  1. 'It was nothing to do with the Liverpool fans'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

The area where the Liverpool fans were trying to get in is where people live so where the flats are etc. At the other side is a motorway so it is completely different for the Real Madrid fans trying to get into the crowd - that is why they would have experienced less issues. It was nothing to do with Liverpool fans - that became very clear.

At the end of the game the TV crews were mobbed - they were very unsavoury scenes.

Beautiful afternoon. Wonderful hospitality from the Parisians. The locals were inquisitive about the football and very friendly. Arrived at Saint Denis 2.5 before kickoff. Treated like animals on the way to the stadium. No concern for fans safety outside section Y. I only saw about 10 fans held back for not having tickets or having fraudulent ones. The one gate in use was then closed for an hour whilst precisely nothing happened, apart from being peppered sprayed. When the gate did open, it appeared everyone’s ticket scanned ok. Fans were frustrated but mostly patient.

  3. 'It felt really dangerous'published at 10:40 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Paul Salt
BBC Radio Merseyside presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live

I arrived at the ground just before 19:45 in Paris (18:45 in the UK) because I'd been on air until 19:00. I made my way to up to gate Y where I was due to go in and when I arrived it became pretty clear, pretty quickly, that the crowd was building up. The queue was in a zig zag formation almost but it would move a little bit and come to a standstill so it wasn't consistently moving.

Quite quickly I was thinking 'this is ridiculous. I've got an hour and a quarter until kick-off and I'm not sure if I'm going to get in'. As I got closer it became apparent that they were closing the gates - I think there were four or five entry gates - and it meant the queue wasn't moving anywhere.

It felt really dangerous. As time went on it felt more and more dangerous because there was nowhere for the crowd to go. For some reason they didn't explain why the gates were closed and of course that does get people agitated. I have to say though, everyone around me was really well behaved. There was no sign of crowd disorder around me. There were people around me really starting to panic, and obviously panic does spread doesn't it.

I paid over £2,500 for my girlfriend and me to travel to Paris from Hawick in the Scottish Borders. I'd arranged the trip as a surprise and had also planned to propose after the game. We arrived a couple of hours before kick off and within half an hour we were as cramped as sardines, no one could move, pressed up against the barricades. Luckily it wasn't overly hot as we were given no water and people that did have it we're getting it confiscated as you eventually got through security. Woman, children, older people were pepper sprayed without cause, my girlfriend one of them. As I pleaded her case that she'd done nothing wrong I was pushed to the ground and beaten by the police. Unsure what caused it but my bald head was as red as my top with blood, looked like I had a swimming cap on. To make things worse during the commotion I lost the engagement ring. Something needs done

  5. 'It was so wrong on so many levels'published at 10:30 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was so wrong on so many levels last night. I arrived at the ground about 17:00 local time because I was working for the American TV channel CBS, little by little the atmosphere started to become flat when we recognised the game was going to be delayed. There were big gaps in the stands.

The only information we had was through Twitter and 5 Live - I tried to listen to that. The coverage made false the statements from Uefa.

None of the information about fans arriving late or having fake tickets rained true.

It just looked like the police didn't know what sort of event they were dealing with. For Uefa not to inform them or come up with better solutions is a disgrace. It really is.

  6. 'Fake tickets caused a build-up of fans'published at 10:26 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    UEFA

Here is Uefa's statement on the issues outside the ground:

"In the lead-up to the game, the turnstiles at the Liverpool end became blocked by thousands fans who had purchased fake tickets which did not work in the turnstiles. This created a build-up of fans trying to get in.

"As a result, the kick off was delayed by 35 minutes to allow as many fans as possible with genuine tickets to gain access.

"As numbers outside the stadium continued to build up after kick off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them away from the stadium.

"UEFA is sympathetic to those affected by these events and will further review these matters urgently together with the French police and authorities, and with the French Football Federation."

  7. 'Supporters should not have to witness those scenes'published at 10:23 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Liverpool

Liverpool's statement on the issues outside read:

"We are hugely disappointed at the stadium entry issues and breakdown of the security perimeter that Liverpool fans faced this evening at Stade de France.

"This is the greatest match in European football and supporters should not have to experience the scenes we have witnessed tonight.

"We have officially requested a formal investigation into the causes of these unacceptable issues."

  8. Postpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

We're going to shift our focus back to the "security issues" that happened outside the ground before kick-off again now. We'll go back to the football at some stage, I promise.

In case you're unaware Liverpool have asked for an investigation into the "unacceptable scenes" outside the ground that meant many of their fans were left outside either for a period of the game or the whole match. That is despite kick-off being delayed for 36 minutes too.

  9. 'I am a record man'published at 10:15 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti became the first manager to ever win four European Cups last night.

He told BT Sport: "I can't believe it. We had a fantastic season. We did really well. It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot, more so in the first half. In the end I think we deserved to win this competition.

"We're really happy. What can I say? I can't say more.

"I am a record man. I had luck to come here last year and have a fantastic season. A fantastic club, a really good squad with a lot of quality and mental character.

    "The season was top.

"I think we passed through really difficult games. The supporters helped us a lot in the last game. They helped us tonight. We're happy and they're happy."

Ian: Liverpool entered four competitions. Won two and came second in the other two. How is that anything other than an incredibly successful season?

NMP: Objectively, 2 titles and 2 finals is a good season. Subjectively, Liverpool lost the 2 they wanted the most, and couldn't score a goal in 330 minutes in their finals. Can't argue with that.

  11. 'Liverpool had a remarkable season but this will feel like a failure'published at 10:06 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times

It was disappointing from Liverpool's perspective.

They'd had a remarkable season. They've won two cups, they've pushed one of the best teams I've ever in 35-40 years of reporting in Manchester City - they pushed them all the way to wire but City were deservedly winners because of the their quality - but they failed.

You look at the quality of Carlo Ancelotti, who is probably one of the nicest men in football. He has this phrase "football is the most important of the least important things" and that actually sums up last night. We could be talking about a major incident.

  12. Is Liverpool's season now a disappointment?published at 10:02 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

On Monday Night Club Micah Richards asked the question that if Liverpool lost in the final on Saturday would they consider their season a disappointment.

Jurgen Klopp's side were on for an unprecedented Quadruple until the final week of the domestic season when Manchester City recovered from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa and claim a fourth Premier League title in five seasons.

Saturday's defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final means the Reds have ended the season with the FA Cup and Carabao Cup - both of which they won via a penalty shootout against Chelsea.

A good season? An average season? A disappointing one?

  13. 'Real Madrid is never in panic - that is their key'published at 09:57 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Rafael van der Vaart
Former Tottenham & Real Madrid midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

    It is unbelievable.

We always say in football that you need a little bit of luck and Real Madrid have had a lot of luck along the way this season. Maybe in the end it wasn't luck because they have a lot of quality and a great coach.

It is a lot to do with the confidence that they have from winning finals and playing big games. You could see in the first half that Liverpool were really good but you can sell that Real Madrid don't panic. That is their key. Real Madrid is never in panic.

  14. From embarrassment to glory - 'remarkable Real'published at 09:55 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Real Madrid's latest European triumph has been built on drama and incredible comebacks - and has been achieved eight months after they were on the wrong end of one of the great Champions League shocks.

Last September, the Spanish giants were conducting an inquest after losing at home to Moldova's Sheriff Tiraspol in the group stage.

On Saturday, Real were crowned champions of Europe for a record 14th time - twice as many as any other club - after defeating Liverpool 1-0 in Paris.

At the full-time whistle, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti celebrated with his players on the pitch as they took in the scale of their achievement.

"They were probably not even the better team so many times in the Champions League this season," French football expert Julien Laurens told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: "These guys have done remarkable things.

"Real Madrid were not expected to do this, but with every hurdle, they have overcome it with grit and determination."

  16. 'Book the hotel' - Klopppublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Liverpool fans have been told to "book the hotel" for next year's Champions League final in Istanbul by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in the final in Paris to deny the English side a second title in three years.

It means they finish the season having won the FA Cup and League Cup.

"I have a strong feeling we will come again. The boys are competitive. We will have an outstanding group next season," said Klopp.

"Where's it [the final] next season? Istanbul? Book the hotel."

Right, let's shift focus for a little while and talk about what happened on the pitch instead. We'll go back to the "unacceptable issues", as Liverpool called them, outside the ground in around half an hour or so.

It was a record-extending 14th European Cup for Real Madrid and you can about how they did it in Phil McNulty's report from Paris...

  19. 'We felt very vulnerable'published at 09:30 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Kevin and James, the two Liverpool fans that Chris Warburton mentions below, talking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We arrived at the stadium two-and-a-half hours before kick-off. We were gate Y where there was a two-and-a-half hour queue minimum. We queued and queued and then there was what can only be described as people trying to rush the gates and these weren't Liverpool fans - they were local people.

"The police were trying to tear gas people. We were with a gentleman and girl and she was getting quite nervous because the tear gas was happening towards the other gates. We were trapped in the middle. After the tear gassing had stopped we made the decision, after Uefa had advised us to try gate A, and we were getting tear gassed there too. We walked away and they started shutting the gate again. The advice was to walk away basically. We tried a different gate and then made the decision to leave. We felt very vulnerable - there were loads of local near the tube and we felt very at risk. We're trying to find a taxi, which we can't do - we feel in fear. The police won't let us back to the stadium.

"There were hundreds, if not thousands stuck outside. They were letting people in gate Y at half-time so we did make a mistake leaving."

  20. 'Please can you help us?'published at 09:25 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Chris Warburton
    5 Live presenter in Paris

I did a hit into 5 Live at half-time and then we decided it was probably time to get out of the area around the ground.

As we were leaving two Liverpool fans, one around his 60s and another maybe in his 30s, came up to us and said 'please can you help us?'. They looked really worried. These were guys who had followed Liverpool around Europe and they'd been there and done it. They were really concerned. They had tickets but never managed to get into the ground. They said they didn't know what to do because there was a real atmosphere in the air, which was right, there really was.

They said they didn't want to get the Metro because they weren't sure about down there, they couldn't get a cab and they didn't know how to get back to the hotel. They were genuinely worried.
