The linesman keeps his flag down but the referee overrules him and gives a corner. It doesn't come to anything.

Kieran Trippier should have been booked, it's a simple as that. It was a professional foul. The referee was right on top of it so there was no reason for him not to give a yellow card, especially when Marc Guehi got one earlier.

Dave: At some point Vieira is going to have to string some results together. His win percentage is currently 30. Roy Hodgson's was 33.3. Vieira was a beast of a player but I'm not convinced about him yet, managerially.

  9. 'Fans are realists'published at 17:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: West Ham 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard tells BBC Sport: "I didn't see that (fan protests). The fans support us and travel a long way for us. It was a strange game, we had a load of control possession wise but the killer instinct in their team was better than ours. In terms of the tactical control, we had a lot.

"It is a big job, I knew that when I took the job because we were looking at a relegation battle then. We had a big fight and stayed in the league. We lost Richarlison and now have tried to build around that so it is normal we are fighting again, when other clubs are trying to move on.

"I don't want to tell how Everton fans how to feel, my job its to give everything in the job here. We had a lot of possession, but were short in the final third.

"It is impossible for me to jump into the future, last season we were five points shy of safety with five or six games to go but as a club we have to move together. I cannot complain about the spirit of the players and how they approached the game. They may have passed it slow but we didn't find it in the final third.

"Fans are realists, they have watched the team over the last few year. History moves and nothing gives you the right to be in their league, we have seen huge football clubs go down. If you don't move you will hit tough times, we are in tough times and everyone has to try to move forward."

  11. 'One penalty incident so clear'published at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we deserved to win. We almost lost the game because the football is like this, but I think we played well. I saw the stats and it's incredible for us.

"Today, I want to speak for the referee because there was another clear penalty and I don't know the referee. They were able to give me the yellow card, which was right, but one penalty incident was so clear."

On Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson: "Mitoma scored a fantastic goal and Ferguson is an 18-year-old. I want to give him one more attention than other players. Danny Welbeck played a good game and I am sorry for the result because Leicester have never been dangerous.

"They found the first goal and we didn't wait at that moment. It's a downfall of our set-pieces. One mistake for us, but I think there was a corner before the corner of the Leicester goal. It's the same case for us, with Mitoma's situation."

  12. 'Really, really frustrated'published at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Southampton

Southampton manager Nathan Jones, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We had the best chance of the game with Adam Armstrong. We scored a goal that was overturned softly we feel. If we just defend set plays better, we showed naivety on the set play. Defensively we were good.

"Just really, really frustrated because I feel we deserved something from the game."

On the VAR decisions: "The referee was very picky today in terms of so many fouls, especially against us. We showed real naivety on the set play and that's the only way we're conceding at the minute"

On if he's seen improvements in his side: "We're in games all the time and we're a difficult side to beat. The only way we are conceding is either a counter-attack or set play. If we keep those out then we've got a good side.

"We need to be a bit braver, we need to show a bit more quality in possession, once we bring all of those together then we'll get more points. We have to defend our set plays."

On if there's no time to dwell on the loss with a packed schedule coming 1up: "We can't. That's the thing: we've got a semi-final, an FA Cup game, another semi-final then the league. It's a really packed schedule. The performance levels are there and we just need to keep turning those into productive results."

  15. 'Things could look very different in two weeks'published at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil, speaking to BBC: "“I think it was hard one; 1-0 up at home, creating some good chances on the counter. I'm just disappointed we didn't get the three points today because we probably deserved it.

"There was loads of good stuff, especially with a depleted squad at the moment. We're missing some massive players for us. We had some big chances. Probably deserved three but it could be a big point."

On Dango Ouattara: "A big positive was Dango, gave us pace and energy and a big threat that we've been missing."

On conceding the late equaliser: "I'm disappointed because when you have a lead that late in the game, you want to see it out and a slip costs us.

"But a big point, get some players back, some new additions and it’ll look different in two weeks’ time. We had some good moments, just a shame we couldn’t take more than one chance."

On Nottingham Forest: "When you're playing against a Nottingham Forest side that is in good form, they’ve had time to work together and they're a good outfit now.

"The boys deserve credit. The overriding feeling is disappointment that we couldn’t take all three points."

On possible new signings: "The club is working to the plan that it has done. We want to strengthen this window. When you're missing four key players, it becomes tough so two weeks of good work for everybody [on the training ground] and some new additions can make a difference."

    FT: Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we have to improve more. I think we can do better. We should do it because the way is going to be difficult and we are winning some matches but there's more in my mind I want to do. Each team in the Premier League they are very tough matches.

"A lot of teams are trying to sign players to improve and keep in the Premier League. We have only signed one player at the moment. We are, above all, giving our players the opportunity to show they've improved with us and then we can add some players to improve the squad and add a better balance to each position."

Joelinton flicks it on to Joe Willock with his backheel and he's away down the left again.

He's nudged by Cheick Doucoure but it's not a foul and in the end it puts Willock off as he runs it over the backline.

    He's already been a threat.

  20. 'It is a great club to be a part of'published at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: West Ham 2-0 Everton

    West Ham United

West Ham striker Danny Ings to Sky Sports: "I came on when we defending a lead. We knew we would have to suffer a bit in the second half but we worked hard and got over the line."

On what we can bring to the team: "Goals, I'm a striker, it's what I pride my work on, But days like today when you have a lead it is a different side of the game.

"When a team with this quality is down there in the table it is surprising for everyone. But the moment I came in I saw there is a great culture at the club and it is great to be a part of.

"It has been a crazy couple of days and I'll sleep well tonight. It is a massive club, finishing in the European spots the last two seasons is huge. It was an opportunity I couldn't say no to."
