Judging by the way England's defenders are warming up, it looks like Alex Greenwood could be playing left-back with Jess Carter in the middle. Unless Sarina Wiegman is trying to trick people!

England aren't the only team in Brisbane and the Republic of Ireland carried out a media day this morning before they jet off to Perth to face Olympic champions Canada.

The Irish narrowly lost 1-0 to Australia in their opener, but Nigeria's draw with Canada means a surprise progression is still on the cards for the debutants.

A win or draw on Wednesday would mean a final game shootout with Nigeria, but defeat would spell the end of their tournament after the group stage.

Midfielder Denise O'Sullivan said Group B is "wide open" and Irish progression "is in our own hands".

"Every single team in this group is very strong, but for us to go out and be able to show what we can do in the game the other night was really refreshing," O'Sullivan added.

"We will definitely look to take that into the next two games."

It was another relaxed morning for the Irish players, which has been a running theme of their tournament so far.

  4. 'We've got unbelievable talent up front'published at 10:07 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    Ellen White
Lionesses' record goal scorer on BBC Radio 5 live

On England's recent goal drought: "It’s only three games, if it was 10 games then I might be worried. We’ve got some unbelievable talent up front haven’t we? And throughout the whole team, I’m not worried, we’ve been creating chances, I think if we can get an early goal, then the confidence will breathe through the whole team. I just want to see some goals!

Millie Bright will lead by example, she was one of our best players for us at the Euros. I think she’ll just be that rock at the back for us, and I’m super pleased that she back fighting fit and she can lead her country out at a tournament, what an unbelievable moment for her.

The favourites with USA, going for the third in a row. Germany were in the final with us, there's a lot of tough competition, but we should be getting out of the group. Hopefully we can build a lot of momentum.

  5. Will the goals flow?published at 10:04 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

The main concern for England going into this game has been their lack of goals. They have failed to score in their last three outings, but will fancy their chances of ending that run against Haiti.

There will be plenty of focus on Haiti goalkeeper Kerly Theus, who stands at 5ft 4in tall.

"There was no goalkeeper in my age group," Theus told BBC Sport. "I didn't want to play in goal but I learned the mechanics - how to hold the ball, knowing when to dive, how to dive, things like that.

"It was completely different to playing on the streets. We trained every day, twice a day, no matter what.

"We had practice matches with the boys' team, it made us stronger and faster."

  7. 'A once or twice in a lifetime honour'published at 09:59 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    Carly Telford
Former Chelsea and England goalkeeper on the 5 Live Football Daily podcast

Going to a World Cup or Euros is the greatest honour of your life.

You can never guarantee when you will get to go to these major tournaments. Being on the pitch is even better but it is such an honour to just be part of it.

If you're lucky, you have the experience with some of your best friends and teammates, and you can make memories that you may never be able to get again.

Of course there is a disappointment if you don't get on the pitch, especially speaking as a former goalkeeper, but even just getting to go, the experience you have and the memories you make will last forever.

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

Given the fact the Lionesses haven't scored in their last three games, the debate has been about [Alessia] Russo and [Rachel] Daly but I actually think England can't be reliant on those two players.

I think if you look at the Euros and the impact the squad had, and the amount of goals that came from different areas, I think that's something that we need to look at.

Haiti are an unknown quantity so we don't know what we're coming up against. It could be a difficult game, I hope it's not. I'm predicting 4-0. I think they'll get some goals today against Haiti.

This Haitian team looks forward - there is no long football legacy, no history to lean on or run from.

In 1991, Haiti finished fourth at the Concacaf Championship. Since then they have won just four matches across five major tournaments. They have never played at an Olympic Games.

On the pitch, the national team has clearly made substantial progress. In 2018, Haiti's women reached their first Under-20 World Cup.

Five years later, the core squad remains and saw off Mexico and Senegal in qualifiers with comfortable, free-flowing wins.

Within the squad, the mindset has changed: Haiti are not just here to make up the numbers.

This is a historic moment for Haiti as they make their Women's World Cup debut.

The 53rd-ranked team secured their place at the tournament by beating Chile 2-1 in an intercontinental playoff in February.

Haiti are massive underdogs, but manager Nicolas Delepine said: "We don’t fear anything. We’ll see [what happens] on the pitch, first we have to play our football, our strengths.”

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on the 5 Live Football Daily Podcast

We are quite fortunate that we aren't coming up against a top, top team in the first match.

Haiti are are still going to pose a threat and we still need to be respectful in terms of putting in a good performance.

They are a side that England haven't faced very much in terms of style of play; they could have some potential threats that the England players might not have seen more recently.

It should be a straightforward game, but it's the World Cup. Literally anything can happen.

This is what they were greeted with when they walked out to take in the surroundings.

It is a little bit different this evening - it's much cooler when the sun goes down at around 5pm local time, and the stadium lights are on.

There's also the small addition of around 40,000 fans, with plenty wearing England colours...

  19. USA begin World Cup with comfortable win over Vietnampublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

The United States launched their bid for an unprecedented third consecutive world crown with a comfortable win against Women's World Cup debutants Vietnam in Auckland.

Sophia Smith struck twice before half-time for the four-time world champions in front of thousands of travelling USA fans in a crowd of 41,107.

Smith, one of 14 players in the squad appearing at their first World Cup, fired the number-one ranked team in the world ahead with a low drilled finish from an angle.

Her second was awarded following a lengthy check by the Video Assistant Referee for an offside before captain Lindsey Horan, after an assist by Smith, swept home the third in the 77th minute.

There was a memorable moment for Vietnam keeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh when she was mobbed by her jubilant team-mates after keeping out Alex Morgan's penalty, which was awarded for a foul on Trinity Rodman.

England, ranked fourth in the world, are one of the tournament favourites but face stiff competition from the United States, who are aiming to become the first nation to win three successive titles.

After playing Haiti, the Lionesses also face Denmark and China in Group D.

"The pressure is always on England," said England boss Sarina Wiegman.

"Everyone expects England to win anyway - that was also the case last year - that's not different now."
