Former Premier League forward Clinton Morrison is backing West Ham to go all the way and win the Europa Conference League.

Morrison says the Hammers' quarter-final win over Gent will give team confidence heading into the latter stages of the competition, as well as in their remaining Premier League fixtures.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily, he said: "It's a confidence-booster.

"They have a hard game against Bournemouth after that fantastic game against Arsenal.

At 2-0, we thought this game was over, but they have their never-say-die attitude.

"Some West Ham fans moan at me sometimes on social media about why I’m always talking about Moyes staying. I just think he is the most experienced man at the moment.

"I think they can win the Europa Conference League, be playing Europa League football next season and I think they will be safe.

"Michail Antonio scoring two goals gives you confidence and hopefully he can replicate that in the league. I think West Ham will be flying and I think they will win a trophy at the end of the season."

How often, when players do something extraordinary, do we hear from managers that they do that every day in training?

Declan Rice is held in high regard by West Ham and England fans already, while he is coveted by pretty much every top manager in the Premier League.

So his worth is not in doubt - but scoring wonder goals is not normally classed as one of the defensive midfielder's biggest strengths.

    Well maybe it should be...

"If anybody didn't think he could do that, they are completely naïve and don't watch us close enough," Moyes said.

"He is some player. That is why we value him so highly. It was a Roy of the Rovers-type goal.

"He has so many parts to his game, he doesn't always show them. He has a good personality but he could show it even more.

"His experiences with England have been huge. I can see him when he comes back, he has grown quicker and bigger, getting a chance to work alongside the quality of players they have got, and a great coaching staff, will do Declan the world of good."

It was a goal that will live long in the memory of everyone at London Stadium.

Declan Rice won the ball in the West Ham half before exchanging passes with Lucas Paqueta, running half the length of the pitch and sending a low shot into the bottom corner past Gent goalkeeper Davy Roef.

The midfielder's moment of brilliance put the Hammers 3-1 up on the night in their Europa Conference League quarter-final to ease all nerves after a disastrous start saw the visitors take a shock lead.

West Ham ultimately cruised into the semi-final 5-2 on aggregate, setting up a last-four tie against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and leaving the home fans celebrating reaching a European semi-final for the fifth time in their history.

Rice's contribution is bound to trigger more speculation about the future of the 24-year-old, who, despite being under contract for another season, has been heavily linked with Arsenal.

West Ham's story this season triggered our debate this morning on the football fan's journey from despair to delight and back again.

They have gone from a relegation dogfight to European success this week and return to the grind with a trip to improving Bournemouth on Sunday.

We will be hearing from manager David Moyes on that subject later.

But first, shall we relive Declan Rice's wonder goal against Gent? Why not...

The Europa Conference League is very much the poor relation when it comes to UEFA club competitions.

However, West Ham could be in line for a handy windfall it they end up winning the competition in Prague.

Because they won all their group matches and have now progressed through two knockout rounds, the Hammers have earned 7.6m euros in prize money alone.

There is 5m euros to the winner and with various payments through the TV pool, it is estimated West Ham will earn around 21m euros (£18.5m) if they eventually lift the trophy.

For me it has to be Reiss Nelson's 96th winner vs Bournemouth last month. I've been going to the Arsenal for 20 years now and that was the loudest and wildest it's ever been. Seconds earlier we were in despair about bottling 3 points, and maybe even the title. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be meaningless and we throw away the league.

AFC Bournemouth, April 2009. 17 point deduction at the start of the season. One defeat away from relegation from the League and likely bankruptcy and closure. Losing 0-1 to Grimsby and all was dark. Led by Howe and Steve Fletcher the team turn it round and win 2-1. Saved. May 2015, a win at Charlton sees promotion to the Premier League. Victories against West Ham, Chelsea and Man Utd follow. No story like it.

We have been asking for your views this morning as a football fan when you have gone from the pits of despair to unexpected delight.

Juve supporters must be experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions at the moment.

Here are some more of your own experiences...

  9. Who are the individuals involved?published at 09:27 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Andrea AgnelliImage source, Getty Images

Agnelli and the rest of the club's board, including former midfielder Nedved, stepped down in November while the investigation was taking place.

At the time, a statement said the resignations were "considered to be in the best social interest to recommend that Juventus equip itself with a new board of directors to address these issues".

The chairman had presided over the club for 13 years, during which time Juventus won nine successive Serie A titles and reached two Champions League finals.

But last year they made a £220m loss - a record for an Italian club.

Agnelli and Arrivabene were banned from Italian football for two years, with Nedved receiving an eight-month suspension.

Cherubini and Paratici were suspended domestically for 16 months and two and a half years respectively.

Paratici left the club to become managing director at Tottenham before January's ruling but his suspension was extended worldwide by Fifa in March - a decision the 50-year-old is also appealing against.

Juventus are also facing an investigation from Uefa over potential breaches of its club licensing and financial fair play regulations, which was announced last month.

The Old Lady were handed a points deduction after an investigation into the club's past transfer dealings spanning two years from 2019 to 2021 by Italian football's governing body (FIGC).

Juventus were accused of fixing their balance sheets by artificial gains of around 60m euros from club transfers, charges they were found guilty of by the FIGC's appeals court in January.

The club, however, denied any wrongdoing and took their case to a tribunal at the Olympic Committee, Italy's highest sporting court.

The tribunal did not rule on the merits of the case but instead examined the legal legitimacy of the punishments handed out by the FIGC to the club and directors.

Juventus were among several Serie A clubs acquitted of suspect transfer activity by an FIGC appeals court trial last year but the investigation into the club was reopened due to new evidence from a separate criminal probe into their finances.

The 15-point sanction was tougher than the nine-point deduction prosecutors had requested.

  11. Juve back in UCL huntpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Fabio ParaticiImage source, Getty Images

Like Paratici, former president Andrea Agnelli, ex-chief executive Maurizio Arrivabene and sports director Federico Cherubini had their appeals rejected.

Former player and director Pavel Nedved, Paolo Garimberti and Enrico Vellano were successful with their appeals.

Rather than the club being cleared, Juve's case will now return to the Italian Football Federation appeals court, the body which gave the initial punishment.

With eight games to go in the season, AC Milan have been knocked out of the Champions League places by Juve while Roma drop to fourth.

Juventus chief football officer Francesco Calvo welcomed the decision, saying it provided certainty to the Turin club and the other sides battling to finish in the top four.

"As of today, we finally have certainty and we expect that the points that have been given back to us will remain with us forever," he added.

  12. Juventus' 15-point penalty for illicit transfer activity reversedpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Juventus' 15-point penalty over transfer dealings has been reversed, with Italy's highest sporting court ordering the case to be re-examined.

Juve were punished in January after being found guilty of false accounting.

The club have now moved from seventh to third in Serie A, but could still be punished at a later date when a new hearing is held.

Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici lost his appeal against a 30-month ban as part of the same case.

The former Juve sporting director was one of 11 directors at the club, either former or still in place at the time of the ruling, who were sanctioned.

He stepped back from his role Spurs when his ban was increased to be worldwide, at the same time as the north London club began searching for a replacement for former manager Antonio Conte.

  13. ICYMI - Paratici resigns as Tottenham's managing director of footballpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Fabio Paratici has resigned as Tottenham Hotspur's managing director of football with immediate effect.

The move follows Paratici losing his appeal against a 30-month ban from Italian football, which was extended "to have worldwide effect" by Fifa.

Paratici was banned after Juventus, where he was sporting director and managing director before joining Spurs, were found guilty of false accounting.

Juventus' 15-point penalty was reversed with the case to be re-examined.

However, Paratici had his appeal against his ban rejected.

A Spurs statement said: "Fifa ruled to extend the ban worldwide and, whilst there continues to be a dispute as to the scope and extent of the ban, the current worldwide ban prevents Fabio from fulfilling his duties as our managing director of football.

"Fabio has consequently taken the decision to resign from his position at the club with immediate effect to focus on his legal position in respect of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) and Fifa rulings."

Whatever talks between David de Gea and Manchester United may be going on behind the scenes, Erik ten Hag was quick to defend his goalkeeper in the immediate aftermath in Seville.

The Manchester United manager said: "He's the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League, that shows he's a very capable goalkeeper."

It may be that several of the players who trudged off in Seville don't fit in United's future plans either.

However, Ten Hag must pick them up and prepare for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton.

The United manager is expected to face the media again later today in his FA Cup news conference.

  16. 'Does De Gea fit Ten Hag's philosophy?'published at 08:54 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (agg 5-2)

One of the hot topics following Manchester United's hapless display in Seville was the performance of goalkeeper David de Gea.

The 32-year-old Spaniard is out of contract in the summer but in discussion over a potential new deal.

De Gea put Maguire under needless pressure for the opener with an ill-advised short pass, while he was fully to blame for the Sevilla third - rushing out from goal to try and half-volley a long ball away, only to totally miskick and allow Youssef En-Nesyri to seal the deal.

Add in Loic Bade's header looping over him and in off the crossbar shortly after half-time, and it was one of the worst nights of his United career.

Since the start of last season, according to Opta, no Premier League player has made more errors leading to an opposition goal in all competitions than de Gea, with five.

"De Gea has been a brilliant servant and a great shot stopper," said Hargreaves. "But he is not good with his feet and Ten Hag wants to play out.

"Does he fit Ten Hag's philosophy? Based on today, no."

  17. 'The Man Utd squad isn't good enough'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (agg 5-2)

"I think tonight has made Ten Hag's mind up on a few of these players," former United midfielder Paul Scholes told BT Sport.

"That is probably the only good thing that will come out of this.

"This shows the squad isn't good enough, if you have injuries. This squad can handle other games but when it comes to the crunch, the big atmosphere, it falls short. The quality drops a level when the big players aren't fit."
