A reminder that away goals are no longer a factor in this competition. Not that we've come close to a goal from either side so far.

Newcastle United have looked the more threatening side, especially in the early stages, but it has all become a bit scrappy and subdued. Not much quality so far.

Gavin Bazunu is OK to carry on in the Southampton goal and we're back under way.

  4. Almiron 'looks a threat'published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Every time Almiron has the ball, he looks a real threat coming in off the right on his tasty left foot.

  5. Postpublished at 21 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

We've got another stoppage as Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has a nosebleed after colliding with Miguel Almiron, but the Paraguayan didn't do anything wrong, purely accidental.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle break down the right and the overlapping Kieran Trippier sends in a delivery full of pace, but it's just too high for Joe Willock's head.

  7. Ward-Prowse is the 'conductor'published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Southampton are getting the ball to their main man Ward-Prowse, he's almost like the conductor in that midfield, picking passes out.

    He's the threat.

  8. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

James Ward-Prowse angles a ball into the box and it falls to debutant Carlos Alcaraz but Newcastle manage to close the danger quickly, deflect the shot and it comes to nothing, but a bit better from the hosts.

It was a good sliding block from Fabian Schar, he seems to be fully recovered from his earlier knock.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

We have VAR in action in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Saints defender Mohammed Salisu may have been a bit nervous after a challenge on Sean Longstaff in the box, but it's well-timed and he got enough of the ball. Play on!

  10. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

We haven't seen too much from Southampton yet, but James Ward-Prowse tries to spark them into life and sends it through to Mislav Orsic, but it is good covering from Sean Longstaff and the ball ends up back with away goalkeeper Nick Pope.

  11. 'Pitch looks lively'published at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

    The pitch looks lively.

I don't know if it's hard because of the temperature but the ball isn't settling well and neither team can get any rhythm to their passing.

Fabian Schar is holding his thigh for Newcastle after a challenge from Sekou Mara, with Schar needing some treatment and Eddie Howe may well have to make an early change. One to watch.

  14. 'First sighter'published at 5 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    They broke really quickly.

Almiron cuts inside from the right and it all opens up. Guimares' run takes the defenders away and then it falls to Willock on his left foot but it goes well into the stand. A first sighter for Newcastle.

It's been a very bright start from the visitors and Sean Longstaff gets free and sends in an inviting low cross but none of his team-mates are able to convert the opportunity.

A very early chance for Newcastle and it falls to Joe Willock 20 yards out, but all he can do is sent his shot well over the bar.

Mark Taylor: Southampton's league form is still very suspect but they have had two brilliant cup results against Palace and City. Which team will turn up tonight?
