There were reports emerging saying Everton were in advanced talks to sign winger Maxwel Cornet from West Ham.

With less than an hour remaining in the transfer window, I'm told that one will not be happening.

One report went as far as to say he was having a medical with the Toffees.

That would be some going, considering he was on the bench for West Ham in tonight's Premier League victory at Luton.

Happy with Liverpool's new midfield. With Elliott and Jones potentially having breakout seasons it could be a good year. We're all screaming about our defenders however Joe Gomez was a forgotten man but at 26 he can still be like a new signing - don't forget he was an England international a few years ago

    RJ, Liverpool fan

Poch is spot on about tough transfer window for Chelsea. Having to unload so many players with some on huge wages then be canny bringing in ones for the future Reduced wage bill by approx £75m a year.

    Satisfied Chelsea fan

Swap McTominay for Palhinha? Fulham would be mad to accept that! If that happens I'll eat my hat...

    On Liverpool's new midfield signings

It looks strong and Klopp needed to do it, he acted well.

He has good players who are all very different. They are all playing in their own shirt number and doing it well.

That is the bit Liverpool needed to get right and they have done.

John: Brennan Johnson is a great signing. Bags of energy and talent. This is a new spurs and he fits the bill perfectly. Spurs are replacing Kane by committee and that is the best way.

Richard: You get the feeling not many first choice signings turned up at Man U this window, if any, while other teams nailed theirs. Second season syndrome for ETH? Europa league incoming?

Bucks: Liverpool should agree to a contract now to sell Salah in January for £200M total. It will give Liverpool time to assess options, the player gets the option to go and the Saudi League team get their man.

On Nottingham Forest signing too many players

If you bring that amount of players in, you are going to have so many players sitting on the bench or in the stand that somehow you have got to man manage.

Nobody has got an idea except from pros who have played the game how much we moan when we are not in the side.

How he [Steve Cooper] manages a matchday when 25 players or more are preparing on a Friday for a game on a Saturday and you have got to pick 11 [players] and substitutions then tell another 10 [players] don't even bother travelling you are not even in the squad.

Those 10 [players] who are doing nothing on a weekend will be fuming, especially if you have come overseas.

If you’d asked me a month ago if I’d be happy that we’ve swapped Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Endo for Keita, Ox, Fabinho and Hendo. I’d have been slightly overjoyed. CB & RB will have to wait until January then I suppose.

    Anon

What’s interesting about the Gravenberch transfer is it shows the importance of a longer contract and a bigger selling club. He played just 3 games last season and, just a year later, has been sold for almost double the price Bayern paid for him. Liverpool should have moved a year ago.

A good midfield overhaul for LFC in the end. More to do next Summer but a great start. Champions League places this season, serious challenge next. Just need to keep Salah now.

When you spend $$$ on Rice, Havertz, Timber and Raya, I'm not sure where the extra pocket money would come from?

    Ben, Chester

Daniel: Very concerned about lack of cover at LB and no proven goalscorer upfront. All it takes is injuries to the defensive backline to kill our title challenge when it matters most. Agree the only signing that's improved us is Rice.

Barcelona said they "wish to thank the player publicly for the financial effort made and his desire to wear the Barca shirt" which implies he's taken a paycut.

An excited statetement added: "Xavi Hernández is well aware that Joao Cancelo is much more than your average right-back. Like Alejandro Balde on the left, the Portuguese defender is as happy getting forward as he is defending.

"With experience, he has also developed the ability to play at left-back and even in midfield, something he did on more than one occasion at Manchester City. Barca have signed a right- back and a whole lot more."

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left on free transfers and Jordan Henderson and Fabinho went to Saudi Arabia.

All the big clubs in the Premier League are strengthening but Mr Arteta thinks he has enough depth in his squad.

    Worried Arsenal fan

Are we going to talk about the lack of Arsenal activity? Edu and Arteta are clearly tucked up in bed already. Think another defensive piece is a must after Timber's injury

    Tom

Might be unpopular but I think the transfer window for Arsenal has been disappointing. With timber out for a long time we have only really signed one player that improves us in Declan Rice. We needed another striker and and a backup for Saka with Champs League this season we will be down to bare bones come December

  20. 'The best managers can convince a player'published at 21:37 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder speaking to BBC Sport

I think it is a well-known fact that until a position is agreed with a football club there isn't supposed to be any contact with the player, but to say that doesn't happen would be telling a lie because it happens all the time.

The manager tells you how attractive a club is, why they want to sign you, where they want to play you and some of the top managers are best at that. They tell you how they can further your career, where they see you playing and the best ones can actually convince you to sign.

What's difficult though is where there is a director of football totally involved and the manager has no say on choosing the players. On some occasions that can be difficult and you can see it these days where a player doesn't know if they wanted to sign them or if the manager doesn't play them and says they weren't my signing.
