Former Premier League goalkeeper David James said Everton's position in the Premier League table is "misleading".

James has been impressed by Everton's attacking stats this season, with only Tottenham (153) having more shots than the Toffees' 133.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live before the derby, James said: "It's going to be an intriguing match because given Everton's lowly position in the table, it's quite misleading.

"Liverpool have got a lot of concerns around injuries, Jurgen Klopp has been unhappy about the fixture schedule but I still think Liverpool will be favourites to win of course. I think this is going to be a really tough one.

"This is the kind of game you want to win, especially when everything is against you. I have 100% faith in Everton staying up, I think they will do pretty well this season. It will be a pretty important victory for Liverpool if they are able to do it."

  3. 'Which Liverpool is going to turn up?'published at 12:20 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Liverpool v Everton (12:30 BST)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The year Liverpool won the title there was a feeling that once they scored they would not be scored against. That is how watertight they were defensively back then.

Now they don't have that protection in front of the back four, there are vulnerabilities at the back. They are an unknown quantity.

It is almost like we are wondering each week which Liverpool is going to turn up. That is probably a little bit of a concern for fans and people around the club.

Jurgen Klopp will say that they are in transition, a lot of incomings and outgoings in the midfield this summer. Now with Robertson out, Konate has come in, Tsimikas is going to be in at left back, there are going to be frailties in that back line with the lack of familiarity.

One thing for certain is that they are entertaining to watch.

It's a huge game. We're looking at the impact on the title race here, and Liverpool didn't get that result they wanted at Spurs, so there is more pressure on them today - especially not having Andy Robertson.

Manager Sean Dyche says he "can't control" the off-field uncertainties at Everton amid a possible takeover and the start of a disciplinary hearing.

The club were set to go before an independent commission next Wednesday over an alleged breach of the Premier League's financial fair play rules.

But reports , externalsuggest the hearing has already started this week and BBC Sport understands it will be a number of weeks before the outcome is published.

Dyche said it is an "ongoing process".

Jurgen Klopp and Sean Dyche have had their fair share of run-ins while the Everton boss was at his former club, Burnley.

The Toffees manager clashed with Klopp at half-time in the tunnel in Burnley's win over Liverpool in January 2021.

A few years before that, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez broke his leg in a match against Burnley and Klopp criticised Dyche's side, saying it was more like "watching wrestling".

But there was no beef between the two in the build-up this week.

"Burnley in their best moments were a super difficult team to play and you can see again similar things," said Klopp.

Dyche added: "It's a proper derby. This is the biggest one I know.

"Every manager should be passionate in what they do. I've never properly fallen out with a manager or held a grudge.

"We just both want the best for our teams. No problem with showing passion and commitment to the cause."

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Football Focus

It's a real hot bed for football today. Looking back we've seen some incredible matches between these two sides. Everton's form is looking better, but Liverpool will really be looking for a win, so Man City don't get too far ahead of them in the league. It will be a massive upset if Liverpool don't win.

  8. 'Midfielders will be important for us'published at 12:14 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to TNT Sports on his new-look midfield: "They are obviously three very good players who have shown up in the season. Everyone can see how important they are for us and will be.

"They are not new to each other any more. They like each other, you can see that off the pitch. It's not only about the midfield but it is one of the most important areas on the pitch.

"We have to win - I don't know how many second balls - but also set-pieces and all these kinds of things.

"Everton are in a good moment with a clear structure and will go for it. We will go for it too."

Jurgen Klopp could surpass Rafa Benitez's record of eight Premier League Merseyside derby wins with Liverpool.

Sean Dyche is vying to become the third English manager to win in the Premier League at Anfield with two different clubs.

He could emulate Ron Atkinson with Aston Villa and Coventry City, and Kevin Keegan with Newcastle United and Manchester City.

  11. 'I'm going with the same scoreline'published at 12:10 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Liverpool v Everton (12:30 BST)

Everton's overall record against Liverpool is pretty wretched, with one win home or away since 2010, and I can't see much changing this time.

I don't think the Reds will run away with it, but I've been very impressed by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in their midfield, and they have got so many talented attackers. It just feels like they will be too strong for the Toffees.

Liverpool have beaten Everton by two goals at Anfield in the past two seasons, so I am going to go with that same scoreline. I would have gone with a goal for Everton but my daughter is telling me 2-0 again, so I am going to listen to her.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

Reds midfielder Ryan Gravenberch gets his first league start today and the Dutchman has been asked about how he is settling life on Merseyside.

"I haven't been outside in the city a lot because we have a lot of games," he says in the matchday programme.

"I haven't tried much British food yet but I will have to try - maybe fish and chips or the breakfasts with lots of beans. What do you call it? A fry-up?"

Manchester City midfielder Rodri returns after being banned for their past three domestic matches.

Fit-again defender John Stones played an hour for England against Italy on Tuesday and will hope to start his first league game of the season.

Brighton's James Milner is fit to face his former club after a month out with a muscle issue.

Karou Mitoma is expected to play despite withdrawing from international duty with Japan through illness.

Julio Enciso, Pervis Estupinan, Tariq Lamptey and Jakub Moder remain unavailable, although the latter has resumed training after 18 months on the sidelines because of knee problems.

  16. How both clubs are setpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Liverpool v Everton (12:30 BST)

Liverpool currently sit fourth in the table and have lost only one of their past 45 Premier League home fixtures, winning 34 and drawing 10.

However, the Reds have kept just one clean sheet in their past 10 league matches.

They've conceded the opening goal in 21 of their last 46 league games, including five of their eight matches this season.

Everton have won two of their past three Premier League games, as many victories as they had managed in their previous 16.

The Toffees are seeking back-to-back away league victories for the first time since May 2021.

They sit 16th in the table with two wins and a draw in their first eight Premier League matches this season.

Aaron Hickey is suspended after accumulating five bookings.

Burnley defender Ameen Al-Dakhil could play despite being forced off against Chelsea and subsequently missing international duty with Belgium.

Jordan Beyer remains out but manager Vincent Kompany says some other unnamed players might return from injury.

    Nesta McGregor
    BBC Sport reporter

It's not been a great day so far for our football reporter Nesta due to the weather conditions across some parts of the UK...

Off to see Norwich vs Leeds. Started at Manchester Piccadilly. Train to Sheffield. From Sheffield to Westfield Kirkdale. From Kirkdale to Westfield Westgate. Then a train to Leeds.

Got off at Leeds. Currently on a train to York. Once there, will get a train to Peterborough. And from Peterborough it's a two-hour coach to Norwich.

Left my house at 8am. If I'm lucky, there should be a total of seven trains. One taxi and a coach. As things stand I might make some of the second half...
