  1. 'Kane will be at Spurs next season'published at 12:27 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Tottenham v Brentford (12:30 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Harry Kane did wave goodbye today, then the Spurs fans would be disappointed but I think he would go with their understanding because of what he has done for the club.

It has been tough this season and he has just been unbelievable - we probably haven't spoken enough about how good he has been because of the achievements and goalscoring form of Erling Haaland.

I suspect that if there is a wave, it won't be a last one. He'll be there next season.

I think because of the love he has for Tottenham, he's been there for tough times, been there for a long time, and I just see him seeing his career out there. I don't know that [for sure], I haven't had any indication, it is just a guess because of who and what he is.

It's been a poor campaign for Spurs, who currently find themselves in seventh place, nine points off the top four having played a game extra than Manchester United.

Managers Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and now Ryan Mason have all tried to turn things around this season to no avail.

It has led to fans calling for changes at the top and there are banners outside the stadium pointing fingers at ENIC Group, who purchased the club in 2001.

The banner on the left has changed the "E" to a £ sign, while the banner on the right has pictures of the club's recent managers who have been sacked, labelling them as "innocent" while club owners are described as "guilty". It's pretty clear what they think.

Obviously, I hope Harry Kane stays but there is part of me that wants to see what happens if he leaves. The media narrative about him leaving has been exhausting for the last 7+ years so there is part of me that just wants to see what happens if he goes. Presumably we'll have a couple of years of "Spurs should've kept him" and then they might eventually move on. Can't see United as a "guaranteed trophy" destination. They've got more chance than Spurs - yes - but it's not guaranteed.

  4. Kane hits 300published at 12:24 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Tottenham v Brentford (12:30 BST)

Harry Kane is today starting his 300th game for Tottenham in the Premier League.

Since his first start in April 2014, no player has scored more goals than Kane in the division (210).

He could set a Premier League record today too, should he score in a 25th different league game this season.

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov believes that Harry Kane could tarnish his legacy at the club if he is to leave in the summer.

Berbatov helped Spurs win their last trophy- the League Cup in 2008 - before moving to Manchester United.

"I can understand and can relate to his situation. I feel for him, but at the same time I think he is going to stay at Spurs," Berbatov said.

"His legacy now is so great that he cannot force himself to tarnish it - when you say Spurs, it is Harry Kane and when you say Harry Kane, it is Spurs.

"They are connected forever because he is the leading goalscorer of the team, of the country [England national team] and probably is going to break Alan Shearer's record for most goals in the Premier League as well."

Godzilla: If Kane does leave, Spurs fans can have no complaints (as long as he doesn't go to Arsenal or Chelsea). He's given them the best years of his career and the board have repeatedly failed to go the extra mile to get in players to take them to the next level.

  7. Mason feels he can 'make impact'published at 12:18 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

Ryan Mason still feels he can "make an impact" in his remaining games in charge of Tottenham and is "really not thinking" about his future.

Spurs have won just one of four matches under Mason since the sacking of interim head coach Cristian Stellini - and he looks unlikely to be appointed permanently.

"I've said that I feel ready to help this club in this moment, and I absolutely do. I trust my team and the people at the club," Mason said.

"Of course those decisions are club decisions but I remain confident in who I am and who my coaching team are as people. I feel I have a good connection with this club and the players and we can make an impact in a short space of time.

"I'm really not thinking about next season. If my attention goes to six or seven weeks' time, I'd be very stupid to take my eye off the ball now."

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been reflecting on a "immensely difficult season" in his programme notes for today's final home match of the campaign, adding that he shares the supporters' concerns and desire for change over the summer:

"This has been an immensely difficult season. We made footballing decisions over recent seasons based on ambition and a desire to bring success to our club and they have not delivered what we had hoped," Levy said.

"Your frustration has been understandable and all of us at the club have shared it.

"We have undertaken a thorough and rigorous review of our footballing operations. Scott Munn joins us in the summer as our new chief football officer and we look forward to sharing further news with you post-season.

"We shall spend the period ahead of next season working relentlessly to position our club for on-pitch success and football you will love to come and watch.

"Every element of the club's operations is geared toward delivering that."

Tottenham are holding the first double header of Premier League and Women's Super League matches at the main stadium today.

After the men's team take on Brentford, the women are up against Reading in a crucial fixture at the bottom of the WSL table.

It's the latest move by the club to show their ambitions to grow the women's team and integrate them into the entire club set-up more.

Today's matchday programme has back to back covers - one showing Lucas Moura, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, and another has defender Amy Turner centre stage.

The WSL match kicks off at 16:15 BST so they are hoping regular men's supporters will stay to support the women.

With West Ham resting players for their Europa Conf final, it's highly likely Leeds and Leicester will both get something from the Hammers remaining Premier League matches, and with Wolves unbeaten at home since 1st April having seen off Chelsea Brentford, Palace and most recently Villa, it looks like Everton need another Brighton miracle today to stay up.

  11. What about Europe?published at 12:09 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

Only a few weeks ago, the Champions League race looked over, but seven Premier League wins in a row have put Liverpool back in contention to keep Newcastle and Manchester United fighting until the end.

The Magpies took a big step towards clinching Champions League qualification with victory over Brighton on Thursday, while Liverpool are just one point behind Manchester United, having played one game more than the Red Devils.

"I don't think it [a Champions League spot] is likely, but if they slip we have to be there," said manager Jurgen Klopp on Monday. "Will they slip? I don't know. Will we win both games? I don't know."

As already mentioned, Spurs are hoping they can pip Brighton to sixth and a Europa League place.

    The relegation fight

For a long time now, the battle to avoid relegation has looked like it's going to the wire.

Relegation has already been confirmed for Southampton with their 2-0 defeat by Fulham, ending an 11-season stay in the Premier League.

Of those still fighting, Everton (32 points) remain one point above Leeds and the bottom three after Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City, while Leicester's 3-0 defeat by Liverpool kept them in serious trouble (30 points) - and they could be relegated by Monday.

With four points separating Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds and Leicester, there is plenty more drama to come.

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysits Nielsen's Gracenote, said: "Leicester City's defeat means that they are now the most likely to go down of the quartet of clubs still battling against relegation.

"Thirty-four points remains the total where it becomes more likely to stay up than go down."

  15. City close in on another league titlepublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

Man City v Chelsea (Sun, 16:00 BST)

Should Arsenal do what they must at Nottingham Forest later today, Manchester City will look to clinch a third successive Premier League title at home to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

They will wrap up the title if Arsenal lose to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, or they beat Chelsea the following day.

And, after reaching the Champions League final this week, Pep Guardiola has compared City's task of securing the title this weekend to serving for a Wimbledon championship.

"Tennis players say to serve to win Wimbledon is the most difficult one," said Guardiola.

"On Sunday the game is in our hands to win the most important competition."

Ivan Toney’s ban should start at the beginning of next season. What’s the point starting it now, with 2.5 months of no football anyway!?

    Gavin

  17. 'I can understand what Toney is going through'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Tottenham v Brentford (12:30 BST)

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who was banned for eight months in 2003 for missing a drugs test, has been speaking on BT Sport about Ivan Toney's ban:

"I can understand what he is going through. I got banned for something different. Ivan has allegedly done something wrong but does the punishment fit?

"I was really emotional, really upset when I was banned. The biggest thing is understanding what is the journey next. I was allowed in the training ground to train, from a mental health perspective, Toney can’t do that for four months. His teammates can’t gather around him and he could have gained solace round that.

"You have to be so mentally strong to accept the punishment and the focus is on the training. The carrot is the game he can come back. When Ivan comes back, that date will be a massive date on the calendar for everyone. I got man of the match for that game but was physically gone."

    In short, a lot.

Here are a few stats that highlight Ivan Toney's importance to Brentford:

    • Toney is enjoying the best season of his career so far, having scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances.
    • His tally represents 37% of Brentford's 54 goals, the third-highest share behind Manchester City's Erling Haaland (39%) and Tottenham's Harry Kane (42%).
    • Toney has been the club's top scorer in all three seasons since joining in 2020, netting 31 goals to help them gain promotion from the Championship in his first season and backing it up with 12 in the Premier League last term.
    • He is a go-to man for Brentford, starting 109 of 120 games since arriving at the club.

BBC Sport at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

All the news surrounding Brentford this week has been dominated by Ivan Toney's ban.

Brentford's top scorer was suspended and fined £50,000 after accepting breaking Football Association betting rules.

He will not be allowed to play again until 17 January, 2024.

But, while it puts a dampener on Brentford's campaign, it does not take away from their brilliant achievements this year.

They are currently inside the league's top 10 and will stay there when the season ends having opened up a 10-point gap over Chelsea.

A win today would take them within a point of Villa, who beat Tottenham last weekend.

Brentford are unbeaten in their last eight London derby matches in the league.

Brentford captain Pontus Jansson, speaking to BT Sport on team-mate Ivan Toney's ban:

"For me, as his captain and team-mate, the most important thing is to remember there is a person behind all of this.

"Of course he was emotional and sad. He took it hard.

"The most important thing is to be there, as a person, and us as a club. I'm sure he will come back stronger but at the moment we have to support him and give him love.

"He is one of the main players in the team. We have a togetherness in the club and everyone will help Ivan."
