I'm sorry but how is Maupay getting a move to another Prem team let alone Brentford?! It may just be a loan but I thought Brentford were better run than to panic to that extent...

Former England striker Andy Carroll has joined French second-tier side Amiens after leaving League One side Reading.

The 34-year-old had made two appearances this term but elected to trigger a release clause in his contract to terminate his deal with the Royals.

Carroll, who memorably joined Liverpool from Newcastle for £35m in 2011, will wear the number 99 shirt at his new club.

Last time we sold our star striker on transfer deadline day we ended up with Andy Carroll. It's not about the amount of money, it's about the timing. Salah is not irreplaceable but he is probably irreplaceable with less than 24 hours to go.

Burnley have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign left back Ian Maatsen on loan for the season with an obligation to buy for £31.5m including add ons.

The deal will also include a sell on clause for Chelsea should Burnley sell Maatsen.

The 21-year-old had impressed Mauricio Pochettino during pre-season and the manager had spoken about the positives of Maatsen being able to play in multiple positions.

He started Chelsea’s victory over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabo Cup on Wednesday night.

Maatsen spent last season on loan at Burnley and helped the club win the Championship title and was named in the Championship team of the year.

It is understood Manchester United have reached an agreement to take Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on loan.

Amrabat was missing from Fiorentina's squad for Thursday's Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Rapid Vienna.

The 27-year-old is set to have a medical before the deal is confirmed, which could see United buy him at the end of the season.

  10. Iwobi to Fulham is 'a shock'published at 15:26 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder speaking to BBC Sport

    Alex IwobiImage source, Getty Images

"It's a shock, but you look at Everton's financial position, sometimes you are forced to take the money and see if you can do anything with the rest of the day.

"So someone who's been playing, from a manager's perspective he'll be disappointed, but you've got to understand players are going to leave for free and these things are going to happen.

"I think he's a good addition for Fulham, with Joao Palhinha potentially leaving that is going to be a big disappointment for them. Fulham keep surprising people, last season they did so well and they've started in a similar way this season getting some results.

"Palhinha is their main player, Iwobi is just going to strengthen them in certain areas, but how do they replace Palhinha? I'm not sure you can. I think sometimes when a certain bid comes in you just can't do much about it, they've been linked with other players, but with Palhinha you just don't want him to go."

  12. Everton continue pursuit of Leeds winger Gnontopublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport

Everton are continuing to pursue a deal for Leeds winger Wilfried Gnonto, despite now having three bids rejected from the Championship club.

The Toffees have tried to complete the transfer all summer and had two bids rejected earlier this summer.

Gnonto, 19, submitted a transfer request and the Italy international missed three games after being made to train away for from the first-team, before returning to the side and scoring in Saturday’s 4-3 win at Ipswich.

BBC Sport understands Everton had a £25.7m bid rejected on Thursday, still short of Leeds’ reported £30m valuation.

Leeds continue to maintain the stance, as it has been all summer, that they do not want to sell the player.

With Friday’s 23:00 BST deadline fast approaching, Everton are running out of time to complete a deal which would require a medical and paperwork being finalised.

Everton have certainly been getting players out of the door on this transfer deadline day with Alex Iwobi on his way to Fulham, striker Neal Maupay expected to join Brentford on loan and youngster Tom Cannon closing in on a move to Leicester City.

This will bring in fees close to £30m, leaving cash-strapped Everton with some money for manouevre in the market but little time to spend it.

Once again they have been linked with Leeds United's Willy Gnonto, although reports of a deal have been strenuously denied, but they have been knocking on a firmly closed door at Elland Road for weeks. Will that change in the coming hours?

The time is running out but they must surely be seeking reinforcements after such a poor start to the season.

  15. It's difficult to compete with 'top 16' - Frankpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Brentford v Bournemouth (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Frank led Brentford to ninth place in the Premier League last season but says the club, which are into a third consecutive campaign in the top flight, continue to struggle to compete in the transfer market.

"When you don’t have the biggest budget you can’t compete on the biggest transfer or wages," he said.

"It is impossible to compete with the top eight financially. The next eight, so down to 16, is probably also very difficult for us."

But the Dane believes they can remain competitive due to a "very good culture and good learning environment".

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has not ruled out adding to his squad before tonight's deadline, as he prepares for Saturday's Premier League match at home to Bournemouth.

"There’s still 10 hours," he said earlier in his pre-match news conference. "You never know if we are going to get one more player in.

"We are always out there looking to see if we can get the right player, for the right price, with the right character.

"If one of those three boxes isn’t ticked, then we have a good enough squad."

Kwong: Every player has a price. What we don't know is whether Salah wants to move. But Liverpool are brave to turn down £150m for player who could walk away for free in 2025. As a supporter of Liverpool I am happy he is staying but would totally understand if he is sold.

It is never easy seeing an academy player move on, especially one that has been at the club all of his life.

Cole Palmer’s move to Chelsea stings a little.

It won’t for every City fan of course, but it does for me. I have been watching the highly talented youngster for years as he rose through the academy ranks. It had been a tough route to the first team, but it finally felt like the stars had aligned and his chance was beckoning.

Riyad Mahrez moved on, Juanma Lillo returned to the club as Pep’s assistant, a mentor of his, and he impressed with a wonder goal against Arsenal and a man-of-the-match performance as City won the Uefa Super Cup.

It felt like this was genuinely his time! Only for him to then go and sign for Chelsea. Yep, Chelsea.

I cannot lie - it’s supremely disappointing, but this is life at the top, I guess.

The money is good. £45m for a player who has only played a handful of games is good business, whichever way you paint it. That net-spend trophy is big news in 2023, I hear.

I still cannot shake the feeling that Chelsea have signed a brilliant footballer however. Elegant and slight, he has a wonderful ability to glide past people as gently as the breeze on a sunny day. He has magic in those boots. He will score goals and he will create chances.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea is the right move for him, especially with a resurgent Raheem Sterling on the right. He could easily get lost amongst the 563 senior players they seem to have, but one thing is for sure - he certainly has the talent to beat the odds.

As a City fan, I wish him well.

    More from Mikel Arteta:

On the Champions League draw: "I watched it with my kids and they were betting on it. It was great fun. Some beautiful games to play in and we are looking forward to it."

On Manchester United: "We know the history and these are extremely competitive games. It will be a big battle on Sunday and obviously we want to come away with three points. It is important before the international break to finish well and go into that on a high."

On whether Emile Smith Rowe will still be an Arsenal player: "Yes, absolutely. The role like everybody else is to try to give his best to make the team better."
