Mark Taylor: Glad to see EtH hasn't taken anything for granted with his team selection. A Forest comeback is unlikely but if they get the first goal you never know. Well we do but you know what I mean.

  3. 'Anything is possible'published at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Jesse Lingard insists Nottingham Forest are not out of the semi-final against his former club.

Four-time cup winners Forest, who have failed to score three or more goals against Premier League opposition this season, will need to pull off an astonishing fightback if they are to keep their perfect record in the semi-finals of the competition alive.

They have progressed to the final on each of the six occasions that they have reached the last four of the League Cup.

Asked if they were out of the tie, Lingard said: "Definitely not. We have to have the belief factor about us, and the hunger to go and win.

"I think anything is possible. Of course they are a good team and are playing really well this season, but we have to find that belief."

The British transfer record was smashed on deadline day as an unprecedented January transfer window ended with Premier League clubs having spent £2.8bn during the 2022-23 season.

Chelsea's 121m euro (£107m) deal for Benfica's Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez takes the total expenditure by top-flight clubs in January to a record-breaking £815m.

More than £275m was spent on deadline day alone before the window closed for English clubs at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The deadline day outlay was an increase of 83% on the previous January record of £150m, set in 2018.

Manchester United will be without key midfielder Christian Eriksen until at least late April with an ankle injury sustained in Saturday's FA Cup win against Reading.

He was substituted after 57 minutes after he was caught by a tackle from Andy Carroll.

Carroll was later sent off after being booked for fouls on Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro.

"This tackle and the two tackles after, they don't belong on the football pitch," said United boss Erik ten Hag.

"Football has to set limits, restrictions, that you protect the players.

"I think what football wants is the best players being available on the pitch."

  6. How long will Henderson be out?published at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (20:00GMT)

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Nottingham Forest raised a few eyebrows when they confirmed late last night they had agreed a deal to sign three-time Champions League winner Kaylor Navas on loan from Paris St-Germain.

Navas is obviously vastly experienced and unlikely to have agreed such a move without believing he was going to play, once he is available.

That doesn't sound like good news for Dean Henderson, who has had a good season after arriving on loan from Manchester United.

Henderson is currently out for between four and six weeks with a muscle injury.

But there are whispers his absence might be longer term, which would explain the Navas decision.

  7. 'New signing Navas brings character'published at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

Keylor Navas is another "big name and big character" to arrive in the Premier League, says fellow goalkeeper Robert Green.

The three-time Champions League winner completed a loan move from Paris St-Germain to Nottingham Forest on deadline day.

"He brings masses of experience. He also brings a different flavour and a different goalkeeping technique that we have never seen before," said Green.

"You sometimes think: 'What on earth is he doing?' But he manages to keep the ball out of the goal.

"He's another big name, another big character and I'm sure he will come in and get some games."

  10. What's on the line?published at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

Well, simply, a place in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester United have not won a trophy since beating Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final.

Nottingham Forest last reached the final of the League Cup in 1992, losing to United at Wembley.

The last time Forest won a trophy was their League Cup victory over Oldham Athletic in 1990.

Tonight's winner will play Newcastle in the final on 26 February.

  11. Lewis O'Brien's uncertain futurepublished at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (20:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Lewis O'Brien came on as a substitute in the first-leg of the semi-final last week.

However, with Jonjo Shelvey arriving on a busy deadline day at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper told O'Brien he was free to find another club.

Blackburn agreed a loan, with an £8.8m obligation to buy if they get promoted this season.

    All looked good.

But the deal has still not been confirmed and there is no word from the EFL when it will be.

The presumption is the registration deadline was missed for some reason and Blackburn are appealing.

Marcus Rashford's sensational scoring streak continued at the City Ground in a 3-0 victory for Manchester United.

Rashford's brilliant solo effort gave United the advantage six minutes in and Wout Weghorst added a second just before the break.

Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the scoring a minute from time to provide Erik ten Hag's men with a healthy advantage.

The 3-0 lead puts United in a strong position at Old Trafford tonight as they look to get a step closer to ending a five-year trophy drought.
