A fairly obvious answer but Istanbul 2005. I was 13 at the time and the only Liverpool fan living in our house. I went to my bedroom at half-time thoroughly depressed but decided that, given the event, I should probably watch it to the end. I don’t think I need to say what happened next.

Has to be that night in Istanbul 2005 - my 9 year old Liverpool fan son stomped upstairs at half time in sheer despair only to race downstairs as the second half unfolded!

Everyone remembers Istanbul in 2005 but Liverpool nearly went out in the group phase of the ECL that season. 1-0 down to Olympiakos and needing 3 goals to qualify, it all seemed over. Cue jubilant scenes as Stevie G crashed home a memorable 3rd goal to send them through.

  7. 'United missed Fernandes massively'published at 11:04 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Manchester United's midfield suffered without Bruno Fernandes in Sevilla, according to former Premier League forward Clinton Morrison.

After receiving a yellow card in the first leg at Old Trafford, Fernandes was suspended and missed Thursday's 3-0 defeat in Spain.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Morrison said: "The midfield was nowhere near it and they did miss Bruno Fernandes.

"He’s the one who puts his foot on the ball and is prepared to play those brave passes. A lot of people give Fernandes criticism because he moans non-stop, but do you know why? It’s because he sets high expectations of his team-mates.

"I didn’t see one player having a go at any of their players and that is the one thing Bruno does do.

"They missed him massively - not only what he does on the ball, but the way he talks and leads by example. Sometimes it can be a bit over the top and a lot of people complain about it, but they missed that against Sevilla."

  8. 'United don't need an overhaul, but they need an evolution' - fan viewpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (5-2 agg)

Erik ten Hag in SevilleImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United's Europa League exit showed Erik ten Hag's side are still capable of poor performances, despite all the progress made this season.

That's the view of United fan Scott Saunders from The Promised Land podcast, who spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily after Thursday's 3-0 defeat by Sevilla.

He said: "I'm quite shocked, to be honest. I've seen it happen a few times this season. They have this kind of performance in them and we’ve seen really poor defeats seven to 10 times this season.

"They just seem to come out of nowhere and, as good as United have been this season and as much progress as they have made, they are still very capable of dropping a performance like that.

"I’m not entirely surprised, but I am speechless, to be honest. Erik ten Hag has some big decisions to make. I think we’ve seen enough of these players, and in the summer they have to be ruthless if they want to turn the page.

"They don't need an overhaul, but they need an evolution. Some of these players just aren’t capable of playing the way Erik ten Hag wants."

  9. Some more damning statspublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (5-2 agg)

    Manchester United

    • Manchester United haven't won any of their five games against Sevilla in major European competition (drawn two, lost three), the most they’ve faced a side without beating them in their European history.
    • For a sixth successive season, United have been eliminated from a European knockout tie by Spanish opposition – three of those coming against Sevilla.
    • This is the first time United have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the Europa League.

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (5-2 agg)

Former Premier League goalkeeper Rob Green said "there wasn’t a flicker of any form of comeback" from Manchester United against Sevilla and added that the goals conceded across the two legs could have been avoided.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, he said: "You go across the board with all five goals conceded across the two legs and they are avoidable.

"The own goal of Harry Maguire was a bit of a freak incident - other than that they are avoidable.

"You cannot play a tie against a team like Sevilla and gift them four goals. They gifted them another one which was disallowed for offside, so it could have been worse.

"By the end of the game it could have been even more. Manchester United needed it to finish with 15 minutes to go, such was the performance.

"There wasn’t a flicker of any form of comeback and you just hope, for their sake, it’s not affected the players. They are stretched and this is what they’ve got right now."

    Did you know?

    • Manchester United made two errors leading directly to an opposition goal for a second time this season (also at Brentford in August), while no Premier League player has made more mistakes leading to a goal being conceded than David de Gea since the start of 2021-22 (five, level with Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris).

  11. Spurs don't deserve Champions League - Sutton's predictionpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton

It has been a strange old season for Spurs and I don't think they will get in the Champions League places from here. They don't deserve to.

I feel like we are approaching the stage of the season where all that Tottenham fans will be hoping for is that Arsenal don't win the Premier League but, for now, Spurs still have a chance of making the top four.

I also think the Magpies will bounce back from their defeat by Aston Villa, and they know they can take a big step towards the Champions League themselves if they win this one.

    Sutton's prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Tottenham

  13. 'I get it's hard to change a winning team' - Targettpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Matt TargettImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle United defender Matt Targett is working his hardest to make his way back into the starting line-up but understands he needs to fight for his place in the side.

The 27-year-old has struggled for minutes in Eddie Howe's side this season thanks to a heel injury and fierce competition from Dan Burn at left-back.

Targett has started just four Premier League games this term, and none since September.

"I understand what's been going on," Targett told BBC Radio Newcastle. "Obviously, the injury didn't help - that was a big setback - and the team have been doing unbelievably.

"You know its hard to change a winning team and, at the moment, we've got the best defensive record in the league"

Newcastle's defence has been solid this season, conceding the least amount of goals (24) in the top flight and Targett is keen to be a part of this defensive success.

"I know that it's hard for me to get back in but I'm being as professional as I can be," he said.

"I work hard, and when I get my opportunity, I want to show to the manager that I'm ready to be back in the team."

  14. Newcastle welcome back ‘intelligent’ Longstaffpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Finally, Howe says Sean Longstaff returns to the squad following illness: “He’s over his illness and has trained well this week. I’ve always maintained he is a huge part of our midfield.

“In and out of possession he’s an intelligent footballer.”

  15. Almiron development down to 'his own hard work'published at 10:18 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on fit again Miguel Almiron: "He’s an option [to start]. He’s trained this week and trained well as Miggy usually does. I was pleased to see him back on the pitch but prior to that he had quite a long absence so we’ll wait and see. I’ll try and make the best decision for him and the team."

On Almiron's development over the past year: "He’s always had the physical capabilities to deliver. Off the ball he’s an incredible performer and certainly helps us with our high intensity pressing game that we want to implement.

"On the ball he has vastly developed his game. He has a unique way of playing and has unique relationships with the team. His game is in a good place and we are delighted to get him back fit. He’s a big player for us."

On Almiron as a goalscorer: "I’d say it’s probably slightly unusual to have the change in his goalscoring form this year compared to previous seasons. The player deserves huge credit because he’s got his head down and worked and he’s developed his game. I see him honing his skills regularly after training to try and be the best finisher he can be in the positions he is going to find himself in. It’s all come from his own hard work."

  16. 'We have to go again'published at 10:13 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

More from Eddie Howe on how he expects Newcastle to respond to their 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa in Sunday's match at Tottenham: "It was an uncharacteristic performance from us. We have been so consistent home and away.

"The only process I know it to analyse, reflect, go to work and then put it right. Training has been very good, the attitude of players has been very good. There has been no fallout from the game and no energy lost. I’m confident we will perform, but we are playing a very good team.

"I’ve seen a good response. Sometimes you can react in different ways. We’ve tried to be quite clear on what we want and I’ve seen a good response in terms of no hangover from the game, no negative reaction.

"The lads have been focused and they are ready for what’s ahead rather than looking backwards. We have to go again now at the crucial end of the season."

  17. 'It’s what we crave as professionals'published at 10:09 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on their hopes of Champions League football next season after Opta gave them an 84% chance of finishing in the top four: "I’ve got no idea. That’s not for me to do, what’s for me to do is to make sure we perform against Tottenham. That’s my way of working and let’s see where we end up.

On the big game occasion at home to Tottenham: "It’s what we crave as professionals. You want the big games and you want it to mean something. We’re determined to express ourselves in the best way possible. We don’t want to play with any fear or restraints and we want to give the best us."

Is it the most important league game of season?: "I wouldn’t have an issue with anyone saying that. We have risen to these types of games this season. Hopefully we can find another gear again."

  18. 'We hope to feel the force of the crowd' - Howepublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League match at home to top-four rival Tottenham: "It’s a huge game for us no denying that at this stage of the season with the games running out.

"We’re playing one of our competitors in the league so it’s a big moment in our season. We’re pleased to be at home and we hope to feel the force of the crowd."

Will the result be significant for Champions League qualification?: "It could be. A lot will depend on this week we have coming up. We have a three-game week and they are huge moments with nine games to play for."

    • Callum Wilson has been involved in eight goals in his past nine league starts for Newcastle, scoring six and assisting two. The Magpies have won 56% of their league games when Wilson has started this season (9/16 - one defeat) compared with 43% when he hasn't started (6/14 - three defeats).
    • 64.9% of Spurs' Premier League goals this season have come in the second half of games (37/57) - a league-high proportion. However, Newcastle have conceded fewer goals after half-time than any other side (13).
