It's a baking afternoon at Prenton Park and at least one Liverpool player turned up at the ground with an iced coffee to stay cool.

Liverpool boss Matt Beard said on the eve of the season that the aim was to stay in the WSL and "be as competitive as we can" after winning promotion from the Championship.

They have certainly been that in front of their own fans and can look forward to another season in the top-tier after several impressive performances, including wins over Chelsea and Manchester City.

    Reading Football Club

Reading manager Kelly Chambers speaking to Sky Sports: "They've [Chelsea] probably gone with their strongest XI today.

"It's about making it as difficult as possible and staying in the game. If we stay in the game, who knows what will happen."

  3. 'I'm so proud'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Liverpool v Man Utd (14:30 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Katie Zelem speaking to BBC Sport: "I think we started it off at the Emirates with a last-minute winner and it's gone from there. It shows that we keep digging deep and hopefully results go our way.

"I'm so proud. I am one of few players that's been here for the whole five years of Manchester United. Especially since Marc [Skinner] has come in, the team has come on leaps and bounds.

"Our aim was always to be in the CL places. Second is brilliant but we want to win every game."

  4. 'We know what we need to do'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Reading v Chelsea (16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "We just routined [in the last few weeks] and I think that's probably something we've established over a long period of time.

"The team know what they need to do and we need to manage the emotions. You want to be in that position [to win the title]. We are happy to be in with a chance of winning the league today."

  5. 'We focus on ourselves'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Liverpool v Man Utd (14:30 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner speaking to BBC Sport: "I am happy that the rollercoaster is at the top of the loop right now. It's been wonderful and it's what happens in sport. We are not worried about what happens between Chelsea and Reading. We can only focus on what we have to do here.

"We've asked them [the players] to finish the job. The season we have had is fantastic so finish the job with a win. We can do what we can do. If miracle happens somewhere then we will celebrate but we can't control that. We are focused on us.

"We need to know [what's happening at Readoing]. But the reality is that Chelsea should win that game, so we will focus on winning our game.

Around 20 minutes until kick-off and Manchester United supporters are pouring into Prenton Park. They have travelled in good numbers and there was a welcoming committee numbering several dozen when boss Marc Skinner stepped off the team coach at 12:55 BST. It's been a hard year for Reading as a club.

Just weeks after the men's team were relegated to League One, the same fate is likely to follow the women's team today.

They would need to produce one of the biggest shocks in WSL history to firstly beat Chelsea, then hope Leicester don't beat Brighton.

As you walk up the road to the stadium and turn the corner, you are met with two mosaics on the outside of the arena.

The men's team is on the right, and the women's on the left.

Manager Kelly Chambers is at the front, as she has been for Reading's eight-year stay in the top tier.

There will be question marks over her future should Reading go down. She has proven herself more than capable of managing in the WSL.

She is also pregnant with her second child (four weeks to go!) so will surely be due some time off when the season ends either way.

It's testament to her and the recruitment that they do. They always seem to do their recruitment really early. They've had a fantastic season. They may have not had the best of seasons performance-wise but they are getting the job done.

  9. Good news, bad news...published at 14:10 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Reading v Chelsea (14:30 BST)

A few stats ahead of this afternoon's match at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. It's good news for Chelsea, bad news for Reading...

    • Reading have only won one of their 13 Women’s Super League matches against Chelsea (D2 L10), a 1-0 home win in this fixture last season.
    • Chelsea have beaten Reading 10 times in the WSL – the only sides to beat the Royals more often in the competition is Man City (11) and Arsenal (12).
    • Excluding the curtailed 2019-20 campaign, Reading have never won their final WSL match of the season (D2 L4), losing 4-0 to Man City last season. They’ve faced Chelsea in their final game twice before, losing 3-2 in 2018-19 and 5-0 in 2020-21.
    • Chelsea lost their final WSL match in each of their first four seasons – in their seven completed seasons since, they’ve won their final game every time, scoring at least twice in every win.
    • Chelsea could win the Women’s Super League for the sixth time, which would be twice as many championships as any other side. The Blues have already won the competition in each of the last three seasons.

For Leicester, the final day of the Women's Super League season is simple - and according to manager Willie Kirk, it's a chance to make history.

The Foxes know that if they win at Brighton, they will stay in the WSL - something which seemed impossible when they were seven points from safety earlier this season.

No team has ever overcome such a points margin to avoid relegation from the WSL, but Kirk's side go into Saturday with their fate in their own hands.

"We want to be history makers," Kirk said. "I expect us to do that."

    Reading v Chelsea (14:30 BST)

Whether or not Reading stay up, Kelly Chambers wants to see her side give their all following a disappointing performance at Tottenham last weekend.

"It is an opportunity which we have to give 100%, which we didn't do against Tottenham. We have to leave everything out there," she said.

"We are where we are and for different reasons, and I suppose honest conversations have happened.

"But we can't come off disappointed that we haven't given our best and I think that is how we felt against Tottenham.

"If we do that and we get beaten by a better team on the day, then we can hold our hands up - but we can't let it be down to ourselves again."

It's been tough for them. All the other clubs are closing those gaps and margins. They've struggled for goals this season but they've leaked too much, That doesn't give you a chance in match where you need results.

  13. 'We have to expect Reading to win' - Kirkpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Brighton v Leicester (14:30 BST)

Leicester travel to Brighton, knowing they have to match Reading's result to survive. But if the Foxes do not win, Reading's superior goal difference means a victory over Chelsea would keep them up instead.

Boss Willie Kirk says they will only be focused on themselves this weekend.

"We want to stay away from matching Reading's result; we want to win the game," he said. "We know if we win, we finish 10th - which is remarkable given where we were five months ago."

He also dismissed the idea of Leicester potentially being able to stay up no matter their result, given Reading's opponents.

"If we think about that, that's where complacency creeps in," he said. "We have to expect Reading to win."

  14. Final act of the Great Escape?published at 14:05 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Brighton v Leicester (14:30 BST)

At Christmas, Leicester seemed doomed. They lost their first nine WSL games and were on zero points at the start of 2023.

They got their first victory on 15 January; a 2-1 win over Reading on 2 April could prove decisive.

Leicester could have secured their survival last Sunday after Reading lost at Tottenham the day before - but despite having 26 shots and 66% possession, they fluffed their lines in a 2-1 loss to West Ham.

"Everybody is feeling the same sense of frustration - we dominated the game," boss Willie Kirk said. "But it looked a bit desperate and nervy, like we needed to score as soon as possible.

"I was surprised at the time, but in hindsight I understand. I think if the games were at the same time we would have won, but it was the first time we let something external control our emotions - we got hung up on Reading's result.

"The players have been on it, wanting to prove a point. We were proving everyone wrong, but last week we were scared to let people down."

While much of the focus is on the top of the table, there is still a relegation scrap to be decided at the bottom.

Reading need to beat Chelsea and hope that Leicester fail to win at Brighton to stay up. It's a big ask but Royals boss Kelly Chambers is not giving it up yet.

"As tough as the challenge ahead is for us, it is a game of football," said Chambers.

"As much as it is a hard position to be in right now, the players have really attacked the week in a positive mindset to try to do everything they can for the weekend.

"I have probably been saying this for a couple of games, but however it has come about, we are still in the fight."

With just one game to go, Rachel Daly has a three-goal lead in the race for the golden boot and the Aston Villa striker also has the chance to break a WSL record.

The England star has 21 league goals to her name this campaign, she needs two more to break Vivianne Miedema's single-season record and just one to match the 22 scored by the Arsenal forward in 2018-19.

Daly's tally is already the most by an Englishwoman in the WSL and she was named WSL player of the season earlier this week.

I've heard she can do a pretty useful job at full-back, too...

"Whatever happens we're going to be in the Champions League next season so we should attract big signings," says Cheryl.

Aaliyah, meanwhile, has put her needlework skills to the test to make dolls of her favourite United players to hand to them after the final whistle as a thank you for their efforts this season.

Arsenal defender Rafaelle Souza will leave the club this summer, manager Jonas Eidevall has confirmed.

The 31-year-old Brazil captain has been with the Women's Super League side since January 2022.

Rafaelle has been key for Arsenal this season, helping them win the League Cup and reach the Women's Champions League semi-finals.

"For reasons that were beyond our control, she will leave," Eidevall said on Friday.

The Gunners' home game against Aston Villa today will be Rafaelle's farewell appearance.

Villa will also be saying goodbye to four of their players.

Emily Gielnik, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Ruesha Littlejohn will depart when their contracts expire, while Natasha Harding will also leave.
