I arrived at the ground about 6:15. The queues underneath the underpass to get through the security cordon were atrocious. Having waited for 1–1.5 hrs to get through that we were greeted by massive queues at all gates. I had a ticket (from the club) for Gate Z but this don’t open until 9:15 (15 mins after scheduled ko time). French police were randomly setting off tear gas and reports of disabled fans being pepper sprayed were rife. No communication and chaos ruled. Now an attempt by UEFA and the French police to control the narrative. It cannot be allowed to happen

  2. 'It was a joke - I paid a £1000 for my ticket'published at 09:15 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Tyler, a Liverpool fan, on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We arrived at the ground around 19:00 local time (kick-off was 21:00 in Paris) and we were all queuing up and around half an hour went by and no barriers had opened at all. They started to tear gas the barrier next to us so we see people running. We tried to get in but our tickets were 'broken' and they were just throwing people out, punching them, just doing anything to stop people getting in.

"There were people in wheelchairs, old guys with walking sticks and everything and it wasn't on at all. It wasn't just seperate people getting tear gassed or sprayed - it was groups of people. It was a joke.

"I found out today (on Saturday) that I was getting a ticket. I paid a thousand pound for the ticket. It was the happiest I'd been in a long time. To get in and not have my ticket scanned three times and it not work and then to be pushed and kicked, it just isn't on."

  3. 'It was pretty scary'published at 09:10 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Chris Warburton
    5 Live presenter in Paris

It was a bit of a weird one for us because we were never intending to be at the game because we didn't have tickets. We were being asked by 5 Live to go to a sports bar where there were about 250 fans but as soon as we saw what was happening we made the decision to go and report from around the ground.

When we got there it was a pretty tight cordon when you tried to get anywhere near where people might be. We went to this particular underpass and there were loads of local lads around the place as well and the police were having none of it were them and tear gas let off. People, including us, were running in the other direction.

It was a not a pleasant atmosphere in any shape or form. It was pretty scary around there to be absolutely honest.

I got to the state de France station at 6.30pm and didn't gain entry to the ground until after 10pm when the game was on 43 minutes. I've never felt so uncomfortable and threatened at a football game. Police indiscriminately spraying fans with proper spray several times when we were in orderly queues. Hundreds of local lads loitering around, starting trouble and charging at people - they shouldn't have been anywhere near the stadium. I was in Madrid in 2019 and that was so well organised, this couldn't have been further from that! An absolute disgrace and an insult to the thousands of orderly fans who've spent an awful lot of money to watch their team play in Europe's greatest match!

  5. 'It was just handled really badly'published at 09:00 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    BBC Breakfast

Liverpool fan Phil Blundell on BBC Breakfast: "It was just shambolic organisation ultimately. We got off the train at about 18:30 and started trying to walk up to the ground. We found on the way back that it was basically a 10-minute walk and throughout all the bottlenecks and the non-existent checks where they were stopping people. It probably took 50 minutes to get to the turnstile which was closed. It wasn't a particularly enjoyable experience.

"I was quite fortunate on the balance of things. When I got the turnstiles I was quite happy to take a step back because there's no point standing against a closed gate when more people are turning up. I believe children and people in wheelchairs were getting tear gassed and they seemed to want to use the tear gas a primary thing. Tear gas is designed for crowd dispersal but there was nowhere to disperse too - you couldn't really go back because people were behind you. Where were people meant to go? I'm not sure. It was just handled really badly. I've been to three of the last five European Cup finals - Kyiv was fine, Madrid was fine, this wasn't even close to the same level of organisation.

"Uefa saying that fans arrived late is a complete lie. We left the bar about 18:15 and there were about 15 of us and we all got split up and got in at different points.

"If there was another European Cup final at this ground I'd probably give it a miss to be quite honest and as someone who has been to five in my life that is saying something."

We arrived at the stadium 4 hours before the game. Only 3 staff checking tickets were legitimate before allowing us to the turnstiles. Still took 90 mins to get to turnstiles. Police had 2 vans parked across the pavement forcing everyone through a very small space between vans and wall at an underpass leading to ground. Coming out the gates were locked and same situation with all fans using 1 gate. Police aggressive and stewards clueless. Very very dangerous going in and coming out. Have UEFA and police learnt nothing?

  8. 'A huge organisational and security failure'published at 08:47 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    John Murray
BBC radio commentator on BBC Breakfast

This morning we should be basking in the afterglow of one of the great sporting events - that is what the Champions League is. But, there was an inescapable feeling during the course of it and certainly this morning that it has been a huge organisational and security failure. There is going to be an investigation but there is a lot of upset, frustrated, disappointed and angry people this morning, who should have had one of the experiences of their lives last night.

  9. I have asthma and was tear gassed twice - Liverpool fanpublished at 08:42 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Liverpool supporters have described the scenes before their club's Champions League Final match with Real Madrid as "an absolute disgrace".

Fans travelled to France for the game, but there were distressing scenes before kick-off as French police fired tear gas into groups of supporters. One Liverpool fan described how she was struggling: "I've got really bad asthma and I've been tear gassed twice".

I am an LFC supporter, season ticket holder, and went to the match last night with my wife. I am a retired lawyer from Devon. We are not hooligans. We arrived 2.5 hours early. To find ourselves trapped behind barricades unable to move for 1.5 hours, with more and more people being allowed to join the crush, with no explanation or organisation from the police, with my wife in tears because we were being crushed, was utterly shocking. Unfortunately I was taken ill whilst we were trapped but the police refused to let me out - thank you to the LFC supporters who lifted me and my wife over the barricades so I could receive (excellent) medical attention. I thankfully recovered and we went in to the stadium- but our view was blocked by 12 people standing in the gangway next to our seats who did not have tickets. All were French speaking, none British. The stewards would not do anything to move or remove them in spite of our requests - an unbelievable safety risk. The whole experience was one of the worst of my life - It cost me thousands of pounds for this frightening level of incompetence. Appalling. Shocking. Distressing. I will never go to a Champions League final again - have they learned nothing from Hillsborough?

Just in case you haven't seen any images or videos from outside the Stade de France last night these are some that will help paint a picture for you.

Kick-off was delayed by 36 minutes with the Liverpool end probably just only just half full at the original kick-off of 20:00 BST.

  12. 'Supporters should not have to witness those scenes'published at 08:25 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Liverpool

Just a reminder at this point that Liverpool have asked for an investigation into the "unacceptable scenes" we saw outside the Stade de France last night.

    Liverpool's statement in full read:

"We are hugely disappointed at the stadium entry issues and breakdown of the security perimeter that Liverpool fans faced this evening at Stade de France.

"This is the greatest match in European football and supporters should not have to experience the scenes we have witnessed tonight.

"We have officially requested a formal investigation into the causes of these unacceptable issues."

  13. 'Fans should be front and central'published at 08:21 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times on BBC Breakfast

Uefa's response will be to probably try and blame the fans. They have already talked about fake tickets - but you've already heard from Andrew Robertson about a ticket he got from the club and that being claimed as a fake. We have to be clear-eyed - there were some ticketless fans who did try and get in, but the people I saw trying to climb the fences were predominantly local kids.

In the build-up to this game Uefa were speaking about how important the fans are - and we all remember what the games were like behind closed doors when no fans were allowed. Fans and the way they are treated should be front and central to any match like this because nobody wants to go back to games behind closed doors. Fans are vital and they were treated so poorly.

Speaking to fans last night, I was amazed how patient they were. Particularly when they were then being pepper sprayed. You had little kids - 10-year-old girls - who were turning round to their parents and saying 'please just take me home'.

  14. 'Fans bear no responsibility'published at 08:17 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

Around 10 minutes after kick-off, Football Supporters Europe said "thousands are still trapped outside the stadium, remaining calm in the face of a completely unreasonable situation".

The body added: "Fans at the Champions League final bear no responsibility for tonight's fiasco."

Tony: Firstly - well done Real on their victory- Liverpool were by far the better team. Courtois saved them, literally. Fake tickets may have been a small issue but at turnstile z I waited 2.5 hours where gates were closed as we all behaved impeccably. UEFA are a disgrace.

  16. 'Fortunate we're not talking about a major disaster'published at 08:09 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief Football Writer for the Times on BBC Breakfast

There was an incompetence from the authorities - there was a lack of leadership, poor stewarding, the police being twitchy. They were indiscriminately going and pepper spraying and then tear gas through the fences towards the Liverpool fans.

I was in the press box when they made the first announcement about the game being delayed because of the "late arrival of fans". Fans did not arrive late - they were arriving on time. You know that for games like this fans want to get to the ground early and some were queuing for two-three hours because of the strange configuration of the Stade de France when you come up for the Metro. That was exasperated by some of the blocks that they'd put in place.

We are fortunate that we're not talking about a major disaster this morning.

  17. 'There was a clear lack of any coherent strategy or plan'published at 08:03 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    BBC Breakfast

More from BBC Breakfast's John Watson, who has been explaining his first-hand experience from Paris: "I saw a small number of people gaining access to the stadium and evading security - you can only imagine that is because they didn't have tickets. At that point security and organisers perhaps became spooked and became concerned that we might see a repeat of some of the scenes that we saw before the Euro 2020 last summer at Wembley.

"What was clear was that there was a clear lack of any coherent strategy or plan in dealing with the number of fans that were building up at the turnstiles as organisers prevented them gaining access to the ground. They were clearly concerned that they wanted to filter out those that did and didn't have tickets. From what I could see, broadly, the Liverpool fans were doing what they were being asked to do and being kept at those entry points but there was a lack of communication about why they weren't being allowed in."

I was at turnstile y last night for nearly 2 hours before the game, my first final ever and there were a few french people who had got passed the first security checks who had no ticket. The authorities were a joke and put genuine fans at high risk, we got sprayed for standing still with our hands up never witnessed anything like this in my life and has last a serious imprint on not only me but the thousands of genuine fans waiting to watch our team.

  19. 'It made no sense - Uefa will face serious questions'published at 07:53 British Summer Time 29 May 2022

    BBC Breakfast

BBC Breakfast's John Watson has been on the programme this morning explaining his first-hand experience from Paris: "Some fans queued for hours were exposed to pepper spray and tear gas as police tried to quell the swelling number of fans that were being held at those stadium entry points. There was very little communication to the fans outside about why they weren't being allowed entry to the stadium last night.

"The claims from the Uefa that the match was delayed because of the late arrival of a number of fans certainly didn't reflect the number of fans who had waited for up to three hours to gain access.

"There will be huge questions of Uefa now and why the reasoning for the delay was the late arrival of fans when clearly many fans had been queuing for around three hours. There will also be questions about the heavy use of tear gas and pepper spray. It made no sense last night with many queuing patiently. Uefa will face serious questions."
