Before the game you were fearful that it was going to be one of those dull, boring games where one team thought they have already won and the other thinking it was already over.

It hasn't been like that at all. There has been a great tempo to the match. Man Utd are playing like it is still 0-0 and they have to win the game.

Forest are playing with belief that they can get that first goal and put Man Utd under pressure, it's been a brilliant start to the game.

Luke Shaw tries to play a one-two with Alejandro Garnacho but Scott McKenna is alert and gets in front.

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams is watching tonight's game from the directors' box.

It did seem likely Williams would get a loan move for the second half of the season and he was linked with Fulham.

Nothing happened in the end so Williams must hope for a chance from Erik ten Hag.

Alternatively, there are quite a few European countries where the transfer window is still open, including Turkey, Croatia and Austria.

Alejandro Garnacho teases Willy Boly and Neco Williams and almost gets past them in the box before he goes to ground. There's a few faint appeals for a penalty but he was off balance more than anything. Antony then curls it but it's comfortable for goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Nottingham Forest have had a couple of dangerous attacks, yes Man United have defended them well but ten Hag will be wanting to limit them because it is very early in the game.

If Nottingham Forest get the first goal early then that's a bonus. I have to say, when the ball has come into the box, Man United have defended it brilliantly.

Bruno Fernandes spots Luke Shaw in space on the left and flicks it over the top with the outside of his boot.

Shaw's touch is poor though and it ricochets off him for a goal kick. The home fans chant Fernandes' name in recognition.

Encouraging signs for Forest as Gustavo Scarpa whips in another good cross from the left. Raphael Varane has to deal with it.

Luke Shaw fluffs his cross on the left and ends up skewing it way over the bar.

Forest go up the other end and Emmanuel Dennis cuts inside before he's pulled back by Wout Weghorst. He's started well considering he was called into the starting XI with around 15 minutes to go to kick-off!

Erik ten Hag is building something and there's nothing better than winning trophies to create that mindset and get that habit of winning.

An opportunity for Forest. They break quickly down the right but Neco Williams' dangerous cross is hooked away in the six-yard box.

Alejandro Garnacho has a bit of space to run with it but Willy Boly stands firm on the edge of the Forest box.

10 minutes gone already. Forest need to score four goals to win the tie outright as it stands...

Sam Surridge holds it up well against Raphael Varane to win a throw-in but Forest can't take advantage.

It is interesting Erik ten Hag has gone with such a strong side.

Manchester United have played a midweek game every week since the post-World Cup resumption and will do so for at least another four after this given the Europa League resumes this month with those two mouth-watering games against Barcelona.

He clearly wants to maintain winning form but he must also guard against fatigue and the games only get bigger from now on.

Antony has been busy in the opening stages too. Forest haven't had any of the ball yet.

Jesse Lingard missing the game also disrupts the preparation of Emmanuel Dennis.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is stepping into midfield almost as a number six off the back of Dennis.

It will be interesting to see how that develops and whether Wan-Bissaka continues to make those runs, whether Dennis spots that or whether Steve Cooper makes any sort of adjustment.

Will they be be happy to let that happen and see how it develops?

Casemiro brings down Gustavo Scarpa in the centre circle but United quickly get the ball back.

Forest have already dropped off a little.

The rain has started pouring it down within minutes of kick-off at Old Trafford as both teams struggle to keep it.
