    FT: Stoke 1-3 Hull

In case you weren't with us earlier, Hull City won at Stoke for the first time since 2006 to climb to fourth in the Championship table.

Andre Vidigal pulled one back for the Potters but it was only a consolation as they slipped to a fourth league defeat in five games.

  4. 'Smash and grab' for Cardiffpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Sunderland 0-1 Cardiff

    Iwan Roberts
Former Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales

Cardiff have not got what they deseved in their previous three away games but they have come here and it's been backs against the wall.

It was wave after wave of Sunderland attacking, but they missed that clinical bit of the jigsaw that they need.

Cardiff stayed in the game and they got one chance to win it. It was smash and grab and it will be a good journey home.

    FT: Sunderland 0-1 Cardiff

That defeat brings an end to a three-match winning streak and a five-match unbeaten run for the Black Cats.

They scored 11 goals in their three games coming in to this fixture but the goals certainly dried-up this afternoon as they were frustrated by the Bluebirds.

Tony Mowbray's men have a chance to get back to winning ways on Friday night when they head to winless Sheffield Wednesday who are bottom of the table.

    FT: Sunderland 0-1 Cardiff

Cardiff's win means they have picked-up three victories in a row and won four of their last five league games.

A great little run which sees them move up to seventh - level on points with beaten opponents Sunderland.

Cardiff have now won four of their last five away league visits to Sunderland (L1), winning their last three trips to the Stadium of Light.

    Sunderland 0-1 Cardiff

    Cardiff have done it!

Bluebirds players and fans are pinching themselves, they won't believe they have won that!

Sunderland looked for all the world as if they would find the goals to win them the game as they dominated throughout but a combination of poor finishing, great defence and some amazing stops from Jak Alnwick kept them out.

Then with time running out up popped Mark McGuinness to power home a header with Cardiff's first shot on target.

A smash and grab win if ever there was one but Cardiff won't care a jot and it'll be a jubilant journey home.

  10. CLOSE!published at 90+2 mins

    Ryan Wintle almost seals it!

Ollie Tanner carries the ball forward and feeds Wintle but Anthony Patterson makes a vital stop to prevent Cardiff doubling their lead.

    What a turnaround!

That was Cardiff's first effort on target. Sunderland have had 16 efforts.

But if you are not clinical enough in front of goal, that's what can happen.

This is daylight robbery, let's be fair. But Cardiff have stayed in the game.

I looked down at Tony Mowbray and his head is in his hands. He can't believe what has happened.

    Wowwww!!! Would you believe it??!

They've soaked up so much pressure all game and barely had a sniff of the Sunderland goal but Mark McGuinness has just headed Ryan Wintle's corner into the back of the net!

    Their first effort on target!

A huge sucker punch for dominant Sunderland but we made the point earlier - if you don't score while you're on top you always run the risk of conceding and losing the game.

    Sunderland 0-0 Cardiff

Adil Aouchiche's strike is held by Jak Alnwick as Sunderland rack up a 16th shot - six of them on target.

Eight minutes of normal time left for Sunderland to find a winner.

    Can Cardiff hold on?

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Cardiff

Ebou Adams is on for Joe Ralls as Cardiff look to close out a hard-earned point at the Stadium of Light.

Lots of work to do before they get it though!

Sunderland will keep coming as they have all game.

But they've found Cardiff a hard nut to crack so far.

It's a caution for dissent for the Cardiff sub Rubin Colwill as Erol Bulut prepares another change.

And there indeed is a break as Cardiff sub Kion Etete shows some good footwork to create the chance and bear down on goal but it's just nicked off his toes as he goes to shoot.

Heading into the last 15 minutes.

    Sunderland 0-0 Cardiff

If Cardiff get a point then Jak Alnwick in their goal will be a major reason why!

He's just made another great save to deny sub Patrick Roberts.

Dimitrios Goutas then makes another block to prevent Trai Hume grabbing the opener.

It's complete domination from Sunderland but the longer they don't score the more Cardiff will fancy nicking a goal on the break.
