    What was he doing?

All of a sudden Southampton seem to have imploded. They've lost their composure, they've lost their centre-half. It's stupid by Caleta-Car.

  6. Lyanco 'very lucky'published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Lyanco is a very lucky man.

It was a little bit of a flashpoint but as far as I was concerned Guimaraes was flat on his back and Lyanco stood over him and pounded him on his chest to shove him back onto the ground.

    It was a needless act.

Newcastle want Lyanco to have a red card, but the Saints man gets away with just a yellow. He challenges Bruno Guimaraes and then pushes down on the Newcastle man when he's lying on the floor.

Allan Saint-Maximin then talks himself into a booking for complaining.

Joelinton can do it on a crispy night in Hampshire! Howay the toon!

    Eliot from Basingstoke

Nearly 14 hours without conceding. Nick Pope isn’t human. Best signing so far for me. Trip a close second. Don’t know how Gareth can stick behind Jordan Pickford right now.

    Adam. Cheshire.

    On Southampton's disallowed goal...

It's a big call from VAR. It did strike his arm but it's so unlucky because he didn't know anything about it.

    On the Joelinton goal...

He missed a couple of chances earlier on but this time he makes no mistake.

Isak leaves Caleta-Car down the right, cuts into the box and puts a tantalising ball across for Joelinton, who smashes into the side netting.

The Newcastle fans are going wild.

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

Adam Armstrong was challenging for the ball along with Sven Botman, the VAR official says the ball hit Armstrong's arm just before the ball went in and the goal is ruled out.

That's both sides who have now had a goal disallowed for a handball following a VAR check.

  12. DISALLOWED GOAL - Southamptonpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Adam Armstrong's goal does not count. Newcastle still lead 1-0.

    Adam Armstrong

Against his old side, Adam Armstrong pounces and Newcastle's lead evaporates after only two minutes.

It is a scrappy goal, it takes a deflection. But the ball is in the net.

    BUT..

    Wait.

    We have a VAR check.

    Joelinton

Joelinton missed a glorious chance earlier in this half, but no-one will mind now as he scores to the delight of the Newcastle fans.

It's a brilliant move down the right wing and the low cross from Alexander Isak is perfect for Joelinton and this time he doesn't miss from close range and the visitors lead.

  15. Saints 'need to capitalise'published at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

At the moment Southampton are in control of this game and Nathan Jones will be a very happy manager, but they need to capitalise on this possession.

  16. Postpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Kieran Trippier sees yellow, striding in for challenge but Samuel Edozie is too fast, got their first and the England man gets a yellow card.

Sven Botman does well to head the James Ward-Prowse free-kick away for a corner and Nick Pope claims the follow-up corner.

Best chance of the night for Saints falls to Che Adams... ...with the inevitable outcome.

    Simon, Southampton

Ah Newcastle United, welcome back, we've missed you.

    Ken, Newcastle.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 68 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

It's now Newcastle's turn for a double attacking substitute with Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak coming on and off go Callum Wilson and Joe Willock.

    Great options to bring on.

  19. 'Southampton in the ascendancy'published at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Without a doubt the best chance of the evening.

It's great movement from Che Adams, he spins in behind Trippier and he's one-on-one with Pope, bearing down on goal but it's a great save with the left leg.

Southampton are definitely in the ascendancy.

  20. Postpublished at 68 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Che Adams shot is again saved by a diving Nick Pope, with Lyanco slicing the follow-up over.

That's twice in three minutes Pope has kept it goalless. It's a good save too, with James Ward-Prowse's free-kick from the right nodded down into Adams' path, he spins, shoots but sees it saved.
