There have been five red cards so far in Liverpool's nine Premier League fixtures this season, four for the Reds and one for Everton's Ashley Young.

The Merseyside derby has produced 23 Premier League red cards, at least six more than any other fixture.

Only one of the last 10 red cards shown went to a Liverpool player (Sotiris Kyrgiakos at Anfield on 6 February 2010).

Why hasn't Tsimikas been booked? He has given away at least 2 fouls. Young was unlucky to get booked for the first foul, but shouldn't have gone in for that challenge when already booked. Tough job ahead for Everton.

    Rups, London

Bruno G staying on the pitch against West Ham a couple of weeks ago looks even more ridiculous now in the light of Young’s red. Where is the consistency?

I'm not sure the red card means that Everton necessarily need a change of plan.

They have stayed robust, sat back and frustrated Liverpool, tried to hit on the break when they have the chance.

They will of course be disappointed to have lost Ashley Young to the red card and Dyche won't be happy with the amount of chances Liverpool have managed to create, but I think they continue doing what they have done in the next 45 minutes.

Referees being centre of attention once again! its a derby game come on. wanna see a fair game not a lob sided one!.

    Bill Hackney

Rakesh: No surprise Liverpool get a decision at home from the refs after that Tottenham game. So now I expect every miss timed tackle to be a yellow card.

To David @13.13 even as a Liverpool fan I can't agree with you, we should have been given at least two nailed on yellows and got away with them. Ref making up for Spurs me thinks.

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Everton hold on to the break. Ashley Young's sending off has thrown this Merseyside derby up in the air.

Liverpool have dominated but haven't been able to break Everton down. The visitors have had a few chances too.

    Finely poised.

That would have been something. Diogo Jota almost slaloms past three players and into the box before he's eventually stopped. Liverpool fans want a penalty but I don't think they mean it seriously.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin can't bring down a high ball from Jordan Pickford and Alisson is able to gather it in. If he had got that touch right...

At the other end, Dominik Szoboszlai blasts one just over the bar. That was dipping!

In my opinion that was a harsh second yellow for Young, but he should have been off already for kicking the ball away while on a yellow 5 minutes earlier.

    Nathan, Oxford

Ash: All the chat about the second yellow being ‘harsh’. Surely it can be ‘harsh’ but still deserved second yellow?

Paul: Didn’t see first one but that’s a stupid tackle from young when already on a yellow. Do some of these players have brains? Don’t dive in and give them a decision to make. His own fault.

United fan here — that’s never a second yellow. It’s not cynical, it’s not excessive force, he’s not last man… joke of a decision.

    Ayush

Compare those two yellows for Ashley Young with the two red card tackles for Kovacic against Arsenal he got away with. Absolutely no consistency from referees.

    David G

Young can't complain. He could have had four bookings: 3 fouls all worthy of a yellow and kicked the ball away at a throw-in.

Liverpool have stepped it up since the Ashley Young sending off.

James Tarkowski blocks the initial strike from Dominik Szoboszlai then Trent Alexander-Arnold's ball fizzes untouched across the six-yard area.

Anyone at the back post and that was a tap-in.

A player of his experience needs to do better.

Young thinks he has a chance to nick the ball away and dives in. Luis Diaz clearly wants to front him up, knows the defender is on a booking and wants to take him to the by line.

In that situation you need to just accept you've been beaten and just hope someone behind you can help you out. You need to trust you have someone covering in behind.

He can have no complaints about that one.

Backs to the wall job now for Everton.

Oh dear. Another red card in a Merseyside derby!

Ashley Young has picked up a second booking and he's off.

He brings down Luis Diaz on the edge of the box and heads straight down the tunnel, clearly frustrated.
