  2. 'Lots of positives to take'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, speaking to Sky Sports: "We didn't roll over, we were aggressive, we were on front foot, we created some chances. We look forward to our next game against Birmingham and that's our priority now.

"We're at the level where the players who sign for us we're trying to improve them. We hit the target five times out of ten, at United you have to hit the target nine times out of ten. We try to improve our players to six, seven, eight and then they move on.

"I thought United's goals were well-worked. But our defenders will learn. The ball from Fernandes was brilliant and the goal we conceded from Rashford there was a lot of quality from him.

"There are loads of positives for us to take. We didn't have to change everything all of a sudden because there is one of the top squads in the one of the world's best league in front of us.

"There is plenty we can use to improve on but if we can do this in this game we can be confident in other games to be on the front foot."

  3. 'There is no time to feel sorry for yourself'published at 22:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Burnley

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is receiving most of the plaudits for his performance tonight - particularly from television pundits Gary Neville and Sean Dyche.

Rashford, who scored United's second with a fine solo goal, was named as the player of the match and has been talking to Sky Sports.

On returning from England's disappointing World Cup quarter-final exit: "It is good to play again but it was a tough game and it was good to get a win to take into the next game.

"[The World Cup loss affects you] more emotions-wise because it was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out and you have to pick yourselves up.

"There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. You need to pick up results and thankfully we did that today.

"It was fun to be out there."

On his solo goal for United's second: "There is space in front of you and you're almost waiting for the right time to get a pass off but the gap opened and thankfully it went in."

On the team goal which ended in Christian Eriksen's opener: "I thought it was a great goal and the timing of the movements was fantastic. It almost looks like a simple goal but it was like clockwork.

On United aiming to win the EFL Cup: "Massively. We are in every tournament to try and win it. This is definitely a good one to win. Winning this trophy early in the season in February it can push you on to achieve more in the season."

  4. Ten Hag says players are hungry & offers short reply on Sanchopublished at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Burnley

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was difficult to get the press but we did and we need to take more benefit from that. There is still room for improvement but I am pleased with the win.

"The players are hungry after the World Cup break and it was great to see a team goal (for the first)."

On Marcus Rashford's performance: "He was great. I think he was a constant threat and playing on the backline and was dangerous with his dribbling and movement. He runs so much. Eventually you get the benefit."

On when his other World Cup players will return: "In Argentina the celebrations are still going on so we will see. The Premier League is ready for the restart and we will be ready for that."

On if there was any update on Jadon Sancho's return: "No."

On if there was any update on the club's ownership after the Glazers recently announced they were open to selling: "No. Don't ask me the question. I'm about the team."

On his EFL Cup ambitions: "We will have to see the draw but we want to win every game. We will prepare well for every game."

Marcus Rashford wasted no time readjusting to club matters after his World Cup campaign with England as he scored a fine solo goal in Manchester United's EFL Cup win over Burnley at Old Trafford.

Rashford was one of five United players on duty in Qatar to make manager Erik ten Hag's starting line-up.

And after one, Christian Eriksen, had put the hosts ahead just before the half hour with a fine first-time finish after Aaron Wan-Bissaka has provided his first goal assist since May 2021, Rashford took centre stage 12 minutes into the second period.

Given too much space as Burnley's defence backed off, Rashford started running 10 yards inside his own half and didn't stop until he had sprinted into the box, darted between Jack Cork and Jordan Beyer and driven his ninth goal of the season into the bottom corner.

It was enough to earn United only their second home win inside 90 minutes in this competition in five years.

League One Charlton stunned top-flight Brighton on penalties after a goalless draw to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Addicks defended well to keep their opposition at bay in normal time, with Brighton toothless in front of goal.

The Seagulls were dominant with 18 shots across the game but unable to convert their chances.

Charlton's win sees them become the only non-Premier League side to reach the last eight.

  7. Johnson inspires Forest into EFL Cup last eight - read the reportpublished at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2022

An inspired performance from Brennan Johnson helped Nottingham Forest overcome Blackburn at Ewood Park to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The forward put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot, but Blackburn equalised shortly before half-time through Scott Wharton.

Jesse Lingard's deflected free-kick restored Forest's advantage before a Taiwo Awoniyi strike made it three.

Johnson scored a second late on to complete an impressive display.

Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson made 11 changes from the team which beat Norwich City on Saturday, and the Championship promotion hunters - currently third in the second tier - struggled to contain Forest; and especially Johnson.

Plenty of empty seats at Old Trafford as we head deep into four minutes of stoppage time.

    Man Utd 2-0 Burnley

Bruno Fernandes is never too far away from getting narky and seems to have been wound up by Burnley's Connor Roberts.

Moments later the United captain lunges into a tackle and is shown a yellow card.

Erik ten Hag looks annoyed by that. Not surprising as it will now rule Fernandes out of the quarter-finals.

  20. goal

GOAL - Blackburn 1-4 Nottingham Forestpublished at 90 mins

    Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson started the goalscoring and he may well have finished it. He gets free and is just inside the box and it's such a clean, low strike and it gives Aynsley Pears no chance. Four for Forest.
