  1. Palhinha move to Bayern OFFpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Joao Palhinha's proposed move from Fulham to Bayern Munich has collapsed despite the Portugal midfielder undergoing a medical in Germany.

The 28-year-old was given permission by Fulham to fly to Germany ahead of a possible deal but it was on the strict understanding that a replacement would have to be signed before the deal would be approved.

Fulham were unable to bring anyone in as a direct replacement and the German transfer window closed at 17:00 BST with no transfer signed off, meaning Palhinha will now return to Craven Cottage.

It will be a bitter disappointment to Palhinha, who had set his sights on playing Champions League football, and also to Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who saw him as a key acquisition after signing England captain Harry Kane.

Bayern were prepared to offer what would have been a club record figure for a Fulham sale, with a fee in excess of £65m touted, but The Cottagers stood firm and refused to part with one of their most influential players until they had strengthened that area of Marco Silva's team.

  3. Big boost for the Cottagerspublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

There is no doubt whatsoever that Joao Palhinha staying at Fulham is a massive boost for the club. He was superb in helping them achieve a top-10 finish last season.

And seeing striker Aleksandr Mitrovic depart, losing a key midfielder would be a huge blow as the Cottagers look to manage that tricky second season in the Premier League.

Palhinha staying at Fulham is the best news fans could hope for. I'm sure he would be disappointed, but he doesn't seem like the kind of player to down tools (unlike a certain Serbian striker). It also gives us 6 months to convince him to stay or find a replacement.

  5. What next?!published at 17:34 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Right, where we looking for the next big deal?

Liverpool? Ryan Gravenberch is still in the pipeline and the Mohamed Salah smoke continues to float skywards, albeit not quite as heavily as earlier.

Forest also look to still be in the mix for business, on a number of fronts.

That could include forward Brennan Johnson moving to Tottenham.

Plenty still to happen before 11pm. And as we all know, we'll still be here clearing up the deal sheets afterwards too.

Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Jonny Evans has joined the club, signing a one-year contract until June 2024.

The United Academy graduate has been capped 102 times for Northern Ireland.

In his previous spell at the club, the defender won three Premier League titles, two league cups and the Champions League during 198 first team appearances.

Jonny Evans said: “I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years-old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.

“I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club.”

John Murtough, Manchester United Football Director, said: “Jonny is a winner who has experienced everything in the game. These characteristics are invaluable to the culture that we’re building here.

“His attitude and work ethic are second to none and Erik and the coaching staff know he’s someone they can rely on whenever needed this season. We all welcome Jonny back and hope he can add further achievements to the success he has already enjoyed with the club.”

  7. Palhinha deal collapse will not impact Gravenberch movepublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

With fears that the Joao Palhinha deal from Fulham to Bayern Munich has collapsed, Liverpool fans might be worried that it could mean fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch's move to the Reds from the German club could be in danger.

However, from my understanding it will not have an impact and Netherlands international Gravenberch is still set to joins the Reds for £34.3m (40m euros).

Forest's eighth signing of the summer, Nicolas Dominguez, had this to say to the club's official website after joining the club...

"It feels amazing to join a club with so much history in England and the Premier League.

"I watched the game Forest played against Sheffield United, I saw the fans in the stadium and it attracted me.

"I'm over the moon and keen to embrace this challenge."

Forest's Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson said: "Nicolas showed a real desire to join Nottingham Forest, amongst the many options that he had.

"He joins having amassed some excellent experience in Argentina and Italy and we are pleased to see him join today."

Be interesting to see how the dust settles if that Palhinha deal falls apart.

Fulham will no doubt be delighted to keep a player of his calibre but there'll be some pieces to pick up.

You'd imagine (and with all due respect to Fulham) the player will be disappointed at seeing a move to a club the size of Bayern crumble.

Let us know your thoughts, Cottagers fans.

Joao Palhinha's proposed move from Fulham to Bayern Munich is in the balance after the German transfer window closed at 17:00 BST.

Palhinha, the 28-year-old Portugal international, was in Munich on Friday to undergo a medical after being given permission to travel to Germany by Fulham.

This was, however on the strict understanding that the transfer, believed to be worth around £65m, could be agreed between the clubs and with time running out no deal had yet been struck.

The window closed without confirmation from either side that a deal had been done, with German sources reporting the move was off - although Bayern and Fulham have yet to comment on the current situation.

Wolves have an agreement in principle with Strasbourg to sign midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde for £12.8m.

The former France Under-21 international would come to Molineux ahead of Fulham’s Harrison Reed, who was linked with Wolves over the past 24 hours.

Wolves officials have flown to France to try and complete the transfer ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Ange would be very unwise to get rid of Pierre-Emile Holberg ..... even though he may not now make the first 11 he is a brilliant holding midfielder for Spurs ... the 'surplus' rest should definitely move on

    Merv

Even if Brennan Johnson signs, he's not a striker, which means that yet again Spurs go into the season with only one registered striker on the books. If Richarlison gets injured this weekend we can't do anything until January and the season will be screwed. Still at least Levy has managed to sell more than he has spent once again.

What ever happened to the Kane money. We desperately need another Striker and CB but doubt it will happen. Same old Spurs

  19. Palmer move 'stings a little'published at 16:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Manchester City fan view banner

    Steven McInerney,Esteemed Kompany,external, external

It is never easy seeing an academy player move on, especially one that has been at the club all of his life.

Cole Palmer’s move to Chelsea stings a little.

It won't for every City fan of course, but it does for me. I have been watching the highly talented youngster for years as he rose through the academy ranks. It had been a tough route to the first team, but it finally felt like the stars had aligned and his chance was beckoning.

Riyad Mahrez moved on, Juanma Lillo returned to the club as Pep’s assistant, a mentor of his, and he impressed with a wondergoal against Arsenal and a man-of-the-match performance as City won the Uefa Super Cup.

It felt like this was genuinely his time! Only for him to then go and sign for Chelsea. Yep, Chelsea.

I cannot lie - it’s supremely disappointing, but this is life at the top, I guess.

The money is good - £45m for a player who has only played a handful of games is good business, whichever way you paint it. That net-spend trophy is big news in 2023, I hear.

I still cannot shake the feeling that Chelsea have signed a brilliant footballer however. Elegant and slight, he has a wonderful ability to glide past people as gently as the breeze on a sunny day. He has magic in those boots. He will score goals and he will create chances.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea is the right move for him, especially with a resurgent Raheem Sterling on the right. He could easily get lost among the 563 senior players they seem to have, but one thing is for sure - he certainly has the talent to beat the odds.

As a City fan, I wish him well.

  20. 'He's come for Roberto De Zerbi'published at 16:46 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Brighton supporter Monica Fletcher speaking on Radio 5 Live about the loan signing of Ansu Fati: "He's amazing. This is Brighton and we've got a player coming over from Barcelona. He joined them at the age of 10. Got a few injuries, but he played in the World Cup. He's not had regular games although he played 30 last season.

"I'm sure he's come for Roberto De Zerbi. He will take him under his wing. There is this little bit about injuries. If the poor guy doesn't make it then we haven't laid out a lot of money for him. I'm looking forward to watching him and watching him in Europe."

On Europa League draw: "I'm excited. It's a hard group, but we will certainly be competitive. This is Brighton & Hove Albion and this is what we've got to keep reminding ourselves. We've increased the squad, which is one of the important things."
