How many people in this ground thought if only Dominic Calvert-Lewin would have been in that six yard box? It was a beautiful ball, nothing Chelsea could do about it but Anthony Gordon just couldn't get his head on it in the right place.

There were periods of time when Bed Godfrey was the best defender for Everton last season, he's been a class act. He can play at left-back, left centre-back, right centre-back, anywhere and he has often been the best player in the team so it's a huge moment for Everton and maybe this early part of the season.

The latest corner is played short to Mason Mount, whose low effort is deflected behind for a fourth corner in a row for Chelsea. Reece James delivers again and this one is headed behind by Mason Holgate for corner number five, which this time James sends far too long.

And Mason Holgate defends it well, heading behind Reece James' delivery before the second delivery is headed away by Nathan Patterson.

It was an incredibly strong challenge but I thought it was a fair one. I was talking to Everton fans before the game and I said as long as they keep everybody fit, they've got a good, strong looking defence and that's lasted 10 minutes. It's a real shame.

Did not look good from the moment Ben Godfrey made that challenge. He signalled instantly to the bench and Jordan Pickford demanded a stretcher moments later.

Real concern for Godfrey and a very length delay. So unfortunate for the defender.

  11. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 12 mins

    Everton 0-0 Chelsea

Huge blow for Everton and Ben Godfrey, who had missed the final seven games of last season but got himself fit during the summer only to see his return today scuppered early doors.

Mason Holgate is coming on in Godfrey's place.

    Everton 0-0 Chelsea

Ben Godfrey makes a mess of a back pass and Jordan Pickford scrambles to try and prevent a corner. It looks like it just goes out but Pickford sweeps the ball to keep it in and play goes on with Kai Havertz in possession inside the box. Godfrey gets back to make a crucial tackle, but it looks like he has really hurt himself doing so.

Looks like Everton are going to have to make an early change here.

Reece James was missed massively alongside Ben Chilwell for a large part of last season and one of the reasons why Chelsea really weren't in contention.

I'm not worried about Everton. The fans are worried because of how close they came to relegation last season, but I always try and be positive. Their performances were good at the end of the season, the commitment was there.

Frank Lampard did a terrific job in galvanising the supporters, now he's had time to work in pre-season. I think they'll be okay.
