Newcastle United hold a slender advantage from the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg as Joelinton's goal gave them victory at Southampton.

The Brazilian made amends for missing an earlier easy opportunity when he arrived on the end of substitute Alexander Isak's perfect low cross to make the decisive contribution with 17 minutes left.

Newcastle will now be favourites to reach their first major Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999 as they attempt to end a trophy drought stretching back to the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win.

And if Newcastle do complete the job in the second leg on Tyneside they will owe a debt of gratitude to Nick Pope, who made two vital second-half saves from Southampton substitute Che Adams with the score still goalless, extending his remarkable personal record to 10 successive clean sheets.

Southampton, who had what they thought was an equaliser from Adam Armstrong disallowed for handball by VAR, saw their night of frustration complete when defender Duje Caleta-Car was sent off in the closing minutes for a second yellow card.

Joelinton was a central figure, seeing a first-half goal contentiously ruled out for handball then blazing over an open goal when it seemed easier to score, before hitting the target to make Eddie Howe's side firm favourites to reach Wembley.

The two sides meet at St James' Park in the second leg on Tuesday, 31 January.

Southampton boss Nathan Jones speaking to Sky Sports: "I am really proud of the level of performance. These are a top side, big physical and athletic. They have had time to recruit and recruited that way and they are a real tough side to play against.

"I thought we were excellent. They had a couple of big chances and we had a couple of big chances. For us to compete and be like we were it shows we have come a long way and in the second half we went after the game. We really stepped it up.

"We just lacked a little bit of quality in terms of wide areas, once we get that confidence and get one or two in we will be a different threat. I am really proud of them."

Elsewhere, in the FA Cup Accrington Stanley have seen off non-league Boreham Wood tonight and Accrington will now host Leeds in round four.

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Sky Sports: "Tough game, both sides had their moments and had chances to win the game, but we know it's only half time and there's a long way to go.

"We created chances today, we weren't clinical until the goal.

"It's been a good day but there's still a long way to go in the tie. I can't be critical in any way. We defended well, Nick made some big saves again.

"The two saves he made were big moments. Adams' one-on-one was at a huge time in the game when they were growing into it and the crowd were getting up but Nick stepped up and kept us in it.

"He's been outstanding for us this year, the defence has played very well in front of him but when called upon he's delivered for us.

"Pleased to win, that was our aim but we know 1-0 is delicate nothing is decided.

"We go back to St James' with our fans behind us."

There were 3,200 Newcastle fans there today - at a game on a Tuesday at the complete opposite end of the country on a freezing cold night in January.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope tells Sky Sports: "I let one in and VAR helped us out.

"We're happy with the defensive aspect of the game, we look solid at the back and the boys work hard to make it happen."

On Joelinton's goal: "Great finish, great team goal. It's never easy when you come into a two-legged semi-final but you always want to get ahead and win the first leg.

"Every footballer wants to be part of, big semi-finals and delivering for fans.

"It's something you dream of."

Newcastle United

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes tells Sky Sports: "We controlled the game but we missed big chances.

"It's just the first game now we need to think about the next one. I'm proud of the team today.

"One goal is important, we could score more but most important was to be one-goal in front of Southampton.

"I want to thank Nick Pope I think he's the best goalkeeper in the world.

"Let's keep it going."

That second half was very enjoyable after a very quiet first 45 minutes. But there's still 90 minutes to go in the tie.

Tens of thousands of Newcastle fans will be hoping next Tuesday is going to be a very, very special occasion at St James' Park.

The fans believe and that belief will only grow throughout the week.

I think a fair reflection of the game was a Newcastle win.

Southampton huffed and puffed in the early part of the second half but Newcastle's substitutions made all the difference.

Newcastle only need to avoid a home defeat against the side bottom of the Premier League next week to reach the Carabao Cup final.

Joelinton, who had missed a sitter, gets the only goal of the first leg, with the second leg at St James' Park next Tuesday.

Both sides had a goal ruled out because of a handball - Joelinton in the first half and Adam Armstrong for Southampton in the second.
