Summary

  • RESULT: Southampton 0-1 Newcastle - Joelinton scores only goal while Saints' Duje Caleta-Car is sent-off late on

  1. 'Newcastle look comfortable'published at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    HT: Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle look comfortable, they look strong and they've had a lot more possession and chances.

James Ward-Prowse is leading Southampton's press but the backline isn't following so Newcastle are getting time to play into the spaces.

  2. Should Nick Pope have been sent off?published at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no

He didn't even get a booking after coming out of his area to clear with a diving header, but Nick Pope promptly clattered into Moussa Djenepo, who had to go off injured.

Thumbs up if Nick Pope should have been sent off, thumbs down for no if you think the referee made the right decision.

  3. Should Joelinton's 'goal' have stood?published at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no

Joelinton thought he had scored, but it was wiped out for a handball.

But should the goal have stood?

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

Emma Gregory: How many very obviously wrong decisions are going to go against Newcastle this season?! VAR still not fit for purpose.

Ross Matthewman: That is a absolute straight red card for Pope. Reckless, out of control, and clearly endangering another player. If that’s done by an outfield player it would be a red.

HT: It's handball by Joelinton. Just look how he makes his arm rigid as the ball hit. Ref was right.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

This tie will be played over at least 180 minutes and the first 45 minutes of them have been very poor.

Very much goalless, although Newcastle fans thought their side had taken the lead when Joelinton put the ball in the net, but it was ruled out by on-pitch referee for Stuart Attwell for handball, with those in the VAR booth not seeing a reason to get him to review the incident.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 45+2 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Sadly, Moussa Djenepo is not able to carry on for Southampton after that collision with Nick Pope.

On comes Newcastle-born Adam Armstrong, who began his career with the Magpies.

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has to sprint out of his penalty area and produces a diving header to clear the danger, but he absolutely clatters into Moussa Djenepo and wipes him out.

The Saints man is in need of some medical treatment.

  9. 'Ugly but important'published at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was ugly but it was important from Pope.

Alcaraz gets it out of his feet, it dips just before it meets Pope, who dives down to his left and has to sweep it away from goal.

It's the closest Southampton have come and the loudest St Mary's has been tonight.

    A yellow card for Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters for delaying a free-kick.

It's getting better, but then again it had to. It's a first shot on target for Southampton. Carlos Alcaraz has a pop from 20 yards, it dips and bounces just in front of Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and he manages to shovel it away with both hands for a corner, which comes to nothing.

  12. 'It looked dubious'published at 20:42 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

That's not handball, that comes off his midriff. It looked dubious to me.

  13. DISALLOWED GOAL - Newcastlepublished at 39 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Joelinton has the ball in the net but referee Stuart Attwell instantly rules it out.

Joe Willock had a shot saved by Gavin Bazunu, Callum Wilson couldn't finish the second chance, the ball has bounced up, hits Joelinton, who then finishes.

But Attwell says it hit Joelinton's arm just before he finished into the net.

  14. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

A yellow card for 20-year-old debutant Carlos Alcaraz for fouling Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes.

Alcaraz says it was his first foul of the night, but he did have his arms wrapped around his opponent so gets no sympathy from the referee.

Two poor teams tonight so far. Newcastle have been great this season but with their lack of scoring recently they may well be fading a bit. Still defensively solid though.

For the second time tonight Newcastle's Joe Willock has a shot at go and once again it is ballooned well over the bar. Shooting practice for him tomorrow when his side get back to the north east.

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes may well be a bit lucky to not get a card after catching Sekou Mara with a flailing arm.

Caleta-Car was taking everything there, even if it meant missing the ball.

Unfortunately for the Southampton man, Almiron gets a toe on it, nicks it away, and takes the full force of that challenge.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 28 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

No shots on target, but we do have a booking - and it is for Southampton defender Duje Caleta-Car and he can't moan about that one as he was late on Miguel Almiron.
