    England captain Leah Williamson joins an ever-expanding list of top women footballers to suffer an ACL injury which includes Arsenal team-mate Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema and Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas.

    The cause of Williamson's injury, suffered during Arsenal's defeat this week at Manchester United, is not yet clear.

    But, once again, there are renewed calls from players, fans and managers for more research into why this type of injury is more prevalent in female footballers than male.

    England striker Chloe Kelly has said the "fear" and "negativity" around ACL injuries "needs changing".

    Arsenal and England captain Leah Williamson is set to miss this summer's World Cup and the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

    Williamson went down in the first half of Arsenal's 1-0 Women's Super League loss to Manchester United on Wednesday.

    "Leah is set for an extended spell on the sidelines," Arsenal said in a statement on Friday.

    England's opening World Cup match with Haiti takes place on 22 July.

    Arsenal statement: We can confirm that Leah Williamson suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our Barclays Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

    Leah was substituted in the first half of the game at Leigh Sports Village and underwent further assessment on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.

    Leah will now begin a period of rehabilitation and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. She will undergo surgery in due course.

    Everyone at Arsenal will be supporting Leah closely throughout the journey ahead and we would ask that her privacy is respected at this time.
