Southampton are getting the ball to their main man Ward-Prowse, he's almost like the conductor in that midfield, picking passes out.

He's the threat.

James Ward-Prowse angles a ball into the box and it falls to debutant Carlos Alcaraz but Newcastle manage to close the danger quickly, deflect the shot and it comes to nothing, but a bit better from the hosts.

It was a good sliding block from Fabian Schar, he seems to be fully recovered from his earlier knock.

We have VAR in action in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Saints defender Mohammed Salisu may have been a bit nervous after a challenge on Sean Longstaff in the box, but it's well-timed and he got enough of the ball. Play on!

We haven't seen too much from Southampton yet, but James Ward-Prowse tries to spark them into life and sends it through to Mislav Orsic, but it is good covering from Sean Longstaff and the ball ends up back with away goalkeeper Nick Pope.

I don't know if it's hard because of the temperature but the ball isn't settling well and neither team can get any rhythm to their passing.

Almiron cuts inside from the right and it all opens up. Guimares' run takes the defenders away and then it falls to Willock on his left foot but it goes well into the stand. A first sighter for Newcastle.

It's been a very bright start from the visitors and Sean Longstaff gets free and sends in an inviting low cross but none of his team-mates are able to convert the opportunity.
