  1. Lukaku wanted to leave - Pochettinopublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino says he is "not disappointed" about the departure of Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan to Roma.

"The club was clear in the situation and what I hear through the club is that the player wanted to leave. I believe that, the circumstance was clear.

"It was clear that he was not going to be here this season."

Pochettino added "he does not know" if Callum Hudson-Odoi will play for Chelsea again, amid his potential move to Nottingham Forest.

  2. Gallagher 'is an important player' for Chelseapublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Chelsea

After being asked about incoming players, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was asked about possible outgoings, and in particular, the future of England midfielder Conor Gallagher:

“The players that are involved in the squad are in our plan but then it is down to the club.

"Conor is a consistent player who can perform in different positions. We are so happy with him.

“We can only express our feelings from the day we started to work. Conor was showing great commitment to the club. We are happy with him and he was captain two days ago against Wimbledon.

"He is an important player for us but what is going to happen in the future, I don't know. I can’t tell you this. It’s like if a player asks, ‘how do you see me in the future’, ‘I don’t know, it is up to you'.

"If you are the best you will play, Even if you pay big money for a player they have to perform if they don’t then I think they don’t deserve to play. That is football.

"All the players know they will play if they deserve to play. If we pay big money for some player it is not guaranteed they are going to play. We are so happy with him and I hope he is going to stay.”

Ansu Fati has broken a series of records at Barcelona - but will spend the coming season at Brighton.

The 20-year-old made 36 La Liga appearances last season for Barca, as they secured their first league title for four years.

Fati became the club’s second-youngest appearance maker in August 2019 when he came on as a substitute in a 5-2 win over Real Betis, before becoming Barca's youngest goal scorer in a 2-2 draw against Osasuna six days later.

In September 2019, he became Barcelona’s youngest Champions League player and his goal against Inter Milan in December that year made him the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history.

Last season he won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup as well as the Uefa Nations League with Spain. He also made two appearances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Fati has represented his country at senior level nine times, scoring two goals.

  8. 'Salah remains committed to Liverpool'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    BBC Sport

The bid for 31-year-old Mohamed Salah was for in excess of £100m, with add-ons taking it up to £150m.

Liverpool insist the Egypt international is not for sale, and that is final as far as they are concerned.

Salah, who joined the Reds from Italian side Roma in 2017, signed a new three-year contract last summer.

The player's agent has previously dismissed talk of a move to Saudi Arabia but has not responded following the latest links with Al-Ittihad.

"Mohamed remains committed to Liverpool," agent Ramy Abbas Issa wrote in a social media post on 7 August.

"If we considered leaving Liverpool this year, we wouldn't have renewed the contract last summer."

  10. Your hopes for deadline daypublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Fulham

    Your viewsImage source, .

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Mark: Keep Palhinha. Keep Palhinha. Keep Palhinha. And repeat until window closes.

Tim: Not losing Palhinha to Bayern would be a huge deadline day win. Securing a Mitrovic-quality replacement this window is not realistic, so bank the money for now. Focus on getting the most out of Raul, Vinicius, Willian and co - who could be squeezed for the 25-plus goals by a coach of Silva's calibre - then address the issue in January if needs be.

Harvey: Fulham need to fend off any interest in Joao Palhinha and sign a left-back to compete with Robinson, sign a centre-back if Tosin leaves, sign a central or attacking midfielder to back up Tom Cairney and Andreas. And, of course, we need a top striker to replace the goals with lost with Mitrovic leaving. Big day for the club!

Tim: To hold on to Palhinha at all costs is essential if we want to have any ambitions of avoiding a relegation scrap this year. A striker capable of scoring 15 goals is also still needed.

It's not looking as if these Fulham fans will have their wishes granted...

Erik ten Hag is due to speak to the media shortly.

The Manchester United manager may be able to update on the attempt to sign Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.

He will definitely be able to update on the fitness of Rasmus Hojlund, who Ten Hag said last week he hoped would make his debut this weekend.

The United boss may be less forthcoming on the talks with Sofyan Amrabat and Fiorentina, which are, eventually, expected to be successful.

Why on earth aren’t Chelsea signing a new forward? Nkunku will get 10 tops and Jackson is no born goalscorer. If we had a poacher like Kane we would win the league easily.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking in his pre-match news conference before Saturday’s visit of Nottingham Forest about the signing of Cole Palmer from Manchester City: "He is fit for the project, a young talented player and he decided to come as he maybe expected to play a bit more. That is not the most important thing, we see a project for him to improve his game and be more involved in every single game. The quality is there. He has great potential.

"We are not going to put pressure on him to perform, the most important thing for any player is to be calm and happy."

When asked if this is Chelsea's last signing, he added: "I think so. If something is going on, I don't know. I last spoke to the sporting directors two hours ago. We are happy with the squad."

  17. Palhinha to travel to Germany as Bayern seek dealpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Fulham's Joao Palhinha has been given permission to travel to Germany as Bayern Munich try to thrash out a deadline day deal for the Portugal midfielder.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel is keen to add the 28-year-old international to his squad after signing England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.

Fulham were reluctant to lose the influential Palhinha but the player is keen to play Champions League football.

He is now awaiting confirmation of a deal between the two clubs before undergoing a medical and completing the formalities of a deal.

The fee is expected to be around £65m but talks are ongoing, with Fulham also seeking a replacement.

Palhinha will be the second high-profile departure from Craven Cottage in recent weeks after striker Aleksandar Mitrovic joined Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

Espanyol sign Marc Jurado from Man Utd

    Manchester United

    One from earlier...

Manchester United have confirmed that Marc Jurado has completed a permanent move to Espanyol.

The 19-year-old defender was highly rated when he joined the club from Barcelona three years ago but has been unable to make a breakthrough into the club's first team.

Alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Dan Gore and Alejandro Garnacho, he was part of the side that helped United to their 11th success in the FA Youth Cup in 2021-22.
