"We came here to play with good confidence because the pre-season was good. We scored but then conceded a strange goal.

"Second half I think it was our best period. We had 25 minutes we dominated the game completely but didn't score.

"The players played how we wanted them to play and we are proud of them."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon to BBC Sport: "It was a very special moment - it has been a long time coming. I haven't played many games at the club for various reasons but it feels a special moment.

"The manager has put faith in me and I've had a very good pre-season. I've had a lot of injuries and a lot of stuff hasn't gone my way but i've had a good pre-season.

"He [Antonio Conte] is very demanding but a very good coach and a very good guy. We didn't panic after going behind - we kept our heads up and kept playing how Antonio wants us to play.

"The signings have come in and gelled straight away and we have a real togetherness about this season. We haven't put any targets together as a side - we just want to keep going in a positive way and winning as many games as possible."

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams:

"It was tough, we know every game in the Premier League is going to be tough. We are still getting to know each other, we’ve got players coming in left, right and centre and it’s about getting to know each other better. I think when that comes together the results will start improving.

"I don’t like to make excuses because we weren’t good enough today. Credit to Newcastle, they scored two incredible goals but we need to be better but there is no time to dwell on this game because the games will come quick and there’s no time to be miserable or sad. We have to learn from our mistakes.

"For most of the lads, the Premier League is new – for a lot of the lads today that was their debut. It’s going to be a rollercoaster but we need to stick together and keep learning."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to Sky Sports: “It was a good performance for the final result because we got three points but especially because we deserved to win. We created many chances and I like the way we had the possession and the way he pressed very high and the way we tried to win the ball again when we lost possession. There were a lot of situations that we working with on the team.

"The message was very clear that we’ve signed new players to improve our squad because our squad was really poor last season and the Champions League spot was a big achievement. Our first goal was to improve the squad, not just players physically but also mentally. We wanted the right players for my philosophy and today I preferred to use players from last season because they are reliable than new players because we’ve only spent two weeks with some of those players because of injuries and Covid. We’ve used common sense to pick the players that have the right characteristics to improve our squad. We have to work to improve and we have an ambition to make ourselves better than yesterday.

“Being happy or not happy was not the problem. It was finding a solution to playing four competitions - to do this you need a squad of 20-22 players and honestly last season was really poor in the medical aspect. We have improved that aspect. The club always pays attention - they have shown common sense, not only to spend money, but to get players with certain characteristics to improve the squad.”

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to Sky Sports: “After a good start, like we always have, we couldn’t follow anymore. The opponent switched into the next gear - we tried to defend a little bit deeper and automatically you have less pressure on the crosses and you have to defend better one on one in the box and we didn’t do that well enough.

“The second half showed the gap between the two teams. They are fighting for the title and Champions League and we are fighting for every point.

“We couldn’t support each other enough today to make the result look a little bit more friendly. The defending of the crosses was lacking today - we have to do this much better. We worked hard on it in pre-season but they are physically dynamically and good at the crosses - they punish you immediately for this weakness.

“It is clear we need some more quality in some positions, but this is nothing new and we will look.”

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Match of the Day: "We were men against men in the box but we didn’t defend the ball. It is isn’t about being organised - it is one v one and we haven’t been good enough. They switched up a gear after 20 minutes and we weren’t good enough.

"What we wanted to do worked quite well and we had good moments. We are lacking defending in and around the box and that’s why we’ve tried to do it with a back five but it is about being stronger individually.

"Against quality teams every mistake gets punished immediately and that’s what happened today. We tried to change the shape at half-the and be more offensive but when you’re defending around the box you want the feeling that they are never going to score and I didn’t have that feeling today.

"It is tough here against this opponent and compete against the quality that they have up front but we thought we were a little bit better defending in this way but the reality was different."

Nottingham Forest

Forest boss Steve Cooper:

"We were second best in the game no doubt – Newcastle looked a good team. We coped okay in terms of possession and territory but didn’t play well enough with the ball.

"Yes they had loads of the ball but we stayed compact and progressive with our defending. But what wasn’t at the required level today was when we had the ball, there were too many turnovers.

"I really believe in these players and how we play – we’ve won a lot of games, I know it was in a different league, but we need to believe.

"Of course we need to make more additions, keep going the team. We’re not looking too far ahead, we stick to the plan."

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to BBC Match of the Day: “It was a perfect start for us, despite going behind. We started well because we were leading the game but we conceded a goal but after this we continue to play and we continued to believe in what we are working on in the training sessions.

"I liked the game a lot for the result but especially the way in which the result was created - creating many chances to score, good possession, good high and medium pressure and we were good when we lost the ball and the intensity to try and get it back.

"I saw a lot of positive things, but we are only in the first game. Today we have seen summer work with my players.

“Dejan [Kulusevski] made a big impact but also last season. He and Rodrigo [Bentaceur] integrated really good with the squad. Dejan has continued in this way but he has to continue to work in this way with his behaviour and ambition. He has a lot of ambition - he wants to become one of the best players in his role. I think this ambition is good, if he is humble and works to continue to work he can do that."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Scott Parker, speaking to BBC Sport: "We understood the challenge we faced today. It was crucial we got a result. We brought passion, desire and energy, and we were well worthy of the result.

"My message to the players was to embrace the challenge. There are many more challenges coming but with that attitude, we have a chance."

On Kieffer Moore scoring in the Premier League: "He is a different option for us. He suffered with a big injury. We have worked tirelessly with him and he gives us an option. He is a mobile No 9, a big threat in and around the box. He was well worthy of his goal."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth's Kieffer Moore, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a great performance. To come away three points on the opening day of the season is all that we wanted. We wanted to physically impose ourselves and we did that. We want teams coming here to be almost scared of us. We executed game plan perfectly.

"It's amazing [to score in the Premier League]. I take each game step by step and never get ahead of myself. I am going to relish playing in the Premier League but I am not going to get ahead of myself."

Villa didn't look sharp today. They've got some great individuals and a top half finish is realistic for them. Top six is probably a little bit too much.

Steven Gerrard will get a tune out of these players at some stage.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth's former non-league striker Kieffer Moore on scoring in the Premier League: "This feels like everything I have been working for. I haven't done it on my own. I've had the support of my family and friends. I think everything is coming to fruition now. We have a very good team here and we have a great bond in the changing room and you can see that out there."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe:

"I'm feeling very positive after watching that – I thought the players were excellent from start to finish. It was a performance of real promise.

"I’m always going to push the players for more – I said at that half-time, we had produced a very positive performance until the last action. We need to be more ruthless as we know tough this league can be.

"It was missing the icing on the cake – Fabian brought that. When he was lining up to shoot I was questioning his decision but it was the right one. He’s capable of the unexpected.

"We’ve got a few weeks left to try to get the right player that will make a difference for us."

Tottenham Hotspur

"We were dominant with the ball but we didn’t score – but in the second half the quality showed.

"First game of the season, we weren’t clinical enough and they played with a back five so it was congested in there and we needed to be a bit more intricate.

"I back myself, I want to go the World Cup so it’s about hitting the ground running. I’m disappointed I didn’t score more.

"I’m confident in all the players and staff here, we had a good end to the season last year and started well today but we don’t want to get carried away."

Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to MOTD: "I felt like we had a tough start to the second half. Wolves were pushing, we had to hold on and dig in a bit. The second goal was in some ways a little against the run of play but we were gathering momentum. I was really pleased that the guys who came off the bench made a big difference for us.

"I actually thought we had a bright start to the match. The response to going a goal down was really good and I actually thought we could have had a few more before half time.

"I think all the debutants did quite well. The speed of play on the pitch was at a very high level, both teams trying to impose themselves on the way they wanted to play. In general I think the four players who started their first match for us are going to be good players.

On Aaronson: "He is relentless. He is none stop. His work rate is incredible I know him well and the thing I know about him is he is only going to get better."

On cross words exchanged with Bruno Lange after the final whistle: "It was nothing, really."

Leeds United

Leeds' Brenden Aaronson: "That was exactly what we were looking for!

"I can't stop smiling because this is such a wonderful place. The crowd push you on, that is why it is a legend here, Leeds United.

"Our plan was to go through the middle and I think we executed that well."

On the goal which went down as an own goal: "I think it came off me! I can remember touching it with my leg. We shall see, I hope they give me credit though.

"This is the way we wanted to start the season. Awesome."
