  1. Big player for a big seasonpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

If Brighton needed any further indication of just how far they have come as a club in recent years, then the loan signing of Ansu Fati from Barcelona is it.

The player is one of the brightest young talents in Europe and one Barca would not have allowed to leave but for their well-publicised financial issues.

That he has opted to join the Seagulls is an endorsement of their status as a team playing in Europe and challenging high up in the Premier League, playing style and manager.

Brighton technical director David Weir said: "This season is the biggest in the club's history and we're really happy that a player of Ansu's quality is going to be part of it.

"We will give him the opportunity to embed himself in the squad and to get used to working with Roberto, but naturally we're excited to see him in a Brighton shirt."

It'll be really fascinating to see how he gets on in the English top-flight. The talent is there, but as we've seen before, it can take players - especially young ones - some time to adjust to the requirements of the league.

Forward Mason Burstow has completed a season-long loan move from Chelsea to Sunderland.

BBC Sport football reporter Simon Stone has been speaking on Radio 5 Live about the rumours swirling around about just how much Al Ittihad want to sign Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah:

"Salah, I find it fascinating. We're getting hung up on 11pm. Even for £150 million, Liverpool are not getting a replacement for Salah now.

"What is to stop Al-Ittihad coming back and making another offer? Clearly, Jurgen Klopp won't want to lose one of his best players, but is there a point when the people running the football club will take the money. What will Mo Salah think about it?

"Everybody would like more wouldn't they? If someone is offering you more than what you're on then your head is bound to be turned."

  6. Fati 'a signing De Zerbi deserves'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Scott McCarthy, We Are Brighton, external

When the news first appeared that Brighton wanted to sign Ansu Fati on loan, my initial reaction was "Yeah, and I want to marry Taylor Swift." If anything, a betrothal to Ms Swift seemed more likely than the Albion snaring Barcelona's number 10.

    Yet here we are.

The youngest-ever scorer for Barca and the Spanish national team, the heir to Lionel Messi, a player with a €1 billion release clause, is coming to the Amex for one year.

Needless to say, the Albion will probably not be paying a billion euros to turn the deal permanent at the end of the season. But this still has the feeling of a game-changing signing in terms of the money Brighton are willing to pay for a player.

The rumour mill suggests the Albion are covering up to 80 percent of Fati's wages, with most estimates putting that figure at £160,000 at the very least. That totally smashes the club's existing pay structure.

It is a sign that Brighton are increasingly confident of their place in the top 10 and willing to start throwing around similar money to their contemporaries in that area of the table, rather than being plucky gatecrashers punching above their weight.

Fati is also the sort of signing a manager like Roberto de Zerbi deserves. It is testament to De Zerbi, not only that Barcelona were happy for one of their biggest young stars to come to Sussex to rebuild his career, but that Fati chose Brighton over Spurs following just one conversation with the Albion head coach.

It is a far cry from transfer deadline day 10 years ago, when the big-name signing was Deam Hammond returning on loan from Southampton. No offence, Dean.

1 September 2023 will go down as one of the most surreal days in the history of the Albion. Little old Brighton signing the best players from Barca’s academy on the same day the Europa League draw gives us matches against former European champions Ajax and Marseille, along with a trip to AEK Athens.

Just need Ms Swift to get in touch now. I hear Amsterdam and the South of France are good places to honeymoon on a Thursday night in the autumn months…

Michael Olise's decision to sign a new contract at Crystal Palace is the highlight of the transfer window for manager Roy Hodgson.

The France Under-21s winger was reportedly on his way to Stamford Bridge after the Blues activated a £35m release clause, only to put pen to paper on a new four-year deal at Palace.

"The good thing for us in this transfer window is we kept the team I was hoping to work with again," Hodgson told a pre-match news conference before Sunday's Premier League encounter at home to Wolves.

"At one stage, with Michael Olise, that looked like it might not be possible.

"For me, the best thing about this transfer window is that we still have the team I came here to work with. We are still working and improving and the club is always open to improving."

Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga has agreed a loan deal with German club Augsburg.

The deal for the 24-year-old includes a £5.1m option to buy if Tanganga plays a set number of games and Augsburg stay up.

Hackney-born Tanganga has been with Tottenham since he was 10 years of age.

Meanwhile, in addition to Brennan Johnson, Tottenham are also keen to bring in Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher and Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

However, it is understood players may have to leave before they can seal those addition transfers after agreeing a fee in excess of £45m for Johnson.

The 26-year-old has played 230 games for clubs including Real Madrid, Sevilla, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, and earned six caps for Spain.

He said: “In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.

"Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.”

"So if he was available and it was a deal that was doable for the club I can only say I would be very happy to work with him. There is space in our squad for another player and if it was Rob I'd be very happy with that."

Wolverhampton Wanderers unveil new signing Tommy DoyleImage source, Getty Images

"I think when Gary O'Neil first went in, there was a lot of players leaving. Nunes is a big blow for him because he is a very talented player, someone who can control the ball, control midfield areas and O'Neil said he expected him to still be here and now he's gone.

"When you look at where they are they have had a decent enough start, could have easily got points against Manchester United and then they got that win against Everton. They've brought in Tommy Doyle, who has got great talent and that might just fill the void of Nunes.

"They're not miles away at this moment in time from where they were.

"I think Wolves fans would have been worried until they saw that first performance. I think their own performances have changed the perspective at Wolves because of the players and management and the way they have gone about their job so far. I think they've looked good but the worry is still there for the season."

Palmer scores 'sublime' opening goal in Community Shield

Arguably, the deal that has got people talking most so far is Cole Palmer moving from Manchester City to Chelsea for a cool £40m.

I reckon we're past the point of people asking 'how/why are Chelsea doing this?' now and more into the territory of wondering 'where are they all going to play?'

What is beyond doubt is that Palmer has bags of talent and plenty of promise.

"He is a fit for the project, a young talented player," says Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

"He expects to play more. He's seen the project for him to improve his game and be more involved.

"He needs time to settle, he's moved from Manchester to London, the club is different. We won't put pressure on him to perform, he needs to find his space in the team."

So, if you're thinking 'I might sneak him in my fantasy team', I'd probably hold off for a bit until you see just how quickly he acclimatises to life at the Bridge.

  20. Hi Nunespublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Matheus NunesImage source, Getty Images

Matheus Nunes' move to Manchester City from Wolves has been a few weeks and some downed tools in the making.

However, the Portugal international, who has 11 caps for his country, has signed a five-year contract with City after Wanderers accepted a £53m deal.

"I'm so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I've admired for a long time," said Nunes.

"The opportunity to work under [City manager] Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I simply couldn't turn down.

"I learned so much during my season at Wolves and I'm excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me. I'm really excited to get going, meet the fans and hopefully be a part of plenty more success at City."

If you watched Wolves opening-weekend display at Old Trafford, you'll have seen the qualities Nunes possesses that Pep will admire. As always with City, you suspect he'll be slowly phased into the team over the course of this season. He'll be needed, though, in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne and following the departure of Ilkay Gundogan.
