    England 0-0 Haiti

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is great. This is fantastic. I felt like Haiti were not going to sit back and they were going to take the game to England.

If England take them for granted, I think Haiti might cause them some problems.

A bit of early danger for England as Millie Bright gives the ball away. Melchie Dumornay breaks forward but Jess Carter ushers her wide, the Lionesses regain possession but give it away immediately and concede a corner.

    A nervous start by England.

Millie Bright is such a leader, she's really vocal. She's a true professional on and off the pitch, she leads by example.

It's amazing to see her back fit and raring to go today, she's someone that we have needed in that backline.

Some great scenes as the players wait to walk out of the tunnel to dramatic countdown music. We can see England captain Millie Bright on the big screen looking very focused.

Before they head out, a local inhabitant from Australia, representing a history of 65,000 years, gives a speech about respect and competition. He then performs a unique song before wishing both teams well.

Why is England's best goalscorer on the bench? Reminds me of Grealish getting benched for England when he was at Villa - madness

Hard to tell if it is focus or nervousness on the faces of both sets of players as they wait patiently in the tunnel. Probably a mixture of both.

Out they come now to huge cheers from the crowd. What an atmosphere.

  9. Bright to support gender equality and indigenous peoplepublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

Millie Bright will wear armbands supporting inclusion, indigenous people and gender equality in the group stage of the tournament.

Players can choose from eight Fifa-sanctioned armbands, but not the OneLove design that led to Fifa threatening sanctions at the 2022 men's World Cup.

"Everything that we made a decision on, we did as a team. For us, the decision with the armbands took a while and we thought long and hard," said Bright.

"As a collective, we stuck with what Fifa proposed. We will be wearing the different armbands. We thought it was important to shed a light on all the causes that we feel strongly about as a team."

It's been strange to see England struggling to score goals - their drought has lasted three games now - so they really need to put that right here.

They should still get the job done and beat a Haiti team playing at their first World Cup, but it might not be an especially convincing performance. I just hope it gives England some confidence to take forward for their games to come.

    Brown-Finnis' prediction: 2-0

It's such a great atmosphere. There were fans crowding around in bars and pubs and fan zones. It's slowly filling up inside.

There are blues dotted all around the stadium, wearing the England away kit, flags draped over shoulders and scarfs, bucket hats and face paint.

I would love to play in front of a crowd like this, it's amazing.

The blue sky that dominated the day has made way for darkness in Brisbane.

However, that darkness has allowed the city's fantastic colour to shine through - especially around the fan zone.

The 'Brisbane' sign has been a popular attraction all day, and plenty of England fans have been stopping for photos on their way from the fan zone on South Bank to the ground.

I'm excited. I think it's the team that I expected Sarina [Wiegman] to pick.

You're waiting for England to start their campaign, so I just want them to get off the mark, score an early goal, calm the nerves and then just enjoy it.

The fact England have won a major tournament really gives you some confidence.

The injuries are well documented with the players. Certainly, Leah Williamson and Beth Mead, who had outstanding tournaments last summer and obviously Fran Kirby added to that list. But I must say that other countries have also had to deal with injuries and that's part of international football. That's part of tournament football.

But I think the good thing is that there's a real good crop of young talent coming through in England and it really gives them an opportunity to shine. So, you’ve got to move on away from the injuries and work with the squad that you've got. They're a talented bunch.

  20. 'Sarina doesn't seem to know her best 11'published at 10:11 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on the 5 Live Football Daily Podcast

I'm not really sure if Sarina knows what her best 11 is just yet.

In terms of the experience we have in the squad, we still have a tonne of technical ability, but I imagine that there might be some tactical changes that need to be addressed with slightly different personnel than normal.

There's just something about this tournament that I think we are going to face some challenges that this group of players haven't come up against before.
