This is a good opportunity for Nottingham Forest and it can almost free them up to put in a good performance.

They won't be judged really because people expect Man Utd to win and to win comfortably. But if Forest can go and start the game well then you never know.

"You can see it’s a club looking to really grow. It’s a big challenge for me and I made a clear decision to be part of the history here and grow with the club."

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports: "The position is good but there's still a game to go so it's 0-0 again. We need to focus on the process.

"Many factors are in there but I think we have a strong selection and a good team. We are bringing some players back but not too much. It's good to have Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial back.

"It's a first step. There is a long way to go but we need options to rotate and to keep the squad fresh."

On Casemiro starting in midfield: "I think this is the best solution and they can deal with many games. They are used to it so we are happy.

"It's about focusing on the game, making the next step and keeping those high demands and standards."

  8. 'It's an honour to represent Forest'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is backing his players to produce a "positive performance".

"It's an incredibly difficult task and it'd be wrong to say otherwise," he said.

"We won't be going into the game really disheartened, but instead have to treat it for what it is.

"This is a semi-final, a stage the club has not been at for a while. When you play for Nottingham Forest, it's an honour and a privilege and you have to represent that in the best way possible.

"We have to do our best to do ourselves, the club and the supporters justice and that is all we are thinking about."

Erik ten Hag has been talking to MUTV about Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial.

The pair are returning from recent absences, Sancho's dates back to October, Martial only a couple of weeks to the Manchester derby win against City on 14 January.

Ten Hag hopes to get a chance to put the pair on.

"For them this is the first step, now we hope they make further steps," he said.

"Hopefully we can bring them on but first it is about winning the game."

Manchester United's loan move for Bayern Munich's Marcel Sabitzer on transfer deadline day was one of the more surprising deals.

Why has the 28-year-old Austrian international been identified as the man to plug the gap at Old Trafford?

And can Bayern's fourth-choice midfielder flourish as Manchester United look to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League?

I think it's a really quick and astute reaction from Manchester United. I am a big Christian Eriksen fan, he's such a great player and is one of the only ones who links the build-up to attack.

He is a big miss for United but for them act so quickly and bring in Sabitzer on loan - he must have been somewhere on the radar with the club or Erik ten Hag before.

He is in Ten Hag's mould. He's a winner, he's a versatile midfield player. He can do all sorts of things. I think he is definitely a very, very clever signing.

Anon: Why are we starting Casemiro tonight? Surely we should use this opportunity to give him a rest? If we can't hold a 3-0 advantage without him we really are in trouble. I know ETH wants to win but we need to rotate the squad, we have eight games in February.

Nottingham Forest signed Jonjo Shelvey from Newcastle on a two-and-a-half year contract yesterday.

The midfielder bid farewell to the Magpies on the pitch at half-time of their Carabao Cup semi-final win over Southampton.

After spells with Charlton, Liverpool, Blackpool and Swansea, Shelvey signed for Newcastle in 2016 and went on to make more than 200 appearances for the club.

After signing for Forest, he said: "I spoke to Eddie Howe and he had such good words to say about Steve Cooper. I previously knew of him from my time at Liverpool, so I knew what a fantastic coach he was, but meeting him for the first time has been a breath of fresh air.

"He’s told me what he expects and the high standards he sets, so I can hope I can come and help the team push to stay in the Premier League.

"I’ve been in this league a long time, I know what it takes to stay up and what it takes to get a good team to gel, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working with the players that are here."

Manchester United have to show respect to Nottingham Forest and show that they mean business. It's not going to just be a stroll for them. Since the manager has come in he has shown his standards and he wants the players to met that and he has shown that tonight.

    No surprises for me.

Marcel Sabitzer believes he is at his peak following his loan move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich.

The Austrian midfielder, who was RB Leipzig's captain before joining Bayern in August 2021, arrives at Old Trafford until June 2023.

"Sometimes in life you have to make quick and important decisions. From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me," he said.

"I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve its aims this season.

"I feel that I am at my peak as a player, and that I can contribute a lot of experience and energy to the squad."

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

    Rene Meulensteen
Former Manchester United coach on BBC Radio 5 Live

For Nottingham Forest, it's all about maybe nicking the first goal. Stay in the game. Like Steve Cooper says, they are a team still improving. He's done incredibly well to get them to where they are in the table at the moment.

I think 3-0 is just a bit too much to ask but if they could get an early goal, build on that and maybe unsettle Manchester United then there is a slight chance. Where there is a chance, there is hope.

I can't see Man Utd slipping up at all and like ten Hag says, there's no room for error.

  20. Casemiro and Fred unitedpublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

With Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay injured and Marcel Sabitzer unavailable, Casemiro and Fred were Erik ten Hag's only senior midfield options tonight.

Even though Manchester United play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday before two games in five days against Leeds United, Ten Hag has gone with the Brazilian pair rather than hand Kobbie Mainoo a start.

    United are 3-0 up remember.
