    Reading 0-0 Burnley

The title-winning champagne might have stayed on the Burnley bus after Sheffield United's win earlier this afternoon, but the Clarets will certainly be buoyant down in Royal Berkshire this afternoon.

They've not lost in 20 Championship games, and they've already created a chance to test a struggling Reading side desperate for points under caretaker boss Noel Hunt.

Charlie Taylor whipped the ball in looking for Scott Twine, but the former MK Dons man was just unable to stretch to meet it.

There have been a few early goals outside the Championship.

Jordan Roberts has put League Two play-off hopefuls Stevenage ahead against AFC Wimbledon.

It took only two minutes for Rod McDonald to put Crewe ahead against Walsall.

In League One, David McGoldrick's 22nd goal of the season has put Derby ahead at Bristol Rovers.

Preston are the side in form here and they were almost in front inside the opening minute.

Crucial goal for Blackpool down at the bottom of the Championship, as top-scorer Jerry Yates picks up his 14th goal of the season.

He crept beyond the Wigan offside trap to meet Keshi Anderson's through ball and fired it beyond Ben Amos.

Might be too little too late in this six-pointer between two strugglers, but an important goal.

All 24 teams are in action this afternoon, with leaders Leyton Orient closing in on promotion to League Two.

It is reaching a now-or-never stage for a number of other sides as they desperately try to clamber into the top six.

Sunderland begin the day in 10th, four points off the play-offs. They entertain Birmingham at the Stadium of Light, but they have only won six times at home all season with their best work being done on the road.

West Brom are one place below the Black Cats and five points adrift, albeit with a game in hand on most of their play-off rivals.

They head to Stoke in need of three points but form is against them. They have collected three points from four games and have picked up just one point from their last six on the road.

For Watford, they have mathematical hopes of the play-offs with a six-point gap to make up from 12th, but they have only picked up one win from six games under Chris Wilder.

The Hornets even had to quash speculation this week about Wilder's future, so Vicarage Road is not a happy place as they prepare to welcome Bristol City.

At the other end of the table, 11 points from five games has helped Huddersfield climb out of the bottom three.

Neil Warnock looks set to pull off another relegation escape, but he will be ramming home the message of not letting up to his players ahead of their game at Swansea.

  10. Will Hoops build on Easter Monday fightback?published at 14:48 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    QPR v Coventry (15:00 BST)

Going 2-0 down after 13 minutes at West Brom on Easter Monday appeared to have set QPR on their way to a seventh defeat in eight games under Gareth Ainsworth.

But from nowhere, the Hoops conjured goals from Lyndon Dykes and Chris Martin to salvage an unlikely point.

Ainsworth must hope that show of fighting spirit can carry on at Loftus Road with Coventry the visitors.

It may feel like clutching at straws but the new Hoops boss must use whatever he can given that QPR have taken just 13 points from a possible 75 - relegation form, pure and simple.

The Sky Blues will be no pushovers, either. Mark Robins' side are three points off the top six and still with genuine ambitions of a play-off spot.

    Millwall v Preston (15:00 BST)

Anyone getting Millwall or Preston in the Championship sweepstake at the start of the campaign could have been forgiven for letting out a groan.

Millwall have been in the division for six seasons and Preston eight, with neither troubling the play-off spots.

That could be about to change. The Lions are fifth, but level on points with both sixth-placed Blackburn and North End in seventh.

Millwall have hit a sticky patch, though, with two points and no goals in their last four. They remain in the top six but clubs are bunching behind them.

It's allowed Preston to creep right into contention with five wins from six, albeit with a generous run of fixtures.

The Den will be loud and raucous, and both sides know that three points would keep their unlikely Premier League dream alive.

  12. Millers and Hatters determined to stay on successful coursepublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Rotherham v Luton (15:00 BST)

Luton celebrating a goal against local rivals WatfordImage source, Rex Features

If the season ended right now, Rotherham and Luton would have to take it as a big success.

Rotherham are four points clear of the bottom three, and shedding their yo-yo status of going up and down over the last six seasons would be a huge achievement.

Luton's ambitions are even loftier. Despite slipping to fourth following Middlesbrough's win last night, they could still somehow catch Sheffield United for second.

But Rob Edwards' team remain on course for their highest league finish since they were in the old Division One in 1992.

The Hatters continue to defy the odds and there is a very real possibility that Arsenal, Manchester City and the rest could be on their way to Kenilworth Road next season.

  13. Caretaker must hit ground running against champions-electpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Reading v Burnley (15:00 BST)

Reading interim manager Noel HuntImage source, Rex Features

The Championship managerial merry go-round claimed another victim on Tuesday when Reading manager Paul Ince was relieved of his duties.

This year has not been kind to the Royals with just two wins in 16 games which, allied to their six-point deduction for breaching financial rules, has them in the final relegation spot.

While, with Andy Carroll arguing with supporters at the end of their 1-1 draw with Birmingham on Good Friday, the atmosphere is not good around the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Interim manager Noel Hunt has been handed the task of leading them in the last five games and their former striker, part of the 2012 Championship-winning squad, has a difficult first task.

Burnley have won promotion and are rapidly closing in on the title, so the hosts can expect few favours.

But they still have to play promotion-chasing Luton and Coventry as well as relegation rivals Wigan and Huddersfield to come, so Hunt has no time to ease himself into the role.

  14. Not an afternoon to be by the seasidepublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Blackpool v Wigan (15:00 BST)

Nowhere are the stakes higher in the Championship this afternoon than at Bloomfield Road.

The division's bottom two sides, Blackpool and Wigan face off on an afternoon of no return.

With the Seasiders seven points from safety and the Latics, eight, relegation would not be confirmed with defeat, but it would be as good as settled for the losers.

The winners will still face an almighty task to survive, while even a draw would not be any good for either team.

Wigan are bottom after they were deducted three points for failing to pay their players' wages on time.

But they can look to history and find an omen. On almost this same date in 2011, they went to Blackpool bottom of the Premier League and won 3-1.

It began a run of 11 points from their final six games to cap one of those great escapes under Roberto Martinez.

They probably need even more points from fewer games to pull off a similar feat.

    FT: Sheff Utd 4-1 Cardiff

Cardiff boss Sabri Lamouchi questioned his sides attitude after their defeat by Sunderland last time out, and while he has a few errors to rue today they did push high-flyers Sheffield United.

Mathematically they could slip into the relegation places today, but that would take a win for Reading against already-promoted Burnley to happen.

    Sheff Utd 4-1 Cardiff

Promotion-chasing Sheffield United come away with a huge three points against relegation-threatened Cardiff City.

Victory moves the second-placed Blades eight points clear of those teams chasing the automatic-promotion spot they currently occupy.

With only fives games remaining, that is handy cushion to have.

    Sheff Utd 4-1 Cardiff

Those two late goals could be a very cruel blow for Cardiff today.

Only the woodwork denied them an equaliser before Iliman Ndiaye made it 3-1 after 80 minutes. They were well up for the fight, no doubt.

  19. Big win for Cambridge Unitedpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Cambridge United 2-0 Peterborough

Cambridge United pick up a crucial three points with victory over their local rivals Peterborough in League One.

Goals from Harrison Dunk and Sam Smith take them level on points with 20th-placed Oxford United, but they're still in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Peterborough could find themselves out of the play-off places later this afternoon if Bolton and Derby both win.

    Sheff Utd 4-1 Cardiff

The fourth official holds up his board and shows there will be four minutes of added time.

Sheffield United have themselves an eight-point cushion to third place, while this defeat leaves Cardiff just one place and a point above the relegation spots.
