  2. Nine teams, four pointspublished at 20:28 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

That point takes Everton to 26 in total for the campaign from 28 games. They and Southampton will be very pleased with their work this Saturday.

The big winners in today's bottom-half battle is Leeds, who moved up five places from 19th to 14th with their win at Wolves.

That relegation tussle is going to be consistently fascinating and dramatic all the way to the end of the season.

We started the day with nine teams separated by five points. Those same nine from 12 to 20 are now separated by four points.

Meanwhile, the top 12 clubs in the division are separated by 39 points.

  3. 'A bloody-minded performance'published at 20:24 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It’s pleasing, points on the road are hard to come by in the Premier League. We’ve opened up with the players about the mentality to take on games and how to do that tactically.

"First half was more of a defensive mentality. Second half we found a better balance. We conceded but it is the reaction to the goals conceded. That is getting better all the time."

On Ellis Simms: "Ellis Simms, a young player coming on and earning his spurs. We know he’s got power and pace, then a fine finish under the keeper.

"I’m really pleased for him. He spoke to me last week, I told him to tell me where he needs to get better. He told me four things and I said ‘you’re right’ – one of them was playing stronger and he did that today."

On building belief away from home: "We probably just about deserved a point, they had chances as they will here but we created a few ourselves.

"Our intent to score a goal away from home is improving and I’m pleased with that.

"I said at half-time, the will to defend is good but you’ve got to try to play. That improved but there is still a way to go."

On the relegation battle: "It continues a good run of performances and the consistency of performances is really important. We were a mistake away from winning at Nottingham Forest and I felt we played well and should have won.

"A very, very clear and bloody-minded performance and I’m pleased with that."

  5. 'Sour feeling when you don't get three points'published at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter speaking to Match of the Day: "We did a lot well and we are disappointed with the goals we conceded tonight. We thought we played well enough to get the three points but ultimately if you don't defend well, you don't get the result.

"We lost duels in the box and when you lose the duels, there is danger. Credit to Everton, they are good at that but we have to do better. It's disappointing. There were a lot of good things about the performance but we have just taken one point.

"We were attacking and then they broke through. we had to defend the set pieces and not allow ourselves to be open in big spaces but we did that.

"Joao Felix was lively throughout, Kai [Havertz] and Christian Pulisic were good, good width from Ben [Chilwell] and Reece [James]. Enzo and Kovacic in midfield drove the game as well.

"Really disappointed because we wanted to win.

"[Wesley] Fofana was fantastic, defended well, drove the game but he had to come off with fatigue with his hamstring. He took responsibility. Lots of positives from the performance as a team and individually but there is a sour feeling when you don't get the three points.

"Kante is there on the bench and he is ready. It was a difficult one to come into for his first game, he has been away for so long but he's ready."

Ellis Simms scored his first ever Premier League goal for Everton. The Toffees have now had 13 different goalscorers in the competition this season, with only Arsenal, Chelsea and Leeds (14 each) having more.

  7. 'Pleased with growing mentality'published at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports: “I’m really pleased with the growing mentality. There’s been a lot made of their away form over the last couple of years and it’s tough coming to a place like this, even if they’re having an up and down time.

"We showed them a little bit too much respect in the first half but came back well in the second half."

On Ellis Simms: “We threw him in against Liverpool and struggled a little bit but he’s maturing into it. We just felt with his pace and his power – he’s delivered it to break free today - and then a nice finish under the keeper.

"A lot has been made of the goal scoring and lacking strikers but I’ve said all along that it’s a team mentality.

"The intent to score a goal has been improving all the time. Second half we started asking more questions from set pieces. We had really good intent to be in the game, create chances and try and win the game.

"People who change things, make things happen. They was no disappointment when we went a goal down."

On Chelsea's penalty: "It’s a bit clumsy but it’s a tight one for me. But it got given. The ref did give it a go, he did his best for them trying to get the corner in with a millisecond left."

On battle to stay up: "It takes wins, it takes performances. We’re working on the performance and the consistency of performance. We can’t effect everyone else. We need not to overthink everyone else.

"There is certainly talent here. With this group we’re laying down a base to work from. We’re trying to give them the freedom to play. The attitude to defend was good first half but I said at half-time that we’ve got to go and play. They did that better in the second half."

  8. Everton's not so secret weaponpublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

Four of Everton's seven Premier League goals under Sean Dyche have come from set piece situations (2x corner, 1x free kick, 1x penalty). Since his first game in charge, only Arsenal and Brentford (5 each) have scored more such goals.

  9. Feels like a win...published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

Everton are winless in each of their last 28 Premier League away games versus Chelsea (W0-D13-L15). It is the longest Premier League away winless run by any club against a single opponent, surpassing the 27 by Newcastle United at Liverpool (1995-running).

However, that is definitely not the takeaway for the Toffees tonight. They've secured a point with a big performance.

  10. 'We have been showing character in recent weeks'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton defender James Tarkowski speaking to Sky Sports: "Unbelievable goal from Simms, he went past [Kalidou] Koulibaly, who is no slow player, and shrugged him off to score. He has been working hard, since Christmas, got his head down and those are the moments you live for.

"It's massive. We have been showing character for the last few weeks, had a couple of bad results against Arsenal and Liverpool but we have been grinding it out and we worked hard today to get a point which was brilliant.

"Never nice giving away penalties, Ben [Godfrey] thought I was going to clear it and he thought that I was going to clear it. Reece [James] went down and we gave away the penalty.

"We take it game by game, the next game is Spurs at home at our place which is a difficult place to come and we look forward to that.

"Not trying to focus too much on other teams, we focus on ourselves and if we put the points on the board, we don't have to worry about anyone else."

  11. 'This gives us massive relief'published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton striker Ellis Simms, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's about patience, I just had to wait for my chance. We've got top players so I'm not going to walk straight into the team, I have to work hard and take my chance when I get it.

"It's massive belief, we're working hard in training, staying united and sticking together when it gets tough. We went behind today but fought back to get the equaliser."

  12. 'Fantastic point for Everton'published at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Everton

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

At this point in the season, with what's happening in the league right now, it's gigantic for Everton. To be behind twice, away from home against a very good team, they wouldn't let go. They adapted.

People can say what they like about Sean Dyche, his tactics might be simplistic sometimes. When he had to change, he did change it. Simms has quality and he just has to put it together.

Boy did he do that to get the point for Everton, fantastic for him and a great point for Everton.

It is becoming quite a familiar story for Chelsea. They will feel they had more than enough of this game to win it. But they didn't have enough of an edge at times, nor enough control when they had to see it out.
