A smattering of jeers as the Everton players come out to warm up at Anfield on a glorious October day.

It's the 243rd Merseyside derby but one Blues fans have had little cheer from in recent years.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 28 meetings against their rivals, that coming behind closed doors in February 2021.

But after a sticky start, the Toffees have collected three wins in their last four games so confidence is high coming into one of their biggest games of the campaign.

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to TNT Sports: "I've only had one [derby] but it was a tremendous occasion. It's finding that automatic response for the team performance and that's what we're looking for.

"We felt the performances at the beginning of the season we're getting the results they deserved. We stuck to that task and you have got to keep performing.

"Dominic Calvert-Lewin getting fitter and sharper, Jack Harrison coming in off the back of an injury - we're getting that depth of fitness.

"I think you have to start right and defend well because they have a strong record. You need to make the game about yourselves as well and take it on. It's important we do that today.

"The feeling, the atmosphere, of course is all valid and relevant, but when you go out there it's all about the performance. [Victory] would reaffirm the good work we've been doing. I don't think the points tally is what it deserves."

  5. Early team newspublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Nottingham Forest v Luton Town (15:00 BST)

Gonzalo Montiel is doubtful for Nottingham Forest after suffering a suspected calf injury playing for Argentina, while Serge Aurier's groin problem will be assessed.

Moussa Niakhate returns from a ban but Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, Danilo and Felipe remain unavailable.

Luton's Mads Andersen will be out for several months after injuring his hamstring against Tottenham.

Winger Andros Townsend could make his debut after joining as a free agent.

Defender Gabriel Osho has recovered from a knee issue and is in contention for his first appearance of the season, but this game comes too soon for Amari'i Bell.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was served an "uncomfortable" reminder of his excellent record in the Merseyside derby this week.

He has only lost one of 17 matches against the Toffees since joining the Reds in 2015, winning 10 times.

"It is uncomfortable when you tell me about my record," said Klopp.

"I couldn't be less interested in what happened in the past. We aren't thinking about this.

"We understand the importance of the game, the pressure. I can't remember enjoying the thought of a derby.

"There is a lot of intensity before a ball is kicked. It is a special game, a high-pressure game.

"All the players are used to the kind of game. We shouldn't make it too big for the new players; they are ready for it."

  7. Head-to-head derby statspublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Liverpool v Everton (12:30 BST)

Liverpool's only defeat in the past 28 meetings in all competitions was by 2-0 in the top flight at Anfield in February 2021 (W14, D13).

That victory was Everton's third at Anfield in the Premier League - and first for 22 years - after a 1-0 success in 1999 and a 2-1 win in 1995.

The Toffees have failed to score in 26 of their 62 Premier League games with Liverpool - it's their worst record against any opponent.

The Merseyside derby has produced 22 red cards in the Premier League era, five more than any other fixture.

However, defenders Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon are fit again and Sofyan Amrabat is available despite missing both of Morocco's games.

So no place in the starting XI for Harvey Elliott, as Ryan Gravenberch gets the nod.

Elliott said this week he is fully aware of the challenges he faces becoming a regular at Liverpool with "healthy competition" for places.

The 20-year-old has played 164 minutes in the Premier League this season with competition in Jurgen Klopp's midfield.

"It's healthy competition. Not everyone is guaranteed to play, and when you get your chance you have to make sure you take it. The quality is there, it's about applying it on the pitch," he said.

"I feel I can do a job wherever I'm put. The most important thing is putting that red shirt on and playing. I'm working as hard as I can to get into the team.

"It's down to me to make sure I apply myself and not only show the boss but show the world I'm good enough to play wherever I'm put."

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is to have an operation on the shoulder he injured while playing for Scotland.

He was hurt in a challenge with Spain keeper Unai Simon during their Euro 2024 qualifying defeat.

"That means he's out for a while. I don't know exactly how long," said Jurgen Klopp.

"You only see the real extent of injury when you have a look into it, like properly open [up the shoulder] and fix it - but my experience tells me around three months.

"In my experience you can train pretty quickly again but not football-specific because you have to be careful of challenges and all these kind of things so he will be out for a while."

Arsenal will continue to monitor Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard.

They are both nursing hamstring issues, while William Saliba - who is managing a toe problem - is also an injury concern but Jurrien Timber is the only confirmed absentee.
