We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Stuart: Only one. Cole Palmer stays. Wonderfully talented, deserves his chance in our first team, academy, local lad. I want to see him develop and blossom at City.

H: I would like City to look at an understudy for Rodri, sell Phillips as Pep doesn't trust him to step into Rodri's role and sign a defensive midfielder.

Sam: Cole Palmer staying would be ideal because he is a real one to watch in the future and could be the next big thing for England. He was also our best player in the Super Cup and the Community Shield.

James: Would like us to sign a full-back. Kyle Walker has been a great servant for us but we need to look to the future.

    Peter OdemwingieImage source, Getty Images

Plans change, as former West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie found out back on transfer deadline day 2013, when he turned up at QPR’s training ground to work out the final details of his transfer to the London club despite not having permission from West Brom.

But QPR’s transfer plans had changed while Odemwingie was en-route – leaving him sat outside the training ground in his car while the world’s media looked on. The transfer fell through and Odemwingie was eventually disciplined by his club.

Although plans do change, you can help minimise the impact of those changes by planning ahead when you are trying to meet deadlines.

  4. Outgoing to serve incomings at Everton?published at 09:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport

Everton signed a much-needed striker during the week with the arrival of Portuguese frontman Beto from Udinese and he scored on his debut in the Carabao Cup second round win at Doncaster on Wednesday.

Sean Dyche has bolstered his attack with teenage striker Youssef Chermiti, forward Arnaut Danjuma and winger Jack Harrison, as well as bringing in experienced full-back Ashley Young.

In terms of further arrivals on deadline day, it may depend on outgoings before there are any incomings.

Alex Iwobi is into the final year of his contract and has reportedly refused to sign a new deal - the Nigeria international has been heavily linked with a move to Fulham so we wait to see if that one gets completed.

Striker Tom Cannon, who spent last season on loan at Preston, looks like he will be heading back to the Championship permanently with a number of clubs interested in the front man.

It remains to be seen what happens with the likes of Demarai Gray, Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin too.

There are suggestions the Toffees will look to make a loan move for West Ham winger Maxwel Cornet, who played for Dyche at Burnley, but there is nothing concrete on that at the moment.

One to keep an eye on.

The scramble is on for Wolves to bring in new faces with the £53m Matheus Nunes money - when that deal eventually goes through.

Southampton striker Che Adams and Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed are both on the club's radar.

There are other options too but it could be a busy deadline day at the club's Compton training ground.

  6. 'A huge honour to join Manchester United'published at 09:03 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Manchester United

Some more on Manchester United's signing of Turkey goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

The 25-year-old international has made 166 career appearances, keeping 53 clean sheets. Last season he was a key player for Fenerbahce as they won the Turkish Cup and finished second in the Super Lig.

Bayındır said: “It is a huge honour to join Manchester United and become the first Turkish player to represent this incredible club. I have a passion for success, and I will give everything to help this special group of players to achieve our ambitions.

“I cannot wait to start working with such an experienced goalkeeping unit. We will support each other and drive high standards every day so that each of us is ready to perform whenever called upon.”

John Murtough, Manchester United Football Director, said: “Altay is an excellent addition to our squad and adds further quality to our already strong group of experienced goalkeepers.

“Having consistently performed at a high level in a strong European league, he has the qualities to support us in achieving our ambitions across all competitions this season and beyond.”

Southampton sign Taylor Harwood Bellis from Manchester City on loan

    Southampton

England Under-21 skipper Taylor Harwood Bellis has completed his loan move to Southampton from Manchester City.

Harwood-Bellis attracted the attention of a number of clubs following his performance in this summer’s European Championship campaign.

Southampton have secured the youngster’s services, with an obligation to buy if they make an immediate return to the Premier League.

If that happened, the overall deal would be worth around £20m.

    Alex Howell
    Football reporter

West Bromwich Albion striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has been the subject of interest this window.

It’s understood that Stoke City have had a bid rejected for the forward. More clubs from the Championship and also a couple from the Premier League are believed to be interested Thomas-Asante so he could be one to watch.

    Manchester United

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Charlie: United keep on getting overrun in the midfield so another midfielder would be key. However, with Varane being injured, a new centre-back should be the priority.

Nahid: United are a mess. We need Sofyan Amrabat and reinforcements in defence, and probably a striker too, otherwise we can kiss top four goodbye!

Tom: Get the Amrabat deal over the line to play alongside Casemiro. We also need short-term cover for left-back, so a Cucurella loan makes sense. Also, with Varane's injury issues, we should look at bringing in Todibo - though this seems unrealistic. Getting Cucurella and Amrabat in should be the priority and then further issues can be resolved in future windows.

Nick: The dream closing hours of the transfer window would be selling Mount for £60m - he doesn't fit the system. Sell Maguire, keep Donny van de Beek, buy a defensive midfielder, buy a centre-back and another striker.

Seth: Amrabat would be a game-changing signing for the Reds. In all three of United's games this season, you could tell that they were lacking a strong central defensive midfielder. They definitely need reinforcements in defence - at the top of that list would be a left-back to replace the injured Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.

  12. Fati deal moving closerpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Brighton are expected to complete the loan signing of Ansu Fati from Barcelona before tonight’s deadline.

The player flew to the UK yesterday and it is understood a deal is now in place for the 20-year-old to join Brighton, with only some minor details to iron out.

It is expected Brighton will pay most of the player’s wages during his time at the Amex Stadium.

  13. Incomings and outgoings at Burnley?published at 08:43 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport

Burnley have been one of the busiest Premier League teams this summer, taking their total number of signings to 14 last night following the free transfer arrival of France Under-21 international Han-Noah Massengo.

I'm told there may well be further business done today by the Clarets, with a left-back and forward player high on their list of priorities.

Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen has been linked with a move back to Turf Moor, having spent last season on loan at the club and helping them win the Championship with over 100 points.

But the Dutch 21-year-old has been involved in the Blues' first-team under new manager Mauricio Pochettino so it remains to be seen whether the Argentine sanctions a move.

Another to keep an eye on is Belgium international Mike Tresor from Genk. The 24-year-old was the Jupiler Pro League player of the year last season, scoring eight goals and providing an incredible 21 assists in 34 games.

Talks are believed to have taken place and the deal seemed to be stalling earlier in the week, but reports from Belgium late last night suggested it could have been revived and is now back on.

In terms of outgoings, some of the fringe players may be moved on but it depends on the terms offered and whether the players themselves want to go or not.

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Callum: Seal a loan deal for Lenglet and sign a young attacking prospect - someone like Adam Hlozek.

Craigy: Just three players to complete the jigsaw. Right full-back cover for Cash is a must; an experienced second goalkeeper; and a striker. Relying on Watkins during a full European campaign would be too much.

JD: A return for Tammy Abraham would be welcome!

Ayaan: I think a deal for Wilfred Gnonto would round up a spectacular summer of business. He was very promising for Leeds and we have been linked with him earlier in the windows. He would give Emery some more depth and different attacking option.

  15. Conference League draw at 13:30 BSTpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

All that means there will be two British sides in the draw for the Europa Conference League draw at 13:30 BST - Aston Villa in pot two and Aberdeen in pot four.

Just like the Europa League draw, it is one team from each pot in a group and no two teams from the same nation in the same group.

Pot one: Eintracht Frankfurt, Dinamo Zagreb, Club Bruges, AZ Alkmaar, KAA Gent, Fenerbahce, LOSC Lille, Ferencvaros

Pot two: PAOK, SK Slovan Bratislava, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Victoria Plzen, Aston Villa, Ludogorets Razgrad, Fiorentina, Bodo/Glimt.

Pot three: Genk, Zorya Luhansk, Astana, Besiktas, HJK Helsinki, Legia Warsaw, Spartak Trnava, Olimpija Ljubljana.

Pot four: HSK Zrinjski, KI Klaksvik, Aberdeen, FK Cukaricki, FC Lugano, Breidablik, FC Nordsjaelland, Ballkani.

  16. Hearts' European hopes endedpublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

PAOK Salonika 4-0 Hearts (6-1 on aggregate)

Head coach Frankie McAvoy said Hearts "cannot dwell" on their early European exit as they were hammered by a rampant PAOK in a one-sided Europa Conference League play-off second leg in Greece.

Any Hearts hopes of progressing to the Conference League group stage for a second successive season were extinguished early on after two quick goals from Taison and Brandon Thomas extended the Greeks' aggregate lead.

Giannis Konstantelias walked in a third before Taison strolled in for his second to emphasise the gulf between the two sides.

"The goals we conceded were pretty poor," McAvoy conceded. "It's difficult for me to stand here try and defend that because we didn't do well enough.

"It's a sore night for us. We need to put it to bed. It's gone now. That's down to failings from last season, not finishing third. We can't dwell on it.

"We've fallen short. We've got to concentrate on ourselves. We need to make Tynecastle a hard place for anyone to come, and try and pick up our form away from home - which hasn't been good enough, if I'm honest."

Hearts rarely troubled the PAOK goal throughout the night and must now watch on as Aberdeen, Celtic and Rangers are left to fly the Scottish flag in Europe.

  17. Watch how Hacken defeated Aberdeenpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Aberdeen 1-3 BK Hacken (3-5 on aggregate)

And here you can watch the best of the action from Pittodrie last night, including one of the worst misses you could ever wish to see (at about the 3:15 mark).

  18. Aberdeen drop into Conference Leaguepublished at 08:35 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Aberdeen 1-3 BK Hacken (3-5 on aggregate)

Aberdeen will have to settle for the Europa Conference League group stage this season after a defeat by Swedish champions BK Hacken in the Europa League play-offs.

The tie was perfectly poised after the Scottish Premiership side's commendable comeback from 2-0 down in Gothenburg last week.

But Ibrahim Sadiq, who confirmed post-match that he is moving to AZ Alkmaar, scored twice before the break to silence a boisterous Pittodrie.

Bojan Miovski's cool penalty, after Luis 'Duk' Lopes was tripped, sparked hope within the stands that the heroics of seven days ago could be emulated.

And they should have been, but the North Macedonia international squandered a glorious opportunity to take the tie to extra time, when he scooped an effort agonisingly wide.

The disappointment was then compounded when Amor Layouni buried a spot-kick - awarded after a VAR review - to ensure the Swedes claimed a spot in European football's second-tier competition.

Aberdeen, whose aspirations of a first Europa League group campaign in 16 years are over, will instead learn their Conference League opponents on Friday (13:30 BST).

  19. Villa ease into Europa Conference League group phasepublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Aston Villa 3-0 Hibernian (8-0 on aggregate)

    Aston VillaImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa cruised past Hibernian at Villa Park last night to book their place in the Europa Conference League group stage.

Sealing their spot was little more than a formality for Villa, who led 5-0 on aggregate after thrashing Hibs in the first leg. Jhon Duran set the tone for an easy night for the hosts with a 12th-minute opener.

Leon Bailey and Matty Cash extended the advantage for Unai Emery's men as Hibs crumbled under Villa's pressure.

Hibs, still searching for a manager after last weekend's sacking of Lee Johnson, rarely found a path through the hosts' back line.

Villa found themselves in near-total control of the ball and brushed past the visitors' defence with ease. Bailey tucked home a powerful finish from close range before the break while Cash turned home when David Marshall failed to clear a Bailey free-kick in the second half.

  20. Europa League draw at 12:00 BSTpublished at 08:27 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

These are the teams for the Europa League draw, which will take place at 12:00 BST.

Each of the eight groups will have one team from each pot, but no two nations from the same country can be in the same group.

West Ham, Liverpool and Rangers are in pot one, with Brighton in pot three.

Pot one: West Ham, Liverpool, Roma, Ajax, Villarreal, Bayer Leverkusen, Atalanta, Rangers.

Pot two: Sporting Lisbon, Slavia Prague, Stade Rennes, Olympiakos, Real Betis, LASK, Marseille, Qarabag.

Pot three: Molde, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheriff Tiraspol, Union Saint-Gilloise, Freiburg, Sparta Prague, Maccabi Haifa, Sturm Graz.

Pot four: Toulouse, AEK Athens, FK TSC, Servette, Panathinaikos, Rakow Czestochowa, Aris Limassol, BK Hacken.
