What a start for the hosts and it's a defensive disaster from Stoke.

Reading keeper Joe Lumley kicks a long ball down the pitch and Stoke get caught in all kinds of bother. Jack Bonham comes off his line to collect it and gets stuck in no man's land, while Aden Flint doesn't deal with Lucas Joao's run.

Joao quite easily puts the ball into the net. What a way to mark his 29th birthday, too.

Reading and Stoke weren't massive players in the transfer deadline day market on Thursday, but both teams did bring in one new addition to their sides, and by chance they both happened to be defenders who have come from Chelsea.

Baba Rahman has re-joined the Royals on a season-long loan, having made 29 starts for them last season in another loan spell.

The 28-year-old Ghana international has 44 caps for his country and will be looking for regular match-time in the run up to the World Cup this winter.

Alex Neil, meanwhile, made his first deal as Stoke manager by bringing in Dujon Sterling, also on a season-long loan from the Premier League club.

The 22-year-old spent last season with Blackpool on loan so is familiar with the Championship.

  5. Reading's home runpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 4 September 2022

What a different a few days make. At the start of the week Reading were sitting pretty at the top of the Championship having won four out of their first five league matches.

Then along came Sheffield United. Paul Ince's side were resoundingly and convincingly beaten 4-0 at Bramall Lane midweek, and Royals fans were bumped back down to earth.

The result was far from ideal but this has still been an excellent start for a team that was fighting relegation last season.

Another win today would be Reading's fourth in a row on home soil - their best run since October 2020 - and see them move back up to second.

Alex Neil's tenure as Stoke manager, meanwhile, began this week crucially by getting a point on the board, after a stoppage time goal earned them a draw at Swansea.

Neil, who left Sunderland last week to take the role, still has a task on his hands to get the Potters up and running this season.

Getting some consistency seems to be key for a team that have won two, drawn two and lost three so far.
