Newcastle well on top but we have to stop Ronnie Rosenthalling every chance.

    Adam, Alnwick

No Newcastle connection whatsoever but that Joelinton miss was painful to watch.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

This is a much, much improved second half. Ex-Newcastle man Adam Armstrong has a go for Southampton, but can't test Nick Pope.

    Proper cup tie now.

  8. 'What an opportunity'published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Newcastle will not get an easier chance to go ahead in this tie.

What an opportunity for Joelinton and he's in such good form.

It arrives at the back post, he lets it roll onto his left foot but he hits it high as Gavin Bazunu dives in desperation.

  9. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

It's all Newcastle. Miguel Almiron again causes problems on the right, Southampton can't clear it, it falls to Sven Botman at the back post but he can only hit the shot into the side netting when under pressure.

    Newcastle knocking on the door.

  10. WHAT A MISS!published at 53 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Joelinton...at the back post, unmarked on his left foot, seven yards out...

    No!

It had come from Miguel Almiron's cross but Joelinton can't produce the composure that was needed and gets it all wrong with the ball ending up way, way over the bar. Great chance that one. Missed.

    Awful, awful miss.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Sekou Mara goes for the spectacular when the ball bounces off Joelinton and the Saints man goes for an acrobatic overhead kick, but it has too much height and width on it and away it goes. Good effort though.

Would've been a great way to get the first goal of the semi-final.

As Longstaff got to that ball it rolled on the turf really invitingly.

He just has to keep it down and ask a question of Bazunu in the Southampton goal, but it's a rush of blood to the head as he puts it high into the fans.

  13. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle's Sean Longstaff has a chance, running on to the ball after excellent work from Miguel Almiron down the left flank, but Longstaff can't control the finish from the pullback, sending it well over the top.

We also asked if Nick Pope should have been sent off after that challenge on Moussa Djenepo, which ended the Saints' midfielder's match.

The majority of you say Pope should have seen red.

Re Ross Matthewman 20:53 - Pope is entitled to go for the ball and gets there first. His momentum carries him through and I'd ask you where is he meant to go? This is football, not Harry Potter - he can't just magically disappear

    Ben, frustrated Newcastle fan

Joelinton - Goal if it's given it's never being overturned - no angle shows it hitting his arm Pope - Maybe a free kick but happens everywhere with CB vs Striker and never an issue (not even goal scoring chance)

    Mike

Won the ball but out of control, red card Pope.

Erik ten Hag says he is determined to end Manchester United's longest trophy drought in 40 years as they prepare for Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Nottingham Forest.

The Red Devils have not won any silverware since beating Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final.

They last went six years without winning a trophy between 1977 and 1983 and United boss Ten Hag wants to bring back that winning feeling to the club.

"It's the best feeling," he said. "I had the luck in my career to win some trophies and it's magnificent, especially for the fans.

"It's so great and I think the fans here have some experience, especially the older ones. But now it is a period Manchester United didn't win trophies and it is too long ago. We are aware of that fact and we have to do everything to bring a trophy in."

The winners of both semi-finals (over two legs) will meet at the Wembley final on 26 February.

  20. Chelsea and Newcastle keen on Everton's Gordonpublished at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Chelsea and Newcastle are keen on signing Everton forward Anthony Gordon before next Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Both clubs tried to sign the 21-year-old in the summer but neither could agree a fee with the Toffees.

However, there is a belief Everton may be more open to a sale this month in order to generate funds for Frank Lampard's replacement as manager, although it is unlikely either would pay the £60m Everton would ideally want.

The situation is complicated as it is not known how long it will take Everton to name a new manager.

Nevertheless, it is expected both clubs will step up their efforts to sign Gordon, who was an unused substitute in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at West Ham, which proved to be Lampard's last game in charge.

It has been suggested Chelsea would be willing to loan Gordon back to Everton for the remainder of the season, although it is felt Newcastle are favourites to sign the England Under-21 international.
