Both Nottingham Forest and Wolves are battling for Premier League survival.

Forest boosted their chances by beating Southampton in their last Premier League game to move two points clear of the relegation zone but Wolves are second bottom, one point from safety.

Despite their league concerns, Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is relishing the prospect of reaching the semi-final of a cup competition.

He said: "We are excited of this possibility, but in the same way, we have a lot of matches in front of us and we are only thinking of the next match and we have to be ready to compete against a good team.

"We are going to try with all our strengths. We are going to try to do it."

Forest manager Steve Cooper just came out to acknowledge the home fans.

He got a warm round of applause back.

The backing from the stands for the Welshman helped keep him in a job earlier this season, when many predicted he was about to get the sack.

He has since taken Forest out of the Premier League's bottom three.

After a morale-boosting win over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup on Saturday, Nathan Jones is hoping Southampton's fans will get behind the team tonight.

"We need everyone pulling in the right direction," said Jones, who has faced criticism over recent form.

"I understand frustrations but they don’t help anyone. I would actually prefer them take it out on me than the team.

"We want to give them performances so that they can see progression and a group that works hard, with a structure to get behind.

"We have to be together. Managers get paid to handle pressure, frustrations, get through these times, put teams out to win games. I understand why people are frustrated but let’s be, one, realistic, and two, get behind the team because they need you over the next few weeks."

The former Luton boss knows it will be a tough ask against the Premier League champions, but doesn't feel his team are just there to make up the numbers.

"It’s a cup game, we don't want to keep the scoreline down, [or have] a respectable loss. In realistic terms it's not the end of world, but it's not what we’re looking at.

"We want to be aggressive, front-footed, continue our development. It’s a massive task, as Chelsea found out. They looked like they rested a lot of players and kept players back for this game.

"We know it will be tough, but a great test, a wonderful game - Man City at home in a quarter-final."

Following the sacking of Bruno Lage back in October, Wolves needed to get their next managerial appointment right as they looked to avoid being relegated to the Championship.

In came Julen Lopetgui and, so far, he looks to be doing the business with two wins, two draws and one defeat in his first five games in charge.

Add a place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup to that and he will be doing a fine job.

It hasn't taken Julen Lopetegui long to get his first taste of VAR frustration in England.

The Wolves boss was frustrated after his side had a potential winning goal by Toti Gomes ruled out for offside in their FA Cup third-round draw with Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend.

Lopetegui, who went into referee Andrew Madley's room with captain Ruben Neves after the game, said the offside "doesn't exist" and that it was a "pity" because his players "deserved to pass to the next round".

Wolves have written to the Football Association asking it to explain the circumstances surrounding Gomes' disallowed goal.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper wants to see a reaction from his side against Wolverhampton Wanderers tonight following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Blackpool.

Forest were thumped by the Championship side 4-1 at the weekend.

"We let ourselves down at the weekend," Cooper said. "I really hope we can respond and do better in this one."

Cooper made 11 changes for the Blackpool game but felt the quality he put out was still good enough to get the job done.

"I have to trust them that they don't let that happen again," he added.

"We move forward going into the next game and try to pick the right team to play the gameplan that's needed to be a success against Wolves."

Wolves went into the transfer window hoping to secure six new signings - not all of them starters - following manager Julen Lopetegui's arrival.

So far Matheus Cunha, on an initial loan from Atletico Madrid is the only addition to Lopetegui's squad.

He does like defensive pair Craig Dawson and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but so far, there has been no movement on either.

Lopetegui said yesterday he still expects more signings.

    Chris Sutton
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think a lot of Southampton fans have made their mind up on Nathan Jones. He needed that win at the weekend against Crystal Palace.

I don't think any of us fancy Southampton to win tonight but if they perform strongly and take the Manchester City scalp then he will be up and running and win some of the Southampton fans back.
