  1. Brighton get Ajax and Marseille in Europa League drawpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

The 2023-24 Europa League group stage draw has been completed - and it's a tough draw for Brighton on their European debut.

They are in with Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens. Like Newcastle's Champions League draw yesterday, that's a proper group packed with European history.

Europa Conference League holders West Ham will face Olympiakos, Rangers are in with Real Betis while Liverpool will play LASK.

    Full groups featuring British clubs:

Group A: West Ham, Olympiakos, Freiburg, TSC Backa Topola

Group B: Ajax, Marseille, Brighton, AEK Athens

Group C: Rangers, Real Betis, Sparta Prague, Aris Limassol

Group E: Liverpool, LASK, Union SG, Toulouse

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Blake: We should sign Johan Bakayoko. The times I have seen him play for PSV he has been outstanding!

Chris: We need a strong presence in central midfield to cover for Josh Dasilva and a striker to take over when the inevitable Ivan Toney departure happens. No doubt we'll never have heard of any signings that do arrive but that's worked before. Trust the process.

Tom: Another striker, another midfielder, another winger and a back-up for Rico Henry. Also, don't spend £50m on Brennan Johnson.

Bambee: I still think we need an out-and-out striker brought in. By what Toney has said, and his new agent as well, you have that gut feeling that he will be pushing to leave either now or in January. Injuries could also cause a problem if they happen.

Zayn: Ideally we get Johan Bakayoko and Azzedine Ounahi over the line, this gives us depth even during Afcon. I think we need to give up on Brennan Johnson now as he isn’t worth £50m.

Julien Laurens speaking on Euro Leagues: "Ansu Fati looked amazing, he looked like the next big thing. It shows how attractive Brighton are and De Zerbi's football is.

"Now we will see what Ansu Fati can do in England. The bad injuries really stopped his progression in the last two years.

"Will he ever get back to that level? No one knows really. Maybe it was the right thing for him to leave."

James Horncastle added: "I think De Zerbi is a future Barcelona manager. Brighton is probably the best run club in the world. They've made £250m off Chelsea alone in the last year.

"De Zerbi will have spoken to Ansu Fati, he's a very persuasive guy. He will have had a very clear idea and will have explained that to Fati."

  4. Fati to Brighton?published at 12:27 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

One deal we are expecting to see completed today is Ansu Fati making a remarkable loan move from Barcelona to Brighton.

Fati became Barcelona's second youngest debutant when he came on against Real Betis aged 16 years and 298 days on 25 August 2019. Four days later, he became the club's youngest ever scorer by finding the net against Osasuna.

The Spain international has suffered injury issues, but made 51 appearances last season, scoring ten goals and assisting four more.

He was frequently used as a substitute by manager Xavi, leading to him being linked with a loan move away in a bid to secure more regular starts.

It looks like quite the scoop for Brighton - here's what our experts on the Euro Leagues podcast have had to say...

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Phil: Ideally, I'd like to see an experienced central defender and striker as we appear to be a bit light in those areas. Can't see more than one or two signings as we've had a busy summer.

Keith: Luton need to sign a top-level striker for about £15-20m to help keep us up! Very late now, but is it possible?

Jim: I think Isaac Hayden could work really well in the squad as he has more Premier League experience then Mpanzu.

    Paddy: Allan Campbell contract extension.

Luton Town are targeting one position on transfer deadline day after signing Manchester United defender Teden Mengi last night - a central defensive midfielder.

Manager Rob Edwards said on Thursday: “There is only one area now maybe potentially in that midfield area to sort of cover and help with Marv [Nakamba]. He’s the only natural pivot that we’ve got.”

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Henry: We already have a good squad, so I wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't make any more transfers. However it would be an amazing coup if we could bring in Hugo Etikite on loan from PSG. I hope the club doesn't sell Pablo Fornals, cult hero player at West Ham.

Ian: We look as if we are going to get at least one striker in. What I would really like is both left and right wingbacks young and fast where we could play three at the back more effectively. Can also Lingard coming in to help with the home grown rule?

Chris: Striker, striker, striker. We can pick up goals from all over the park but Antonio, while he brings a lot more than goals to the team, has never been prolific and Ings hasnt set the team alight. With Scamacca gone we need competition up front and a regular goalscorer.

Mark: If we can sign Yuri Alberto before the deadline I believe we have a very competitive side that can challenge for Europa league and a top six finish.

Elias: Dream deadline is we get Ekitike and/or Alberto and agree a deal for Kostic. All three quality players and add a bit of depth to the squad.

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has attracted interest ahead of the transfer window closing but as yet, there is no deal in place for the England international.

Greenwood, along with Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly will leave Old Trafford today if the right deal can be done.

Whilst Van de Beek and Bailly are not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans, United have decided it is better for Greenwood to resume his career elsewhere amid the fall-out from serious charges against him being dismissed.

Should no deal be done today, Greenwood would only be able to sign for a club in a league whose deadline is in September – including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Greece and Switzerland – unless his contract was cancelled ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Here's a fine transfer for European football fans - Italy star Leonardo Bonucci has joined Champions League debutants Union Berlin.

The 36-year-old central defender has joined the Bundesliga side, who will face Napoli and Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage.

Bonucci made more than 500 appearances for Juventus, winning nine Serie A titles as well as being key to Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.

“It is something special for me to take the step abroad for the first time in my career," Bonucci, who has spent his entire club career until now in Serie A, said.

"At Union I have the opportunity to continue playing at the highest level and to use my experience to support the team on their way in three demanding competitions.

“I’m really looking forward to this new stage in my career."

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Peter: Wouldn’t say no to a cheeky little Emile Smith Rowe.

Edward: Full-backs. Quite simply, just full-backs. Having just three established ones available in Lamptey, Veltman and Estupinan, one of whom is massively injury prone and another is not very quick. In a season where we're competing on four fronts, that is not a good idea, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves. Gross and Milner can fill in if needed.

Joe: We need an attacking midfielder to replace Mac Allister, plus a decent big centre-back to partner Dunk.

Chris: Two good young strikers are needed now we are playing more games in the Europa League.

Zach: We need a midfielder who can defend and attack.

  18. A quiet day expected at Watfordpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Geoff Doyle
BBC Three Counties Radio sports editor

I have just spoken to Watford head coach Valerien Ismael. There won’t be much transfer business, if any, today. There has been a change of policy at Vicarage Road.

The squad has been reduced dramatically over the summer and that is what the club now want. Ismael has been heavily involved in this process working with the board to create a tighter group.

He said: “It’s our choice, to give the players and squad that feeling that everyone will get a chance and is involved. If we are not satisfied we will go back in (the transfer market) in January”.

  19. Leeds stubborn over Gnontopublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Leeds United are determined there will be no deadline day departure for teenage Italy winger Wilfried Gnonto despite continued links with Everton.

Everton have a long standing interest in Gnonto and were believed to be pondering a late move as they prepare to sell Alex Iwobi to Fulham.

Leeds have maintained a firm stance on any approaches for Gnonto and the player is now back in the fold after disciplinary action.

Action was taken against him following a refusal to play at Birmingham City, but he has returned to the first team and scored in their 4-3 win against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

  20. How Premier League football is uniting Lutonpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Luton v West Ham (20:00 BST)

They've been through relegation heartache, financial meltdown and penalty shootout drama, but Luton Town have finally made it to the Premier League.

Their cosy and compact Kenilworth Road home - famous for its much-memed away-end entrance - is in the densely populated Bury Park area of the town.

It's about to host some of the biggest names and teams in world football, starting with their first home game of the season against West Ham United later.

But English football's top tier is a world away from a place labelled the worst to live in England in 2023, external and which has been plagued by claims of extremism and racial division.

So what does Luton's promotion to the Premier League mean for those living in the Bedfordshire town's diverse community?
