A change of boots is required by Dwight McNeil. Looks like his first pair have split. If that was me, I'd be gutted. McNeil, though, probably has a garage full of 'em.

Chelsea have started with the bit between their teeth. It's not always been a happy place for them this season, but the Blues are enjoying a much better time of it of late.

  4. 'A very big point'published at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Brentford 1-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers to BBC MOTD: "It was a very big point, I think we've seen over the course of the season how Brentford have done, they've had a fantastic season.

"We've had to defend well from set-pieces and we're unfortunate with the goal from a deflection.

"When we needed that bit of quality we got it and it's a great goal from Barnes. He's a goalscorer, you get wingers who are more one-v-one guys and he can do that of course but his main skill is his goalscoring.

"I've said leading into the game that despite the results the performances have been okay but we've had costly moments in the games. Today we gave nothing too much away. We dug in and showed spirit and resilience. I was really pleased in that way.

"We can only do what we can which is to prepare well and train well and take that mentality into the games.

[On the international break] "The break didn't come at a good time for us before, it broke up our momentum. It hasn't been good for us since, that's the reality."

A bit if early danger from Chelsea. Ben Chilwell wins the ball high up and swings a cross towards Kai Havertz in the box but it is cleared. An Enzo Fernandez shot from range is then blocked.

Everton haven't won here in 27 games - the longest current streak of one Premier League team at another. The last time the Toffees won here in the league, Paul Rideout scored the only goal.

For Chelsea, the fact that they have been playing a bit better, scored a few goals, that was always the problem under Graham Potter, they have probably got their strongest team available under Potter right now.

Everton don't care where the points come from. If they could get a point right now, I think they would sprint away from Stamford Bridge if they could.

  11. 'It is a great moment'published at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Southampton 3-3 Tottenham

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ruben Selles speaking to BBC Sport: "It feels great. I'm very proud. I don't think we deserved to be 3-1 down but we showed character and the crowd helped us. Once we scored the second one we had all the energy.

"The foundation has been there, it's just another step in the process. We saw a team that wants to play with the ball, has a clear idea how to break the lines and score goals. The players want to fight for each other and I'm very proud of it."

On being forced into two early changes following injuries to both centre backs Armel Bella-Kotchap and Jan Bednarek: "That didn't happen in my life [before], losing both centre backs in the first half of the game."

On what the result means for his side: "You know the feeling when you go to the international break that you did something big. They showed character. We need to take all that we can. It is a great moment."

Everton winger Dwight McNeil's improvement under boss Sean Dyche hasn't gone unnoticed.

The 23-year-old struggled to find his form under former manager Frank Lampard after joining the club last summer from Burnley, but appears to finding his feet now that he is reunited with Dyche, who managed him at Turf Moor.

Dyche has been speaking about how he has helped get more from the 23-year-old: "He built a very good reputation and gets a move [to Everton] and it becomes a bigger feel. I think he's just got his shoulders back.

"We reminded him that, when he relaxes and works hard, he's a good player. The information given to him has been very, very simple. I think he's a player who's ready to improve and he is improving."

McNeil scored the winning goal against Brentford and Dyche hopes he can continue finding the net as part of a team-wide push for goals.

"I've spoken recently about the whole team being goalscorers, or having the mentality to score goals," said Dyche.

"That has definitely improved, the amount of bodies getting in the box but the intent, the body language. It started with the set-pieces, then you build that mentality into playing and that freedom - I call it the bliss to miss. Be in there to score.

"If Dwight can chip in, that's great, but I'm not just going to single out one player, it's about all the players."

  15. 'We pushed on and were punished'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil to Match of the Day: "The performance will be viewed worse because of the result, but at 1-0 we were right in the game and had created chances. We pushed on and were punished. It was not good enough today.

"The players will respond; they will be disappointed because we had situations where we should have done better. The game was right there for us; we weren't outclassed. It wasn't a 3-0 game and it slipped away."

On David Brooks' return: "I'm delighted for Brooksy, but disappointed he came back in a game we didn't get anything from but bigger picture is it s fantastic for him.

"He'll be ready to go again after the international break."

    • Chelsea are unbeaten in their past 27 Premier League home games against Everton (W15 D12) since a 1-0 loss in November 1994. Against no side have they ever had a longer unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge in their top-flight history.
    • 40% of Sean Dyche's Premier League victories (30/75) have been by a 1-0 scoreline, including all three of his wins as Everton manager. Of the 52 managers with at least 50 wins in the competition, only Tony Pulis (42%) has won a higher share by that exact score (41/98).
    • Kai Havertz is looking to score in three consecutive appearances for Chelsea in all competitions for the second time, previously doing so in March 2022. The German is the Blues' top scorer in all competitions this term (eight).
  17. 'I'm enjoying playing higher'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Bournemouth

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey to Match of the Day: "We controlled the game in the first half. I needed that goal for the confidence but the most important thing is the three points."

On his role in the team: "It is different under this boss; my role is to get forward, create chances and get goals and assists. I did that today.

"Me and Ollie Watkins have been working on the training ground. Everyone has had to adapt to the new gaffer's style; under Steven Gerrard I was playing deeper and now I'm higher up. I need to improve but I'm enjoying it."

On Villa's form: "Where the club wants to go, we need a strong finish. We need to improve our home form."

    Chelsea v Everton (17:30 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction:2-0

Chelsea seem to be finding a bit of form, at last. Wouldn't it be something if they won the Champions League under Graham Potter, after such a difficult start for him at Stamford Bridge?

First things first, though, they should take three points on Saturday.

Everton are another team who are decent at home but dreadful away. They have a really tough run-in, by the way, so their form on the road will have to improve at some point if they are going to stay out of the bottom three.

    Chris Ostler's prediction:2-0

Everton will give everything, but I can't see them stopping Chelsea.

  19. 'He has been a huge miss' - Potter welcomes Kante backpublished at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    Chelsea v Everton (17:30 GMT)

Graham Potter has spoken of his joy at welcoming N'Golo Kante back into contention for his Chelsea squad with the France midfielder possibly in line to play against Everton on Saturday.

Kante has not featured for the Blues since the 2-2 draw with Tottenham in August but would provide a huge boost to Chelsea's recovering season.

"Managers before me have spoken very highly of him because he is a top, top player," said Potter. "He has been a huge miss to us.

"That's not to say others have not given absolutely everything but N'Golo Kante is N'Golo Kante.

"Once he is at his highest level, he is a huge player for us."

At the same time, Potter is wary of pushing him into action too soon, particularly after such a long period out.

"We need to do the steps right to get him back up to speed," he said. "We want him to be the player that he is but in a responsible way, done as safely as we can.

"It's great to have him with us."

Graham Potter admits he has great respect for Sean Dyche as he prepares to lock horns with the Everton manager at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Toffees are just one point above the relegation zone but will face a Chelsea side revitalised in the last few weeks under Potter.

The Blues boss says he is "under no illusions" about the "tough" challenge they will face.

"Sean is a fantastic coach firstly," he said. "His record at Burnley and to do what he did there was a fantastic achievement.

"Now you can see the effect he has had at Everton. They are incredibly motivated and they have clarity in all phases of the pitch.

"We are looking forward to the challenge in front of our supporters and know we have to play well."
