    Blackburn 0-0 Nottingham Forest

An early chance for Nottingham Forest as Brennan Johnson is too fast for Clinton Mola and it's saved by home keeper Aynsley Pears' legs when the pass to striker Taiwo Awoniyi may have been the better option for Johnson.

    Man Utd 0-0 Burnley

The first punch is landed by Ashley Barnes!

Burnley counter quickly as a pinpoint ping from keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell finds Johann Berg Gudmundsson on the left touchline.

His cross is met by Barnes, who gets a run in-between Casemiro and Lindelof, but the gnarly striker can't get enough contact on the ball to trouble Martin Dubravka.

    Confident start from the Clarets.

Nice work by Adam Lallana as he shapes to shoot with his right foot then drags it back onto his left before hitting a shot which clips the top of the Charlton crossbar and goes behind.

Casemiro is playing centre-half for Manchester United today.

    Ding ding! Let's go.

Breaking news... Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes is laughing and joking.

Sure we won't seen any more of those antics when the game starts.

Burnley already loves him like he will never know.

Safe to say Vincent Kompany is enjoying life back in the north-west of England.

After taking over as Burnley boss in the summer, the Belgian has changed their playing style with a more possession-based philosophy and the results have been magnificent.

Kompany's team are top of the Championship, three points clear of Sheffield United with half of the 46 games played, and have lost just once in their past 20 matches across all competitions.

But, speaking to Sky Sports just before kick-off, Kompany says he knows tonight's match will require a different approach.

"We love pressing as well when we don't have the ball," he smiled. "That sometimes gets forgotten."

Charlton are the first to go close at the Valley as Miles Leaburn, son of legendary Addicks striker Carl, stretches to reach Jack Payne's deep cross but he doesn't get a clean connection and his effort is comfortably gathered by Brighton keeper Jason Steele.

Manchester United pick up their quest to win a first trophy since 2017 with a warning from manager Erik ten Hag ringing in their ears.

United take on Burnley having ended the first part of the season by losing once in 12 matches - and winning nine - since that horrible defeat at Manchester City on 2 October.

But it is fair to say Ten Hag won't be letting his players rest on their laurels.

“I am happy with the way the players perform and the fact they play as a team with the right spirit and the right mentality," he said.

"But there is always a battle to keep that progress going. It means keeping the high standards.

"I always say, satisfaction makes you lazy. If you are too satisfied with yourself and the team, you will not maintain those high standards.

"It’s up to me to control that and set a good example."

I'm sure that Mr Infantino [Gianni Infantino, Fifa President] who's trying to start this Club World Cup is trying to see the back of competitions like this that every country has, but there's something magical about a cup competition.

It might not be the FA Cup but there's a magic to this - whether you want to bring through youth players like Arsene Wenger used it for all those years ago or you see it as an opportunity like Burnley, Aston Villa or Tottenham.

The top tiers of the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand are closed this evening as a consequence of the ambulance strikes.

Tickets had already been sold for the game, so Manchester United needed to rely on the goodwill of supporters to get the numbers down to the 62,000 that the capacity has been limited to.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper admits he is not sure how his side will fare when they return to competitive action.

Forest, who take on Blackburn in a fourth-round Carabao Cup tie at Ewood Park, climbed off the foot of the Premier League table by beating Crystal Palace 1-0 before the World Cup break.

Cooper’s side avoided being bottom at Christmas, but have since had mixed results in four friendly fixtures.

A 2-1 friendly defeat by Stoke earlier this month was followed by narrow 3-2 and 1-0 losses in Greece to Atromitos and Olympiacos respectively before they beat Valencia 2-1 away from home on Friday.

The Forest boss said: "It’s been a unique situation with the winter World Cup and going into the break. We’ve had a plan we’ve committed to, so let’s see down the line how we restart and look as a team what results we get and we’ll see from there.

"Some of the games we haven’t played well at all, but there are some things we’ve taken out of the games which we were looking for."

Man Utd v Burnley (20:00 GMT)

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

The noises coming out at the moment seem to speak of renewed confidence, togetherness, a desire to win silverware.

For such a huge club to go more than two years without a trophy is unexpected - 2017 was their last trophy.

This is something they can aim for. They won't win the Premier League this season but this is a competition they could win if they play well, attack the competition in the right manner and get a bit of luck.

  19. Addicks appoint Holden on eve of Cup tiepublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

    Charlton v Brighton (19:45 GMT)

Charlton Athletic sacked manager Ben Garner after just six months in charge earlier this month and their Supporters' Trust says it will petition owner Thomas Sandgaard to sell the Addicks if he does not agree to abide by a new club charter presented to him last week.

Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Bristol Rovers kept them 18th in League One and they have gone seven games without a win since beating Stevenage on penalties in the last round of the FA Cup.

But Dean Holden was named as their new manager on Tuesday and if the Addicks can pull off an upset tonight it would certainly lift spirits at the Valley.

Incidentally, caretaker manager Anthony Hayes will be in charge tonight before returning to his previous role as first-team coach.

  20. Scarpa scupperedpublished at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

Blackburn v Nottingham Forest (19:45 GMT)

Nottingham Forest signed an incredible 22 players in the summer as they looked to reinforce their squad after their promotion from the Championship and ensure they had enough quality for a Premier League season.

The transfer window hasn't even reopened yet, but that has not stopped Steve Cooper's men as earlier this month they signed one-time Brazil international midfielder Gustavo Scarpa on a free transfer from Palmerias.

The 28-year-old has played for Forest in their recent friendlies but won't feature tonight as he can't play in a competitive match until 1 January when the transfer window reopens.
