Sunshine, signings and speculation here at this newly named stadium. While the hosts have had a steady start to their season, today’s visitors have creaked and rocked from side to side.

Everton have endured their worst Premier League opening in over a decade, but did manage a Carabao Cup win in midweek.

That, alongside the addition of Neal Maupay from Brighton overnight, will help improve confidence. Though talk of losing the talented Anthony Gordon, will not.

Everton have been slightly unfortunate, they had a lot of opportunities against Nottingham Forest before the visitors took the lead at Goodison Park last Saturday.

Frank Lampard's side just lack that finishing touch, although Demarai Gray had a strong performance and scored against Forest

Brentford, I watched them in their 3-2 defeat against Fulham last weekend, but with home advantage I think they will edge this one 1-0.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

  3. 'Players are second guessing each other'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 27 August 2022

    Liverpool v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Neil Atkinson from the Anfield Wrap: "Jurgen Klopp has tried to tweak the way Liverpool are playing this season. It might be more than a tweak. If you think about some of Liverpool's performances and even moments during games, it does feel as though the players are second guessing each other. This machine, at their best over the past five years, it has been slick; people know where the movements are going to be.

"Against Manchester United, Liverpool's best players, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, were so wide, so far from the goal. Roberto Firmino was dropping in and it left this big hole in the middle of the pitch. That is a change the manager wants. He talked yesterday in his press conference about people going from out to in; you saw that in the Community Shield against Man City. Salah was very wide but he would manage to arrive into the box. That ebbed away against Fulham, Crystal Palace and Man Utd. There is a fluidity issue."

The Liverpool game took care of itself really, but good teams can go away on the road and grind out results and that's what they did today.

They'll be pleased because we're all talking in a slightly different manner now about Manchester United and it looks a little bit rosier than the start of the season.

So I'm sure Ten Hag is very happy.

    Anita Asante

I think Liverpool underestimated how important Sadio Mane was for this team, in possession and out of possession.

They miss the way he pressed the opposition in the final third to give Liverpool those chances going forward.

    It's a big loss.

    Liverpool

There is a long way to go in the Premier League season, but this is must-win for Liverpool in terms of they need to get their season going and kick-start it. It is win in any which way you can. It is that desperate for them, in some respects.

They lack creativity in the middle of the park and that has been a big problem. Darwin Nunez's sending off after the headbutt has set them back, they have lacked that physical presence and they certainly missed him against Manchester United, I think he would have made a difference.

Roberto Firmino has been a good player for them over the years, but they are missing something, they are missing their spark, they need to get it back and we are all thinking what a great opportunity at home to Bournemouth.

I watched Bournemouth get walloped by Manchester City the other week, but they were stubborn in the way they defended and really committed. Liverpool will want an early goal and I suspect they will win this one 3-0.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-0

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BT Sport: “I'm very proud of what the guys did today. They did a really good job from the first minute. We had good moments and chances, we really stretched them. We deserved more but sometimes football is like this.

“We had very good moments and a lot of good chances in the box. They had two shots on target in the second half. I felt we were always dangerous. Every set piece was dangerous and we were really stretching them, but the ball didn’t want to go in.

“I’m not scared with this team because they really fight for our targets and this is good to see.”

In today's programme notes, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to Olivia Pratt-Korbel, the nine-year-old girl who was murdered by a gunman in the city on Monday.

Klopp wrote: "Nine years old? How can this happen? How is it even possible? I cannot comprehend it and the more I think about it, the more difficult it becomes to understand.

"That is could happen in a city as special as this one where people look out for one another and stand together makes even less sense.

"I would like to pass on the sympathies of everyone at Liverpool Football Club to Olivia's family. They are in my thoughts and prayers and I know this will be the same for so many others as well."

PJ: A good win away from home and it was important that we built upon the victory against Liverpool in the last match to keep the team on a high!

Akorede: Exactly what Manchester United need. A follow up victory to that Liverpool game. Now get Antony and one more striker and then see where you are before the winter window.

Richard: From bottom of the league to only two points behind City. How things can change in a week.

Kevin: Good result for what was a difficult game. What is clear, is that we need a striker still.

Sulaimon: A clean sheet and another win for Manchester United and another reason for Harry Maguire to still be on the bench.

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalscorer Bruno Fernandes to BT Sport: "We knew it playing against Southampton, it is not easy. We have experienced that already. Sometimes you have to suffer. Every game is tough. Well done to us. Massive three points for us. Now we have to carry on.

"It's important because one win or two wins don't make the league. We have to carry on this sacrifice for the rest of the season. It is what this club demands. After Liverpool everyone could feel it. We set the standard so we have to carry on now and if we can, improve it.

"It was a great ball [for the goal], even great play from behind. Everything was perfect. Someone runs, someone gets the space behind. We did it well, so well done to everyone not just me.

"We did two or three seasons ago not losing from home but we want to win every game that's what it's about to play for Manchester United."

Crystal Palace have beaten Manchester City twice at Etihad Stadium in recent years, so they know how to win there, and there is the link with their manager Patrick Vieira, who used to play and coach at the club.

Palace are one of the most dangerous counter-attacking teams in the league, but you still cannot see past Manchester City.

It was really interesting the way Newcastle were brave and got at City and hurt them, but I expect City with home advantage to win this one, although I think Palace will score.

Manchester City played out a 3-3 draw against Barcelona in midweek at the Nou Camp.

And in his programme notes manager Pep Guardiola says the four-day break in the Spanish city was "great" for the group and a "really important" chance for him to be with his team socially and on the training pitch.

The match was organised to raise funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) awareness, in honour of former Barcelona player and coach Juan Carlos Unzue, who was diagnosed with the condition just over two years ago.

The Champions have scored nine goals in their opening three Premier League matches I'm not sure Crystal Palace fans will agree that City need more cohesion.

A huge win for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, backing up that victory over Liverpool. It was not the highest quality of performance, but three points and a clean sheet is most important from their point of view.

Southampton will be disappointed they couldn't take advantage of the chances they created. They'll think they should have taken at least a point.
