midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Thibaut Courtois is doing OK - no, he's doing brilliant.

He is so tall. He is the perfect size for a goalkeeper. When you're a defender and you know he's behind you it stops a lot of panic.

    He did an amazing job.

Speaking after the game, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said he does not get enough respect - having produced a stunning performance to deny Liverpool.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper made several excellent saves, particularly in a first half the Reds dominated.

"I said that when Madrid plays finals, they win. I was on the good side of history," Courtois said.

"I saw a lot of tweets coming my way that I would get humbled today - it was the other way round."

Speaking to BT Sport, he added: "Today I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work to put respect on my name as I don't think I get enough respect, especially in England."

  14. 'There will be a focus on Mane at the parade today'published at 13:24 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    John Murray
BBC commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

When Sadio Mane spoke on the eve of the final and he said he's going to make a statement that "everybody will be happy with" that seemed to suggest that he was going to stay.

But then on the eve of the final in the conference with Jurgen Klopp suddenly the mood seemed to be that he wouldn't be staying and he'd going to be Bayern Munich.

We'll have to see what happens over the course of the next couple of days. There will be a focus on him at the parade this afternoon.

  15. 'Don't be surprised if Liverpool are in the final next year'published at 13:18 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It will feel pretty flat for the Liverpool players, Jurgen Klopp, coaching staff and fans at this moment in time, but when you look at the grand scheme of things and the season they've had is incredible.

The standard of football they've produced - they've just come up short by one point in the Premier League and they've just come up short by one goal in the biggest competition, the Champions League, the one they all want to win.

Jurgen Klopp's message right - they will be back and don't be surprised if they are in the final next year.

  16. 'Liverpool will bottle this pain and go again'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times on BBC Breakfast

Liverpool will be feeling absolutely heartbroken this morning. They will be clearly concerned for the fans and that puts any game into perspective.

You have to celebrate Real Madrid's achievements - Vinicius Jr got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Karim Benzema has been outstanding this season and Carlo Ancelotti is now deservedly fated as one of the best coaches of all time.

For Liverpool they will just bottle this pain and go again next season.

  17. 'Real didn't win it by luck'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is an argument to say that Real Madrid's name was on that trophy and not by luck.

They have beaten Paris St-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool. That is not by luck. That is because they've got an incredible manager, an incredible mentality in that competition and they've got some blooming good players. Their big players turned up last night.

It was probably because of the brilliance from Thibaut Courtois that Real won.

It just wasn't meant to be for Liverpool. They came up against an inspired goalkeeper and an inspired football club and their fans demand that they win that trophy and they have again.

  18. From embarrassment to glory - 'remarkable Real'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Real Madrid lift their 14th European Cup after beating Liverpool in ParisImage source, Getty Images

Real Madrid's latest European triumph has been built on drama and incredible comebacks - and has been achieved eight months after they were on the wrong end of one of the great Champions League shocks.

Last September, the Spanish giants were conducting an inquest after losing at home to Moldova's Sheriff Tiraspol in the group stage.

On Saturday, Real were crowned champions of Europe for a record 14th time - twice as many as any other club - after defeating Liverpool 1-0 in Paris.

At the full-time whistle, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti celebrated with his players on the pitch as they took in the scale of their achievement.

"They were probably not even the better team so many times in the Champions League this season," French football expert Julien Laurens told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: "These guys have done remarkable things.

"Real Madrid were not expected to do this, but with every hurdle, they have overcome it with grit and determination."

  19. 'A miserable night on every level imaginable'published at 12:54 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool's magnificent season once offered up the tantalising prospect of a historic quadruple only to end amid the chaos of Paris with a lop-sided mixture of emotions.

This was a miserable night for Liverpool and their supporters on every level imaginable as Real Madrid did what they do best and won the Champions League for a 14th time.

Real's 1-0 win, secured by Vinicius Junior's 59th-minute winner, etched coach Carlo Ancelotti's name into the history books indelibly with his record fourth triumph as a coach in this tournament.

For Liverpool, it capped six days of desperate disappointment after missing out on the Premier League to Manchester City by a single point then losing to this experienced, street-smart Real team.
