  1. 'Fans prefer Lukaku-Lautaro partnership'published at 19:59 British Summer Time 16 May 2023

Inter Milan v AC Milan (Agg: 2-0 - 20:00 BST)

    Mina Rzouki
European football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

Most of the fans remember what Lukaku did under Antonio Conte, and they just love that Lu-La combination [Lukaku-Lautaro] because of that understanding that they have. They set each other up frequently.

But I think a lot of the fans don't seem to love Correa in that striking partnership. Dzeko we know is almost a playmaker, he took the defence for a walk for Mkhitaryan's goal last week, he has a good finish in him.

But I think the preferred partnership is Lukaku-Lautaro.

  2. 'Leao has the stardust for Milan'published at 19:58 British Summer Time 16 May 2023

Inter Milan v AC Milan (Agg: 2-0 - 20:00 BST)

Ex Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on the returning Rafael Leao on BT Sport: "Leao has that stardust for this team. If he's on the pitch, he gives you all a lift. He has that individual brilliance, he plays for the big moments, and he has the personality to change these games.

"He's happy to go on either foot. Normally players who are quick and fast don't have the brains to make decisions, but he does."

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I remember the [2010] final so well, I remember how good that Inter side were.

The current side are in a great position to try and carry that on, to make [another] final.

It all just comes down to either how calm they are, or whether they decide to go for it from the off, to get that first goal and kill off the tie.

The pressure is on them, they have to do it today. Everyone in this stadium is probably expecting Inter to win, and that's what Inzaghi will have to prepare his team for.

In Champions League history, only one team has won the first leg of the semi-final by two or more goals and then failed to progress.

That's Barcelona who failed to go through against Liverpool in 2018-19, winning the first leg 3-0 but losing the second leg 4-0 at Anfield.

Current AC Milan striker Divock Origi scored two goals in that game, including the fourth and winning goal.

    He's on the bench tonight.

After beating Inter in their first meeting this season in September, AC Milan have lost their last three against their rivals, all without scoring despite attempting 31 shots across these games.

They’ve never gone four in a row without finding the net against Inter in their history.

Inter are third in Serie A, five points ahead of fifth-placed AC Milan, and trying to reach the final for the first time since they were crowned European champions in 2010.

"We know it's one of the most important games in Inter's history," said manager Simone Inzaghi.

"We have an advantage, deservedly so, but we won't just have to manage it. We'll have to play as Inter, knowing that we have a strong team in front of us.

"We're 90 minutes away from a dream, which I and these wonderful guys had.

"It will take a cool head and a warm heart. It's the only way for matches like this."

Inter haven’t trailed at any point in the knockout stages of the Champions League this season (W3 D2), keeping a clean sheet in four of the five games. The only other Italian side to reach the final of the competition having gone unbeaten in the last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals is Juventus, who did so in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

This is the 237th Milan derby - a rivalry going back to 1908 when a group split away from AC Milan to set up Inter.

Inter have won 88, AC Milan 79 and 69 draws.

They have met 178 times in Serie A with the other meetings coming in different versions of the Italian league, cups and the Champions League.

  12. 'They have to do it as a team'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 16 May 2023

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard on AC Milan's chances to BT Sport: "Everyone has to be on the same page, if one player presses everyone else has to, if they play a low, medium, high block, they have to do it as a team"

  13. 'A fast start vital for Milan'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 16 May 2023

Inter Milan v AC Milan (Agg: 2-0 - 20:00 BST)

First and foremost Milan need to make a fast start.

Whether they really press hard or they can cause a couple of turnovers that with Rafa Leao back and Brahim Diaz, they can exploit and use the transitions.

For Inter it is also a difficult game. How do you approach it with the 2-0 lead? Do you try and be comfortable? Do you try and be a bit more passive?

Milan need to try and score first, but at the same time if that first goal goes to Inter, at 3-0 it is curtains.

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli believes his side can reach the Champions League final, despite trailing Inter Milan 2-0 after the semi-final first leg.

Goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Inter victory in Wednesday's first leg.

"We know we are starting with a disadvantage, but we also have the quality to overturn it," said Pioli.

"Now, more than ever, nobody thinks Milan can reach the final."

The last time these sides played a second leg in a Champions League knockout was the 2005 quarter-final.

It was abandoned after flares and other objects rained down on the San Siro turf from a section of Inter fans, one striking and injuring AC Milan goalkeeper Dida.

The tie was later awarded to AC Milan, who were leading 3-0 on aggregate.

Above is the iconic photo of Rui Costa and Marco Materazzi together with a hazy wall of red smoke and simmering flares.

"Everyone was focused on the flares, on the smoke," photographer Stefano Rellandini, who captured that iconic image 18 years ago, told my colleague Alex Bysouth. "But near the centre of the pitch I saw a certain moment.

"Materazzi was nicknamed something like a butcher; he is not really a gentle player. Rui Costa was the opposite - more gentle, more artistic in his football. For several seconds Materazzi put his elbow on the shoulder of Rui Costa.

"So when I saw that, I shot it. I have just one frame in that sequence. That was the moment."

The tie will allow for the iconic shots of a stadium - Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to give it the proper title - known all over the world for its distinctive red girders, that was initially opened in 1926 and most recently modernised for the 1990 World Cup.

On the outside, the structure is awesome. But inside, it is a relic. Neither club sees a future there but getting out is proving problematic.

Because the San Siro is home of both AC Milan and Inter Milan, this two-legged tie sees both legs played at the same venue.

Tonight the majority of the fans are backing Inter - last week the stadium was packed with AC Milan supporters.

Inter could have killed the game, and the tie, last week, and they would have deserved to do so.

They had the chances, they really controlled the game that much - we wouldn't have been surprised if it had been a four or five-nil scoreline.

But at the moment it is only two nil, and in football anything can happen. With a good AC Milan side, you can't really rule them out.

We could see an early goal, a red card, anything, and if those things happen it could make Inter and their fans nervous.

On Saturday, AC Milan's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League were dented by a shock defeat at 18th-placed Spezia in Serie A.

Przemyslaw Wisniewski gave the hosts the lead before Salvatore Esposito's stunning late free-kick sealed victory.

As for Inter, they saw off Sassuolo 4-2 later on Saturday as they moved back above Lazio into third, five points above Milan.

Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring in the first half before Ruan Tressoldi's own goal and Lautaro Martinez's finish handed the hosts control at the San Siro.

Matheus Henrique and Davide Frattesi cut the lead before Lukaku scored his second to seal victory for Inter late on.
