Kevin: So UEFA Champions League final a complete and utter shambles! Why do the French police feel it’s totally acceptable to pepper spray my 70 year old wife whilst she was queuing peacefully to get in the ground? The investigation will be a total whitewash

Wasn't just the stadium the police used tear gas - I was at the fanzone with my son - at the end of the game the fans were impeccable trying to leave and then tear gas or pepper spray was used - eyes and sore throat even this morning

  3. 'One of the worst experiences of my life'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

BBC journalist Nick Parrott, who was outside the ground in a personal capacity, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I have just been pepper sprayed for the first time in my life. I have been to the Champions League final before and I have never been pepper sprayed before.

"I was outside Gate Y which has been opening and closing repeatedly over the last hour and a half but nobody has been going through. The security staff on the other side advanced and sprayed pepper spray."

While, Liverpool West Derby MP Ian Byrne tweeted , externalto say he had "endured one of the worst experiences in my life", blaming Uefa for "horrendous security and organisation putting lives at risk".

"I pray no fans have been injured because of the disgraceful lack of organisation and expertise," he added.

Very little blame could have been attached to the Liverpool fans last night. I'm sure there were some fans without tickets but there is a common theme. There are two footballing events at two of the biggest, well-known grounds in the world, in Wembley and the Stade de France, and it has gone wrong twice.

I live in Paris and am a Man Utd supporter, but I do think that UEFA have behaved appallingly here! I've been to a quite a few matches in Paris. It's never the best of atmospheres. Even for the Ligue 1 games at the Parcs Des Princes, there is never enough of a police presence and you get a sense that things are just a hair's breadth from going awfully wrong. There was only one way the French authorities and UEFA were going to push this, wasn't there? I feel sorry for all the Liverpool fans for what they have had to endure.

Terrifying experience - it was getting close to blind panic, in fact I only managed to get out by going through the press van enclosure after a fan was taken in there suffering a panic attack. The press teams kindly escorted us out to safety. The police & stewards only made things dangerous to point of life threatening!

One of the positives around social media is now that journalists and respected people are coming out and telling what actually happened. Uefa were briefing journalists straight away but in this day and age they are less able to create that fiction.

The atmosphere where I was the and fans were very calm. You literally just faced a wall of police and a narrowing of entry and you just couldn't get in.

My son and I were at the game. What I don't understand is we had three different "kettle" checkpoints to get through, all very packed and edgy. The third checkpoint was a formal one with proper people where tickets were validated. That was well before the turnstiles. The UEFA statement doesn't make any sense as the tickets were being checked before turnstiles. Very intimidating atmosphere, almost worse after the game where local gangs were throwing themselves about but literally no visible police presence. Really poor evening.

  10. 'The vast majority of fans behaved in an exemplary manner'published at 11:53 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Merseyside Police have released the following statement in the last half an hour:

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Green said: “We are aware of a number of reports relating to incidents both before and after last night’s Champions League Final at the Stade de France in Paris.

“We are also aware that Liverpool FC have requested a formal investigation from UEFA and we will be linking in with both the club, UEFA and the UK Football Policing Unit to pass on the observations of our officers who attended the game and took part in the pre-match meetings with the relevant authorities.

“As with all European matches officers from Merseyside were deployed in France to work in an observatory and advisory capacity with the local officers, and they have reported the vast majority of fans behaved in an exemplary manner, arriving at turnstiles early and queuing as directed and their observations will be passed on to the relevant authorities as part of the debrief for the game.

"Many thousands of fans have travelled throughout this season to matches across Europe and we have worked closely with our supporter groups, the Club and European hosts to ensure that the matches passed without incident and fans were kept safe. Our officers returning today will conduct a formal debrief to ensure that we can fully support any subsequent investigation following last night’s game.

“We know that people would have witnessed a lot of distressing scenes last night and we wish everyone returning home from Paris a safe journey. Our focus today will be supporting Liverpool city council with the policing of the homecoming parade.”

    Ian Broudie

It was scary to be honest. I've been to games all over the world but I've never really quite experienced anything like that.

I was in a car and there was a bottleneck on the road and we could see officials with their vans, people climbing over fences and players families not knowing what to do. It was weird.

Once we'd managed to get out of the car we couldn't get into the stadium. There were a lot of French kids hanging around.

Chaotic organisation by UEFA - very poor signage around the ground. Police pepper sprayed us whilst in the queue to even get close to turnstiles and that caused panic and crushing. Then we had to queue for nearly two hours more - fans were not late - UEFA were incompetent

  13. 'I don't understand why police thought Liverpool fans might cause an incident'published at 11:35 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Steve Crossman
BBC Radio 5 Live presenter in Paris

We were obviously sat around the halfway line and around the 87th minute a real flood of police came out and all in front of the Liverpool fans. There was nobody in front of the Real Madrid fans.

It communicates that the police thought the Liverpool fans in the stadium might cause a public order incident on the full-time whistle. I just don't understand why they thought that would be the case.

I was at the game last night. We arrived at 17:30 and got in with no problem. No queue on the turnstiles. All entry points opened at 18:00 but thousands of fans chose to stay outside the entrance as there were numerous stands selling drinks. There was no problem getting in. It seems most left it until the last minute.

  15. 'To treat people like that was absolutely disgusting'published at 11:23 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a complete mess and it is fortunate that we're reflecting on the event and not talking about a major disaster.

Where do you start? I was sitting in the press box and I saw Kelly Cates' tweet about the trouble inside and then there was effectively the lie from Uefa about the late arrival of fans. The Liverpool fans inside the ground booed it when it was repeated because they knew it was a lie - they knew that was happening outside.

I arrived about five and a half hours because you know the configuration with the Stade de France is an issue. The whole thing was exasperated by what the police were doing - they were funnelling fans into an smaller and smaller areas.

Configuration, organisation, poor stewarding and twitchy police were all issues. To treat people like that last night was absolutely disgusting.

Took my 84 year old mum to the game last night. She's been a Liverpool supporter her whole life but this was her first European final. We got to the ground at 18.30 local time and she was in her wheelchair. We both had genuine tickets but were told they were fake and when she asked the police office to hand her ticket back she was pepper sprayed and rolled off behind a cage so she could "calm down". When she tried to leave one of the police officers put some sort of bike lock around her wheelchair and this wasn't released until the game was finished. The whole trip cost me £5000. I was in Madrid and it was organised so well but this was just an absolute disgrace.

  17. 'Shambles' - Robertson criticises final organisationpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

The organisation of the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris was a "shambles", according to Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Robertson says he had given a ticket to a friend but he was denied entry for the game.

"One of my mates got told it was a fake which I assure you it wasn't," he said.

"It was a shambles really," the Scot told BBC Sport.

  18. 'People next to me didn't get in until half-time'published at 11:05 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Paul Salt
BBC Radio Merseyside presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live

The people around me all seemed to be law-abiding fans who had made all the right preparations for going to a game.

I spoke to two guys next to me, who arrived at the ground two-and-a-half hours before kick-off, and they didn't get into the ground until half-time.

It just seems to me that there was a complete breakdown in organisation from the French police and Uefa and a lack of communication.

When you're in a situation like that you need to be told what is going on but there were no stewards anywhere. We didn't even know that the kick-off had been delayed.

  19. 'Situation not caused by fans arriving late'published at 11:00 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Steve Crossman
BBC Radio 5 Live presenter in Paris

I saw a tweet from Ian Ladyman from the Mail roughly three hours before kick-off, maybe slightly less saying 'just got in, wasn't great, I would advise Liverpool fans to get to the stadium early'. By that point we'd be in the car to get the stadium for 90 mins and it should be a 13-minute journey. We thought 'this obviously isn't great'. We jumped out the car and were told very quickly by authorities there to get behind certain barriers - it wasn't particularly nice.

I've been thinking a lot overnight about the "late arrival of fans" statement from Uefa. I was there, and my colleagues were there, two-and-a-half hours before the game and we were surrounded by Liverpool fans. The late arrival of fans is not the reason that happened.

Got to the underpass at 18:10, the police had closed all entrances to the stadium bar one walkway up to it, it took 2.5 hours to travel 200 metres because they were filtering people literally 2 at a time to check tickets, children were getting crushed and crying. Finally made it to gate Z at 20:45, waited for 45 minutes. Gate was closed because the 'stadium was full' when I finally got in there were 4 rows almost entirely empty. Shameful, this has nothing to do it with it being moved last minute, they had the numbers. I've never seen a police presence like it, there were thousands of them, it was just sheer incompetence.
